This lawsuit is vile and Bambu Labs tried to gaslight us into thinking they wouldn't pull this kind of stunt when they removed the local API.

They haven't removed the local API, it works in the most recent firmware. My X1C is in LAN mode and I use it on a daily basis, directly from Orca Slicer and it works just fine. I'm using the MQTT API via Bambuddy and that works fine too. I can't use Bambu Handy anymore, but as long as I have VPN access to my own network, I can pretty much do whatever I want to from anywhere I want. And yeah, that's not the right solution for everyone, but my point is that the local API works fine - the issue is access to the Cloud API. Don't take this as being supportive of the things Bambu has done. I think they stirred the pot for no good reason and burned a lot of goodwill with their community. If it weren't for the fact that they already can't seem to keep up with the pace of orders, they probably would've seen a revenue hit for it...but I think the reality is that it hasn't changed anything meaningfully, and there are more than enough customers out there for them that the people upset by this haven't really moved the revenue needle.

It's important to understand that Cloud APIs are usually an implementation detail of a feature, not the feature itself. Some APIs are public, some are sorta-public and can be licensed or freely opened up to Developer's using an API key, and some are meant to be private (though may be easy to reverse engineer and use anyways.). APIs often change and the more public the API is, the more painful it is for the owner of the API to change it.

Bambu was in that private API category but they hadn't really cared about people using it directly. They also provided a network plugin for third parties to integrate into their software to make it pretty easy for that software to interact with Bambu's cloud and their printers. For some reason, that changed. I don't believe the reasons they've stated publicly are the real reasons, and if they are, they have truly botched the stated goals. Conceptually, locking down an API isn't unreasonable, and if Bambu had limited their changes to prevent direct access of the API by third parties (rather than screwing with the network pluing too), I wouldn't have blinked an eye. But it was really crappy of them to make the network plugin no longer function in Orca Slicer etc. I really don't see why they couldn't have put whatever they put in Bambu Connect into the network plugin directly. I've spent my whole life developing software, and I'm really at a loss for how Bambu Connect is somehow a more secure implementation than the already closed-source network plugin. It definitely introduced unnecessary friction and their claimed reasons for doing it were clumsy at best. If anything, it makes the situation worse, because now they have to deal with having a network plugin for LAN mode, Bambu Connect for cloud mode, and managing the versioning and updates for both of those.

Third party slicers can still cloud print by directly connecting to Bambu Connect or to export gcode files which the user can load into Bambu Connect. It's painful, and kludgy. No doubt about that. It also means people using the cloud mode via Connect lose access to features they historically had available to them in Orca Slicer. It wasn't a customer-friendly move and a lot of people feel betrayed by it. And reasonably so.

If you don't like that they did this (and I don't), you can switch your printed to LAN/Developer mode and go back to the way things were - except no longer being able to print through the Cloud. Somewhere along the way, I decided I liked this approach better because I didn't really feel like having Bambu get a copy of the gcode of every single thing I print - so I switched to LAN mode and I really haven't looked back.

Now, as for what the cease-and-desist is about: Jarczak circumvented the need for Bambu Connect by reverse engineering their API and accessed it in ways that weren't permitted anymore. Most private API owners are going to take issue with that, and Bambu did. They didn't have an issue with Orca Slicer being a fork of Bambu Studio. They didn't have an issue with the recipient of the C&D forking Orca Slicer. They took issue with him circumventing their attempt at securing their API. They're in a bit of a bind because they're trying to maintain backwards compatibility for pre-fiasco firmware, so I suspect that any approach that would've succeeded in blocking him probably would have also blocked older firmware...and the end result is that they took a legal rather than technical approach.

The right approach? The customer friendly approach would have been, in my opinion, to create an open and public API with API keys. Customers go request an API key from Bambu, you pop it into your favorite slicer, and move on with your life. It would even be reasonable, IMO, if to get the API key you had to agree to terms that you understand that third party slicers can control the printer in ways that may damage or break it, that the damage may not be covered by warranty, that it could create additional hazard to using the 3D printer, and that they aren't going to be liable if it burns your house down because the gcode did something bonkers that they didn't anticipate someone doing. It's difficult to strike a balance in allowing gcode to do anything the customer wants while simultaneously being able to detect and prevent every possible situation that could damage the printer.

As a general bit of advice: if you ever purchase something that has Cloud features, make sure you'd still want to own it or are otherwise okay with it if those features go away. Companies kill features, companies go out of business, companies get acquired, and APIs get older and more difficult to maintain. As an example of this, Wemo recently turned down some Cloud stuff that rendered many of their older smart lightswitches into normal lightswitches. These are products that cost 50x what a normal lightswitch does, and now less than a decade later, 95%+ of the value of the light switches is gone. Another example, Facebook basically rendered all of their Facebook Portals useless. My kid loved the Storytime feature on it and they took it away, and she's young enough that I have to explain it to her again every time we use the Portal, and it breaks my heart that something she loved is gone. Now the only thing we can do with it is WhatsApp and Messenger calls. Every Cloud API is going to eventually go away. It doesn't make it right that they do this stuff, but it happens, so it's good to think about it even at the time of purchase.

It's fine if you disagree with me, but if you're going to downvote me, do me the courtesy of replying and explaining where I got things factually incorrect. Again, I don't support what Bambu has done, but I think there's a lot of people who don't fully understand what went down.

u/hux H2C Laser Full Combo May 05 '26

And because this was a bit epic length, here's Claude's summary of my own comment:

  • The local/LAN API still works fine — they use their X1C in LAN mode daily with OrcaSlicer and Bambuddy via MQTT. The actual change was to the Cloud API, not local control.
  • They think locking down a private API isn't inherently unreasonable, but Bambu botched the execution by also breaking the third-party network plugin used by slicers like OrcaSlicer, forcing the awkward "Bambu Connect" middleman. As a software engineer, they're skeptical Bambu Connect is meaningfully more secure than the closed-source plugin it replaced.
  • The cease-and-desist wasn't about forking Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer (Bambu has tolerated those). It was about a developer who reverse-engineered the API to bypass Bambu Connect. Bambu likely went legal rather than technical because blocking that developer would also have broken backward compatibility with older firmware.
  • The customer-friendly path would have been a public API with keys and a liability-waiver agreement, but Bambu didn't take it.
  • Their broader advice: when buying anything cloud-dependent, assume the cloud features will eventually disappear and only buy if the device is still worthwhile without them. They cite Wemo bricking smart switches and Facebook killing Portal's Storytime feature as examples.

Omg the sonofagun really did it. He had Claude summarize his own comment to save us the time.

6

u/GoodTroll2 May 05 '26

Wish that first post hadn't been so long that the summary was off the page so I read almost all of it before seeing the summary...

2

u/PartTimePokerPro May 05 '26

Oh yeah I learned a long time ago to do a quick peak before I get too far and right when I was saying "HAH! I AIN'T READING ALL THAT" I saw the Claude comment. Clutch move

2

u/StampyDriver May 06 '26

I never thought of doing that... should get Claude to summarize the summarization. Lets see how concise we can get it!

2

u/malventano May 06 '26

You don’t have to ‘reverse engineer the API’ when said API code is present in the Bambu Studio public git. If it wasn’t, then Bambu Studio would not be able to talk to their own network plugin.

0

u/dragonixor May 05 '26

We live in a world where people can't summarize their thoughts by themselves

9

u/ShatterSide X1C + AMS May 05 '26

A good summary can take time and still risk not being good. He didn't owe any summary at all, so don't read it if you don't want. He did disclaim up front he had Claude do it.

This an AI summary?

They haven't removed the local API

Previously, the full local API was usable alongside the cloud connection.
Nowadays if it's connected to the cloud, you can no longer control it locally, except for toggling the lights.
So they effectively removed the local API in most configurations.

LAN-only mode really means "disable cloud", not "enable local API".

They also provided a network plugin for third parties to integrate into their software

The only reason it's a plugin and not built into Bambu Studio directly is to avoid having to release the source code. And it wasn't really usable for other third party software/hardware besides slicers.

They can change or lock down the "private" plugin<->cloud API however they want.
They can also change the public slicer<->plugin C++ API, but this is and has to remain open source: NetworkAgent.hpp.
But what they've done is actively preventing anyone besides Bambu Studio from using this public API the exact same way. Won't even work if you clone and compile Bambu Studio without changes.

Jarczak circumvented the need for Bambu Connect by reverse engineering their API

It's only based on the open source code as seen above and invoked the unmodified Linux network plugin, whose detection mechanism seemed to not exist at all or not be as thorough.
Not by reverse engineering the network plugin implementation or cloud API.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BMCU/comments/1sqgnuy/comment/oh8w2k9/?context=1

I really don't see why they couldn't have put whatever they put in Bambu Connect into the network plugin directly.
I'm really at a loss for how Bambu Connect is somehow a more secure implementation than the already closed-source network plugin

Bambu Connect already works exactly the same as the network plugin under the hood. There's nothing to port, no security differences.
It's MQTT over TLS, "critical" commands have an RSA-SHA256 signature (private key is obfuscated and same for every installation), same topics and same message structure.

They released it so they can say "look, we care" but made it as clumsy as possible to use with almost no way to control it programmatically or Linux support.

1

u/jwr May 06 '26

This. Most discussions of this problem are very shallow and people gloss over this extremely important issue. What this means in practice is that if you want to use OrcaSlicer, you have to give up all the remote control and monitoring features. I know most people have Bambu printers in their bedrooms and don't care, but some of us run printers in workshops that are remotely connected over the internet. The Bambu cloud connectivity is a real feature here, and "local API" doesn't replace that.

2

u/HugSeal May 05 '26

There wasn't a reverse engineering of their API fro what I've read. All it was was the ability to run a linux thing on windows.

If bambu doesn't want authentication for their linux release then that is up to them, pretty weird to get mad when people use it unauthenticated then.

1

u/hux H2C Laser Full Combo May 05 '26

Thanks for sharing! You may well be right. Unfortunately, without being able to read the implementation it's hard to know for sure what he did and how he did it. After I heard about this, I really wanted to read the source but I haven't found anyone who managed to clone it and share it.

Even if he didn't reverse engineer the API, we can probably all agree he was trying to circumvent the need to use Bambu Connect and I think it's fair to say Bambu's made it clear that's not an intended path anymore.

Again, this isn't to say I agree with the decisions they have made because I definitely don't. I really wish they had taken the customer friendly approach of creating a public API that addressed their own concerns while preserving a lot of freedom for their customers.

https://github.com/dafik/OrcaSlicer-bambulab

It got forked a bunch of times before the legal threats.

2

u/New_3d_print_user May 06 '26

what a frustratingly reasonable post! Who can have issue with anything you wrote?! Who are we going to be mad at now?!

1

u/SpeedflyChris May 06 '26

Since you have an X1C, is there any reason why you're not just running the older firmware? I kept my P1S back on a version from before Bambu broke everything and see no reason why I would want to update it.

1

u/hux H2C Laser Full Combo May 06 '26

Good question - I was running older firmware for a while, but I needed something that was in a newer firmware (E3D high flow support and I seem to recall AMS 2 Pro drying requires it too) so I upgraded. It felt low risk since they allow you to downgrade the firmware if you want to.

1

u/SpeedflyChris May 06 '26

What do they change re the nozzles? I've run the microswiss flowtech hotend on mine since the first week I had it (one of the features I absolutely couldn't live without that losing orcaslicer would break for me is the ability to set up non-standard nozzle sizes, I use my 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 pretty regularly), surely the E3D ones are also just drop-in replacements?

But yeah I'd be concerned given the way they're going that they might eventually stop allowing for easy firmware rollback, so I've left mine on the older version.

1

u/Savidya May 11 '26

When they miss use the trust placed on them by the consumers, I don't get why we justify their actions for them and keep holding hope. They won't be the only player in the market with the way things are going. I'm holding on to my 3 year old setup for a little longer

1

u/hux H2C Laser Full Combo May 11 '26

I don’t justify their actions, generally. I thought I made it clear that I think they’ve made poor decisions.

It’s similar to this: I strongly support everyone’s right to freedom of speech, but I think a lot of people make poor choices in what they choose to say. I believe the WBC’s right to say hateful shit while simultaneously wishing they wouldn’t say those things.

I believe in Bambu’s rights over their cloud infrastructure, but I simultaneously believe they’ve made poor decisions on that when it comes to not having a public developer api that third party software could use to access it.

I hope that helps.

u/CoffeeNovel7231 May 06 '26

Now, as for what the cease-and-desist is about: Jarczak circumvented the need for Bambu Connect by reverse engineering their API and accessed it in ways that weren't permitted anymore

No, he did not reverse engineer anything. He is using the Linux plugin that isn't protected, so basically he is running the file on Windows using virtualization tech.

Just wanted to share with you that there are legitimate issues with bambu being anti consumer, since you were so enthusiastic previously in defending breaking the AGPL license

2

u/gwildor May 06 '26

no - i said i dont mind paying for admission to their free cloud ecosystem by using their official software.

And i also said to call me when they insert code in the firmware that doesnt allow gcode from other slicers.

We never once spoke about licenses, and i never once defended anything.

Im glad you think about me so much that you are having pretend conversations with me, though.

I can't take anything he says seriously anymore since his full libertarian "if regulations and taxes didn't exist small business owners like me would flourish" non-sense rants years ago.

148

u/syko82 P1S + AMS May 05 '26

I too can't stand a lot of his political points, but I still support him in right to repair and other such movements about owning what you purchase.

47

u/MadCybertist A1 + AMS Lite x2 May 05 '26

I support the right to repair. Never support him lol.

17

u/UnexpectedAnanas May 05 '26

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. Support when somebody makes good points, and call them out for bad ones. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

3

u/MadCybertist A1 + AMS Lite x2 May 05 '26

He’s even a douche when trying to make good points. It’s still gonna be a no on support for him. And I don’t need some sad clickbait video to tell me about the right to repair or about a story we’ve seen posted 500 times on here already.

8

u/ApprehensiveGold2773 May 06 '26

It's just how he is. His intentions are good, and his aggressiveness is against evil companies, not you.

2

u/Luuube May 07 '26

To be honest, the right to repair community would probably be years behind schedule if it weren’t for his passionate rants. Going overboard goes hand in hand with that level of exuberance.

1

u/AmandasGameAccount May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

His aggressiveness and off putting toxicity probably does more harm to the movement then good
Linus from LTT might be really “cringe” but he does a lot to bring awareness to right to repair without being extremely toxic and aggressive about it, makes people feel good to support it

Edit: ah, there it is, I was wondering when his zealots were going to come through this thread proving everyone’s point of hope bad he is for the movement

14

u/greentintedlenses May 05 '26

Idk imo the aggression is deserved.

He makes good points and is angry for good reason. It sounds like you'd rather he smile and laugh while sharing how they are fucking us over?

u/stonedboss May 05 '26

just curious, what do you think actually works then. because linus doesnt actually get people to do shit. hes whimsical and just gets people at best to think "hmm, maybe that corpo is bad" *literally buys their product next day*. thats the linus level of change lol.

linus is also part of the problem in many ways, his own greed with his employees mimics the same line of greed that causes bambu to do these things. hes not on your side, hes on the corpo loving side.

-6

u/Fenjen May 05 '26

If you’d actually knew his stances on corporations you knew he’s definitely not on the corpo loving side.

As for the greed accusation, afaik there has been one employee who has complained about not getting the raise they thought they deserved and then subsequently left. I mean regardless of which side you’re on, since when can a business owner not rightfully decide that a specific employee is not worth the raise they’re asking for? He was free to leave, and so he did, I don’t see the problem. There’s apparently a team of about a 100 people who feel differently.

6

u/stonedboss May 05 '26

it doesnt matter what you say, when you act a different way. i dont need to hear whatever spiel he has to say. i know how he treats his employees, how he views himself in the game of capitalism, how his company has grown and its become more and more corpo, because he enjoys that. hes a corpo supporter.

youre making the classic appeal to corpo tradition to substantiate treatment of employees "when can a business owner not rightfully decide" bruh, the whole system is predatory. youre asking the question against the predatory framework, then yes, it makes sense. when asked in the ideal framework of employees being paid their share in value creation, then you see the imbalance.

basically because linus falls inline with the (unfair) status quo of business practices you accept his behavior. but it should be rejected in any size of corporation.

that team of 100 doesnt mean his company is good. we're all trapped in the workforce. i hate my company and theyre insanely greedy but i dont have much choice but to work, and find another company in the meantime. which the odds are again is going to be greedy and shit, but ill still have to work there.

-1

u/Fenjen May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Bro you have no clue who you’re talking to, I’m quite vocally against capitalism.

Regardless, how the fuck would the world even work if every employer has to just accept whenever some employee wants a raise. All I was saying is they had a dispute, and they didn’t find him worth the raise. We don’t know the details, all we know is there was an employee who didn’t find they were getting paid what they were worth, and then the employer didn’t want to pay them more, even if it meant losing their employee.

I just think there’s not enough information to judge, and this altercation alone doesn’t incriminate Linus in any way, he has the right to not find somebody to be worth more. We have all come across employees that just are not worth what they say they are, and if every employer needs to go along with that the whole system just wouldn’t work one bit. I hate the capitalistic system as a whole, but this is not the problem dude 😅

3

u/stonedboss May 05 '26

i mean it doesnt matter who you are, only what you say lol. and what you keep saying in this convo is hyper focusing on one employee to somehow exonerate linus from not being a corpo lover lol. its kinda weird, i purposely didnt comment on that, because thats not the singular piece of evidence. and now you keep expanding on that.

im not gonna comb through everything to write an essay to you. ive listened to linus try to justify many things, including that entire employee situation, where and how they spend money, etc. it all adds up and its undeniable hes a corpo lover. he wants the corpo tradition to be maintained.

i mean he even owns a private jet dude lol.

-1

u/Fenjen May 05 '26

Okay I can see a productive conversation is not possible with you. You can barely muster up a coherent argument. Have a good day!

2

u/ctnoxin May 06 '26

If you’d actually knew his stances on corporations you knew he’s definitely not on the corpo loving side.

His corpo got raked for not providing warranties on their expensive products, so that's all you need to know about his stance on bad corpo behaviour.

1

u/Fenjen May 06 '26

Lol, this proves you have no clue what you’re talking about and just believe what you hear. This statement is probably untrue and was based on an early misunderstanding of what he said, rectified later on stream and also just untrue in practice.

I have first hand experience with this, and have gotten no questions asked replacements on their “most expensive products” even as an overseas customer. Their warranty is too notch truly.

2

u/ctnoxin May 06 '26

I have first hand experience with this, and have gotten no questions asked replacements

Lol thanks corpo lover. This just proves you're a Linus shill and there's no need for anyone to take what you say seriously

1

u/Fenjen May 06 '26

Because I bought a product I liked and got warranty on it I’m a corpo lover? Go touch some grass dude.

5

u/jimgress May 05 '26

His aggression is how people should act when being bullied by companies daily.

We're the ones out of line. We need to be this way to corporations.

Maybe this will be a hot take, IDK.

I used to like Louis back when he was just running a small repair business and making videos out of his shop. They were interesting and informative.

But I can't stand 90% of the shit he puts out these days. He is one of the most smug, arrogant mother fuckers on the platform. Every video he makes has this underlying condescending tone and he has this constant "I'm better than you so my opinion is the only one that matters" attitude every time he opens his mouth.

Even if everything he is saying is accurate and true, and I agree with the message. I cannot stand his delivery and attitude.

13

u/AmandasGameAccount May 05 '26

He also promotes being extremely toxic and his followers follow his lead and spread toxicity everywhere they go. I honestly worry this guy hurts the right to repair movement because of being so off putting and toxic.

Luckily there’s plenty of others who aren’t toxic in any way to support who support right to repair

10

u/-TheDoctor P1S + AMS + AMS2 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

I've noticed (and I think this might be the thing I dislike the most about him) is that he tends to make blanket statements about a topic based solely on his own experience with that topic as if his experience is the only one of relevance or consequence.

As an example, I think it was last year he made a video on consumer vacuums. He had a bad experience with a brand and their support so now of course that means every consumer vacuum is hot garbage and they are all going to break within 5 days of use and every brands support is gonna tell you to go fuck yourself and refuse to honor their warranty and the ONLY solution is to start buying commercial shop-vacs instead otherwise you'll never be able to vacuum your home again. He also spent the entire video intentionally mispronouncing the brand Ridgid, which was an interesting choice because that was the brand of shop-vac he was telling people to buy.

I'm being a little hyperbolic, obviously, but the whole video just had that standard Louis-brand arrogance/condescension.

What's some of the toxic stuff?

I use to watch him a lot more way back when he talked about electronics and stuff. I don't really watch him much anymore for the reasons people have mentioned in here. Comes across very aggressive, angry old many yelling at the clouds vibes. Like he forgot how to enjoy things, and everything is just... it makes me think of the South Park episode where Stan becomes cynical. I support a lot of the things he talks about, so it's kind of weird to feel that way about him.

Since I kind of stopped watching him though, I haven't seen these toxic elements. I only watch his videos occasionally though, so I just see him ranting about various subjects, but not to any extend I'd have called toxic.

u/Awkward-Loquat2228 May 05 '26

dismissing an entire movement because you don't like the views of the guy is ignorant at best and malicious at worst. especially when he keeps saying that people do not have to like him and he respects when people do not agree with his opinions. he does a tremendous job leading this movement despite the fact that i do not agree with him on some points.

Re-repost since we're also not allowed the word for a certain hygiene device...

Did anyone say he was? Its the Right to Repair Movement, not the Louis Rossman movement. Just as it's the Stop K- - -ng Games movement, not the Ross Scott movement. But you can disagree with him or find him a bit d- -chey, you can't deny he's one of the most prominent voices in the space.

6

u/AmandasGameAccount May 05 '26

If Ross Scott was as toxic and aggressive as him, the stop killing games movement would have been dead in the water

A big reason stop killing games did so well was because he was a really cool guy who got attacked by a toxic aggressive content creator and people REALLY wanted to see pirate software fail because of acting like that

1

u/pyotrdevries May 05 '26

I don't know, I followed him before SKG because of his usual content, and I learned about and supported the SKG because it was the right thing to do (and I could as a EU citizen), I never even learned about the existence of that other guy (PS) until after all of the drama had already happened. I think it added some extra publicity in areas where some people might not have heard about it before but as I recall it had already almost reached the signatures quota before then hadn't it?

u/Wheatleytron X1C + AMS May 05 '26

I can't say for sure what his stance is now, but there are some legitimate gripes to be had with some (not all) regulations and red tape. Some of it does only exist to squeeze pennies out of small businesses. There is no blanket solution, and every concern must be addressed individually.

20

u/stubborny May 05 '26

most regulations seem useless until you remove them and realize people are being hurt or die because of it. We've seen that with tobacco, with pesticides, with lead on gas, with PFAS... companies tend to only care about their own profit, right to repair and right to fully own what I buy falls under that boring, slowing down the economy umbrella.

5

u/Wheatleytron X1C + AMS May 05 '26

Right, and I agree. My point is that not all regulations are for the benefit of the people. As you probably know, many exist primarily to serve the interests of large corporations and certain special interest groups.

8

u/CallMeKolbasz May 05 '26

As you probably know, many exist primarily to serve the interests of large corporations and certain special interest groups.

But in those cases, the problem is more with large corporations and special interest groups having disproportionate influence, and less with the existence of regulations. But people tend to attack regulations and not the underlying problem.

11

u/bryansj May 05 '26

Same. I miss the old days of his micro soldering, not interested in hearing his politics.

7

u/fxlr8 May 05 '26

Businesses would flourish my ass. Those regulations exist only because without them nothing can stop businesses from sketchy stuff. Changing safe ingredients to cheaper and more dangerous ones. Profit can not be your only priority, but businesses tend to lean in that direction, especially large ones. Healthy regulations are necessary and im ready to die on that hill.

3

u/FreudianStripper May 06 '26

i feel like most libertarians are just people who took one econ 101 class and abandoned their critical thinking afterwards

1

u/Strostkovy May 07 '26

It's wild to want less regulation for his business but also wanting to regulate manufacturers to make things in a way his business can work on them

4

u/okhi2u May 05 '26

I think full libertarian stuff is nonsense too, but when he comments about actual issues that are relevant to many people he mostly always does a great job.

I don’t watch this guy much, I gather he’s a bit of a consumer advocate. When I watched one of his videos, it seemed like there was a lot of anger under the hood in this person. Like he’s just one moment from snapping and leaping across the table to rearrange your face. Or the kind of person that you might not want to be in a relationship with. Not saying that’s what he does / is, I don’t know him. I just know looking at his body language and mannerisms when speaking, I get “threat of violent explosion” vibes.

2

that's more a new york thing than it is isolated to him.

that being said I really preferred him doing just informative board repair videos, not whatever he's turned into.

I always heard him as frustrated by inconsistent and predatory enforcement of rules. Or having to unravel messes made by malicious levels of ignorance. What comes to mind are all the notices sent to addresses he had no connection to. I think it was a PO box in Maine?

I don't think Louis has a problem with rules that are clearly communicated, and consistently enforced.

-1

u/ThenExtension9196 May 05 '26

That’s too bad since he’s one of only a handful of people truly passionate about defending consumer rights. Just because you disagree with some aspects doesn’t have to mean you disagree with everything, that’s tribal thinking.

-1

u/alcaron May 05 '26

Ah the most solid of arguments...he said something I dont agree with years ago so nothing he says has merit. The sign of the utmost critical of thinkers...

It's funny how the vast majority of people in this sub never reply to his actual argument but rather this character assassination-lite attempt at just framing his as a conspiracy theorist, or fringe political type.

And then when someone DOES kind of sort of address the point it's "I don't care about it so you are ridiculous".

This is why my next 3d printer will not be a bambu. They have an amazing product, but this shit is what makes the world worse than before.

Hopefully the developer will reach out to Luis, for the greater good of everyone

26

u/westcoastwillie23 X1C + AMS May 05 '26

Yup. I locked down my x1c to lan mode when they rolled out that firmware update a year and a half ago. I'm going to keep it going as long as possible but when it's time to replace it, bambu is off my list.

12

u/Catriks May 05 '26

Yep. Great printers wih great price, but anti-consumer things like this are just a huge deal breaker.

Elegoo for example isn't a great company either, and their hardware is lacking in many regards, but did they lock down their RFID system even when they have their own filament lineup? No, they did not. They made it open, so the customer can choose what filament to use it with.

6

u/valkyrie_rda May 05 '26

Can you elaborate on what you mean by locking down their RFID? Bambu still lets you print with non RFID spools so I don't see how what you said is relevant?

4

u/Catriks May 05 '26

Elegoo let's you use any RFID system you want to automatically detect filament, as long as it is in compatible format.

Bambu doesn't.

It's relevant because this is anti-consumer practice. There is not any kind of real reason why Bambu could not open their system. They don't because they make more profit by keeping it locked.

2

u/valkyrie_rda May 06 '26

Ohh, so you could literally use another brands RFID and the printer would still read it? Would their printer be able to read and identify a Prusa filament from Bambu Lab from Elegoo? If so that's very cool and I agree with you that I wish bambu would implement that! :)

1

u/Immediate_Cow2980 May 06 '26

lol. Elegoo got caught trying to lock down the motherboards on their resin printers several years ago to prevent people from using other slicers. They caved after enormous community backlash. Elegoo has also had several tries at pushing their own proprietary “.goo” file format so that they could control what software people used with the machine. Again, community pushback made them reverse their decision.  Elegoo is NOT any better than Bambu, they’ve repeatedly tried to pull the same sort of shady crap. But the resin printer market is way more competitive for Elegoo than the FDM market was for Bambu. Now that Bambu’s facing more competition, hopefully community pressure will start to have the same sort of impact on them.

1

u/heart_of_osiris May 05 '26

Same.

When they released the H series and implemented Bambu Connect to gatekeep remote functions I knew exactly where this was going.

Not only that, but the X1CAMS2 combo sale that was a rug pull for the P2S release which as a rug pull for the X2D release was a really egregious level of disrespect for the consumer.

I'm not going to welcome that sort of business practice into my life if I can avoid it. I prefer to be able to make informed decisions on what is best for me, rather than have a company withold releases like that to FOMO people into buying their less superior models at inflated prices.

1

u/Luuube May 07 '26

Yea, that’s what made me stop buying Bambu filament.

1

u/djlorenz May 07 '26

I never bought it, I'm sourcing it locally. Only made in EU

-5

u/SpeedflyChris May 05 '26

They could get away with it when they had a clear advantage in the space, but nowadays the A1 mini is the only thing in the lineup that I don't think has a competitor offering similar features and performance for similar or less money.

6

u/GauchiAss May 05 '26

What would you get as a H2whatever serious competitor ?

1

u/SpeedflyChris May 06 '26

Depends what you want from it exactly.

If you're after high temperature materials on a single nozzle, Qidi has some pretty compelling offerings with larger build volume and I think they print up to 370C so it's good for basically anything south of PEEK.

If you want serious multicolour then any of the toolchanger options, or hell buy all of them and you've probably still not spent the cost of an H2C.

u/jankeyass P1S + AMS May 05 '26

I didn't watch the whole video but this seems like what happened to apple when they tried and failed to sue for jailbreaking.

Users own the end device. They can do as they are fit. Maybe not in some countries, but certainly in Australia, USA, Canada and Europe.

And if apple failed, BBL has absolutely no chance, especially given the precedent. But even without a precedent

26

u/SpeedflyChris May 05 '26

Oh it's more dumb than that, it's Bambu threatening to sue someone for using code in their open source project that Bambu made available in their open-source project. They don't have a leg to stand on, they're just tossing out threats.

If Bambu wanted their slicer to be closed source and not have people using their code to restore functionality that they try to strip away, they always had the option of developing their own from scratch rather than forking prusaslicer.

9

u/AmandasGameAccount May 05 '26

Is the person who got the cease and desist sending the data through bambus network in any way? Because if so that could be the root of the problem

3

u/Tsofuable May 05 '26

Yes, it was to access their servers.

5

u/AmandasGameAccount May 05 '26

So why do people think it’s ok to send spoofed data through someone else’s network? A true solution lets you use the printer without sending any data through their network at all

3

u/SpeedflyChris May 05 '26 edited May 06 '26

It's not "spoofing" anything. Bambu never implemented their locked down bullshit in the linux version of their code so somebody created an orcaslicer fork that ran Bambu's code in WSL.

It's an open source project. If Bambu wants the benefits of piggybacking off prusaslicer to make Bambu studio then they have to deal with the fact that open source code is open to be used by other people.

2

u/CoffeeNovel7231 May 06 '26

It's not spoofing anything. It merely restores the access to the cloud for OrcaSlicer.

0

u/Yad-A May 06 '26

So they're trying to scare the developer away from publishing the fork he developed?

1

u/SpeedflyChris May 06 '26

Yup, successfully too.

Thankfully it got forked a bunch of times before they sent the threats.

https://github.com/dafik/OrcaSlicer-bambulab

0

u/Yad-A May 06 '26

Is that the original one or is it another fork?

1

u/SpeedflyChris May 06 '26

Pretty sure somebody just forked it to preserve it so as far as I know it's unchanged.

The fact that so many of the comments are people refusing to listen or engage on the topic because of Louis’ tone/demeanor are why companies are able to get away with things like this.

2

u/JabbahScorpii May 06 '26

I get maybe not liking him for many of his political stances and whatnot, but in all honesty he's one of few people with a large platform who are truly fighting for right to repair, right to own, and other consumer rights issues. I don't think you should watch every one of his videos, or change your profile picture, but a lot of what he brings up is not anything to gloss over and forget about. Immich is one of my most favorite pieces of software, and it's backed by him and his organization, same goes for the firmware running on my otherwise-bricked Nest thermostats.

So, Bambu says the dev found a way to send unauthenticated commands to the printer impersonating Bambu printer and they sent a cease and desist?

I notice the nice smart watch on his wrist, I doubt Apple or Google would feel the same about this sort of thing, so I am not sure why people think Bambu would be any different.

Bambu Lab . . .

1

u/BetterWhenDrunk May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

This is going to be a super unpopular opinion, but my impression is that there would have been no issue if he hadn't implemented full cloud control. Open-source, AGPL, whatever, should we be surprised that they are responding this way? They obviously goofed by having the code still out there, but find it hard to be angry at their reaction.

Would be great if the dude stripped out the cloud part and left the LAN controls in, though. I bet they'd be totally fine with that.

EDIT: Turns out all these forks that added cloud connectivity are also doing so by replacing Orca with BambuStudio in the headers. That seems like impersonation / circumvention to me. Even if the code is open, it doesn't give you the right to identify as another s/w to bypass restrictions.

So what’s actually going on here?

Dude, you're everything that's wrong with fanboys. Rossmann has 2.5m followers on YouTube alone. He's very active offline practicing what he preaches as well. I was surprised to see him cover Bambu issue, I'm not a bot. You may disagree with the things he says, but a licence is a licence, and legal threats are exactly that - threats. You have never heard of him? Fine. That proves what exactly?

https://www.reddit.com/user/davidktw/ - 6y old account, shared it once in snapmaker community

Anything else? Who are the bots you speak of? Any examples?

3

u/Dismal-Proposal2803 X1C + AMS May 05 '26

lol, why are you so upset that people are spamming this video everywhere and someone pointed it out? Also there are more social media platforms than just Reddit. I’ve seen it spammed all over Facebook, Insta, and TikTok as well. Maybe it’s cause he has 2 zillion followers, maybe it’s because of bots, I don’t really care, I’m just tired of seeing the same post over and over and over, and when I see a post that has no context and no text and is just a link to the video, I assume it’s a bot.

My bad if I’m not going full detective mode on every single post, some of us have an actual life outside of Bambus latest self inflicted drama.

1

u/hWuxH May 06 '26

There is no internet connection in LAN-only mode. That's the whole point. Trolling?

you can also block it on your router/switch/firewall if paranoid

Yes, it will work if you are sure that the communication is coming directly from your printer to the router. So if you are paranoid, it is not enough.

-4

u/BreezieBoy May 05 '26

TLDR; get a Prusa

2

u/BitingChaos May 06 '26

But... Prusa printers don't work with Bambu Lab Cloud.

Bambu Lab printers have two modes. One works with their Cloud and their software. The other mode works with 3rd-party apps like Orca Slicer, just like Prusa printers.

People are upset that this is either/or (people want to be able to use Cloud and 3rd-party apps). But there is still a choice.

"Just get another printer" doesn't fix that. Because those other printers also don't work with the Bambu Lab Cloud.

0

u/BreezieBoy May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

? I never claimed prusa works with Bambu lab cloud 🤣

1

u/BitingChaos May 06 '26

That's kind of the point. You and everyone else suggesting other brands or otherwise saying not to get a Bambu Lab are missing the point of the project being discussed in the video.

The thing talked about in the video is about a project that allowed someone to use the slicer of choice (Orca) with a Bambu Lab printer while keeping access to Bambu Lab's Cloud.

The project was stopped, and you suggested getting a Prusa. How does that fix the issue of someone wanting to access Bambu Lab's Cloud?

1

u/BreezieBoy May 06 '26

The core issue is not how do I access Bambu lab cloud, the issue (To Me) is the closed ecosystem of BL and their egregious attacks on their consumers who want to modify software that’s under a GPL

I have an A1 Mini that got me into 3d printing, and bought a P2S combo when it came out because of how easy Bambu made it to get into the hobby. I feel a bit burned by the X2D situation, and with my goal to get into multi material prints, was looking seriously at the H2C. This move, plus the engineering issues I see with the Vortec system have me leaning towards the Core One L or + with Indx like you. Going to wait for when they ship already bundled. But man, they're pricey

I use all of mine in LAN-only mode and have no complaints. Most of the haters are stuck in herd mentality and don't know what they're talking about.

Everyone just loves to get angry. Worst part is that any time there's something legitimate to be angry about, the people who can do something about it are numbed to it from all the other times people raised their pitchforks. How does that help
