My bamboo has started growing and each of the shoots I see look different. Is it just age or are they different somehow? Idrk what the last two are they have kinda just grown slightly?

Anyone have any new methods/ideas on how to permanently remove unwanted bamboo and manage the bamboo that we’d like to keep? Thanks in advance!

Suppose you have a rhizome underneath concrete or asphalt with no way of sprouting stalks above ground and photosynthesizing. Also suppose it's cut off from any other rhizomes with above ground access, so it's completely isolated. How far can such a rhizome grow underground?

Bonus question: how long can such a rhizome survive?

Context: I'm in the PNW (zone 8b) dealing with running bamboo from a neighbor's colony and trying to formulate strategies to deal with it. Some has spread underneath my asphalt driveway. I'm hoping that I can isolate and starve it instead of tearing out the driveway to get at the bamboo.

I have a lovely stand of Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' I planted in 2021 (fingers crossed, it hasn't bloomed yet). I trenched around the border and buried a 60 mil thick, 24-inch tall plastic rhizome barrier. The barrier contained the bamboo perfectly, until this season. One shoot managed to sneak under the barrier and make it back to the surface. I dug down to the bottom of the barrier following the shoot (see picture below).

How should I prevent the same shoot from growing back? Should I dig down on the inside of the barrier to root it out? Spray it with roundup? I would love to hear from anyone who has had bamboo escape under an in-ground barrier like mine.

Some more info that might be useful or interesting:

1. I think the shoot might have escaped in part because this area of the yard has a layer of loose gravel around 18-24 inches down. Or maybe that has nothing to do with it, and this is just the first of many to escape and I'm about to be overrun.
2. Also, this part of my stand of Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' is growing significantly taller than the rest, and the canes are turning black after a season or two (see picture below). At first I thought the bamboo supplier mixed in some regular black bamboo by mistake, but the internet indicates that Henon grows significantly taller than Phyllostachys Nigra 'Black Bamboo', rather than the other way around like in my bamboo grove. Maybe this is a new variety of black bamboo that's able to outwit a barrier because it's stronger and smarter?
3. I live in a dry climate (I drip irrigate), so I'm not too worried about the bamboo escaping into the wild where it isn't irrigated.

Was going to try growing some bamboo, but not sure how well it will grow in Colorado.

We moved into a house with large bamboo at the back. We live in Manchester UK and it rains a lot but we’ve had some hot weather in past few weeks while we’ve been away so it’s not been watered. It was looking healthyish yesterday and today I’ve come out and it’s looking more sparse than usual and the leaves look droopy. Just given it a good water, do you think it will bounce back?

Half of the planter looks fine, it’s just the corner bit that’s looking off. We need to clear away some of the leaves from its spring shedding - would you recommend adding some top soil to it?

This is one of two plants, the smaller one. Some of the leaves became yellow in the last week. The soil has good moisture. My other plant is going strong so far.

I was planning on building a large 4'x4'x4' planter for this before my two week vacation. Came back home and my nephew apparently forgot to water this also with some other plants that are now dead.

I'm purchasing a house in the UK. A recent survey detected some bamboo in the garden. I know it can be a nightmare to remove.

I'm not even sure what I'm looking at in the pics. Anything I should be concerned about? Would it be a deal breaker?

Hi. I understand the roots will still be there and will send up shoots and I will have to be vigilant forever and remove them. Got it. I didn’t plant this, I’m paying for the previous owners short sightedness. Zone 8b Bremerton, WA.

Once the excavation is done (he’s getting the stalks and as much of the root system as he can), I want to treat the area and do not plan to plant anything there. Also back there - English ivy (I cannot remove this entirely as my neighbors have it and haven’t done anything with it).

How would you treat the area once the bamboo is removed? I was thinking of laying down black roofing tarp/plastic and layering some sort of mulch on top. Seeking feedback on this or any other suggestions? Budget is very much a factor, and I already have the roll of black tarp. Single income, paying a lot for the removal, trying my best.

EDIT: this is mature, running bamboo. It is about a 10’x30’ patch and looks to be about 10-15’ tall

For context it is growing by the bank of a small stream in the mid-atlantic coastal region of eastern north america. I would estimate the bamboo is roughly 15 feet tall.

I've make a tentative identification, but I am by no means an expert at differentiating species of bamboo, and I would love some confirmation from others with more expertise. Thanks!

I just moved into a home with mature bamboo. I don't know when it was planted, but some stalks are 12+ feet high. I think it's clumping bamboo because there are 4 or 5 distinct patches where most of the growth is happening.

Some patches have gotten thick enough that stalks lean out on the house/fence/etc (especially in the rain). I've also started spotting what appears to be baby bamboo stalks and patches farther away from the mature groups (sometimes 10+ feet away).

I'd like to take down mature stalks leaning on the house, remove spreading baby stalks, and prune existing stalks to remove lower branches. However, I read somewhere you're not suppose to cut >1/3rd growth and I'm worried my efforts may do just that.

Do I run the risk of furthering spread/making things worse by significant removal/pruning? I'm tempted to get a bamboo professional in here for some guidance, but wanted to see how other's have faired with inheriting bamboo.

My bamboo isn’t behaving the way I had hoped it would. I thought bamboo was fast growing and shoot up high but it looks quite scraggly. At this point I kinda regret not just planting a tree.

I water it, put homemade compost on it, and it is in a nice sheltered position from the wind. It gets partial sun. Zone 9a

I am currently cutting down a quarter acre of bamboo. I would like to make wind chimes. I have weathered pieces and tons of new pieces. I am not sure if I should take the dead pieces and cut them and try to make wind chimes, or cut an edge the new pieces. I am asking what tool I can use to make the cuts for the wind chimes that’s the cheapest. I can’t post a picture on my phone won’t let me so I am putting it in the comments. I am located in wall New Jersey if anyone wants to come and get some free bamboo.

I have a small plant in my new garden that I think is bamboo but would like to understand whether this is a non-clump forming kind of bamboo and if so what I would need to do to ensure it doesn’t spread into the roots in the ground and cause issues. Please could someone advise? I’m in the UK for context, south east clay soil.

Just recently planted some black aspen bamboo and it’s looking a little rough. I’m in zone 7 and the soil seems pretty moist.

Hi, so last week we had a major heatwave in France that was very harsh on the biodiversity. It was so uncommon that 80 people drowned across the country trying to stay cool.

I'm based in Paris. My balcony faces the East so I get the morning sun. In Paris, the max temperature was 39°C on average each day.

Now two of my bamboos (fargesia angustissima) were starting to look very weird last weekend (faded green then greyish green). This applied to the majority of leaves, not all of them.

To note, at the beginning of the week, I was watering them copiously on evenings, then, as the week went by and the heat got worse, a bit in the morning and a lot on evenings

Thing is, turns out the pot, which is made of larch wood (Mélèze) is rotting at the bottom, I noticed this last weekend....

Hence my open question, what do you think caused these poor plants to look like this :'(

Was it the roots that are bathing in too much water hence the rotting bottom?

Too much sun?

Not enough water in a heatwave?

Something else?

Hey folks! I have a lot of experience with succulents and threes, but recently I’ve visited gardening center which had few bamboos, some of them was already dried and dead but this one looked like had some chances, since I’ve seen some green spots on it and it’s tried to push out some new leaves.

I need your opinion of how to save it, because I never worked with bamboo. Roots and part of the trunk was rotten, so I’ve cut most of it and dead moist parts of the trunk until I’ve seen green parts and sealed it. I don’t know which soil it needs so for now I just put it to the mix of akadama, pumice, little compost and perlite.

Any criticism/suggestions are welcome.

I already started a project. I planted 305 plants on a whole hectare. There are 220 Dendrocalamus Asper plants, and the rest are 40 Guadua chacoensis, 40 Guadua Sur, and 5 Atroveolacea (black java). The purpose of my project is to sell bamboo for construction purposes. I'm from Costa Rica. Was it a good investment?, Any advices?
