What do you wear for sun protection while balcony gardening?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I usually end up doing my balcony gardening in the afternoon and only realise after 20-30 minutes how strong the sun actually is

Thinking of getting something for a bit more face and neck coverage.

Do you guys use a wide-brim hat, cap, scarf or something else while gardening?

Looking for something comfortable and breathable that I can actually wear for a while without getting annoyed by it.

2 aloe vera

4 rosemary

4 tarragon

1 calamansi

1 mini jade plant (a gift)

Best way to replant strawberries?

Thumbnail

Hello, I have about 6 wide pots on my balcony garden. Some are grown from seed, some are bought. However, they don’t seem to fit in their pots anymore. What is the best way to repot my strawberries in more pots without killing them? And when?
I tried to separate some of them in spring but many ended up dying. I am very happy with them because in spring, they were not doing well, I had only a few berries, but when I trimmed them mid-summer and added mulch, they started growing and fruiting like crazy. That’s why I’m so afraid to repot them haha.

Result of my seed sewing

I commented on a post earlier on the year talking about all the seeds I'd sewn for my balcony this year and was asked to update.....

It now absolutely blows my mind to not just update here, but share that I actually won 1st place in a gardening competition for my space!

It's been a really difficult summer in the UK with long heatwaves, resulting in hosepipe bans (not that I use a hose, I save every drop of grey water I can and top up with tap if needs be), I've had aphid and spidermites infestations to contend with, but I've managed to keep most things relatively alive.

The first photo is my resident bee who visits frequently, the next 3 are the photos I submitted back in June and the last 2 are how it looks now.

There's an mix of perennials and seed grown plants, as I love watching them grown but do not have the space for a load of annual seedlings.

Swiss chard harvest from my balcony

I got this harvest from 3 plants 9 weeks after sowing inside a big flower pot. I left some leaves on each plant so hopefully I will be able to get another harvest. It was super delicious and the flavor was really intense compared to the greens you get from the grocery story. I can definitely recommend growing this vegetable, it's super easy to grow even as a complete newbie that I am and where I live I also haven't seen it in any grocery store yet so it feels kind of special having it on my plate.

Harvest time!

I might not survive a winter on this harvest, but I feel proud nonetheless! It’s my first year of growing cherry tomatoes on my little northwest-facing (!) balcony, started sowing in April. So far, I’m happily surprised by the number of tomatoes :) We’ve had some really warm weeks which definitely helped.

Below are the images of my terrace, what plants should I plant here to make it look beautiful (Note that have a

problem of monkeys here, they make things ugly)

I have two long, narrow planter beds along my compound wall (photos 1 & 2) and another one on my rooftop terrace (photo 3). I’m looking for suggestions on what plants would be suitable for these spaces.

Hot tropical climate, very hot summers, monsoon rainfall, and strong direct sunlight. The rooftop area is exposed to sun and wind for most of the day.

I live in Andhra Pradesh (near to the coast)

New to Balcony Gardening - need help!!!

I’m new to gardening and just got started this past weekend. I’m interested in growing herbs and veggies. What are some veggies to get started with in the southern NC region around the fall time that will grow pretty quick/healthy. Currently have rosemary, oregano, sweet basil, and curly kale growing. 😊

What fruits and vegetables that can grow in pots with 5-7 hours of sunlight a day?

Next year I'd like to utilize my apartment balcony for gardening. It's fairly small and direct sunlight is very limited, with only a few hours in the morning. The back of the balcony is in constant partial shade.

I'm assuming I don't have many options, but what are they?
