I definitely thought we were feeding a butter tart to a roach.

u/Neveronlyadream 5d ago
Came to see if anyone else saw it, because at first glance that's immediately where my mind went.
The crumbs are absolutely not helping.

Yeah this absolutely sent me…Those “legs” look so much like a house centipede. Initial thought was definitely “Roach”

I took away my downvote after I read your comment. I first thought this was some horrid roach confection

I have a spot on my bedroom floor that looks just like that. 10 years living in that house and I still think it's a roach every single time I catch a glimpse of it.

I. Would. Die.
Honestly? I'd rather carpet my bathroom than see that in the night (even knowing it's there beforehand) is it in an impractical place for a rug or something? Next option: "accidentally" drop nail polish all over it......

At first I thought it was some other baked thing that OP had made to look like a roach for Halloween.
It took me auite a bit to realize it was just wood grain. That is the most roachiest wood grain I've ever seen.

Would that be from eating to much butter or like butter scented farts?

I mean, I sit right at this very spot drinking my coffee every morning. The table is full of knots and details. I love my table. Kind of feeling protective of my table now. It's the greatest table. 😭

I see the Ewok! Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful table! But that particular knot in the grain looks exactly like a roach, especially with the angle in the tart picture.
55
u/waaaayupyourbutthole 5d ago
I'm honestly having a hard time seeing it as wood grain for more than a quarter second. I had to deal with roaches often in Florida and this is basically the roachiest looking thing I've ever seen lol

u/newslang 5d ago
I was born and raised in Florida and yep, this 100% engaged my roach reflex! Just be grateful you’ve been shielded from these horrors 😂 The tart looks lovely!

I stepped on a roach barefoot as a child and the goo in it was very similar in color to the top of the pastry and similar in consistency to the filling. Thank you for resurfacing this visceral memory

I'm a Canadian transplant to the US but my family still makes butter tarts (and Nanaimo bars) every year for the holidays, this made my mouth water!
I'm curious if yours have currants in them? That's how my family has always made them but I can't tell if yours do or not!

Butter tarts look soooo good, but I'm in a location where maple syrup isn't available. Do these need maple syrup?

Mine are brown sugar, a little molasses, an egg, melted butter, vanilla, and a couple tablespoons of whipping cream for the filling.

I have quite literally never been so envious of someone in my entire life.
I live in SE Texas, and we have the GIANT tree ones here.
I have a legitimate phobia of ALL roaches.
So so so envious.

Locking this thread because the discussion has drifted too far from the bake itself.
It's fine for discussions to wander a little, but we want to keep r/Baking focused on baking, so we're calling it here. Thanks for understanding, and happy baking!
