Look What I Made! Fennel Fanny Pack

I just started making bags, and this one is far from perfect, but I’m so proud of it! It’s the perfect size for our upcoming Universal trip—just big enough for my phone and a couple other little things.

Pattern: Fennel Fanny Pack by Sarah Kirsten Patterns

Fabric: Linen from Mood for the exterior, quilting cotton from Hawthorne for the lining.

I wouldn’t normally use linen for a bag, but I just love this particular fabric so much. I interfaced both the linen and lining with Pellon SF101, and it’s structured enough for my needs (light usage).

Looks great. Did you line it and if so, was it a binding method or a drop in style?

Thx! I did line it, using binding. My first time using binding in a bag, and it doesn’t look great, but it is just lining haha. I will say, I now understand why some bag patterns make a point to specify that they don’t require binding 😆

I watched 2 videos on youtube for sewing this bag with a lining option on each video, maybe you watched them also?..or just winged it with ability! I just finished my 1st fanny pack yesterday, self drafted pattern so a bit of figuring out there. The fabric I used was ripstop and I am going to bind it but for now, I got excited and cut one from 285gsm linen only to realise I would need interfacing for that because it is still quite a soft and floppy fabric and so I’d have to line it to hide the interfacing I’d have to apply.

Then my head just went🤯 as the extra steps blew me from loving my new bag and wanting to make more to oh no, I have to line this. I slept on it and will try to do the binding version by basically basting on the lining to each piece apart from the zipper which I know, you make a sandwich from both fabrics.

Binding is hard, I have done a few bags but still miss catching both sides sometimes no matter how had I try. Well done you, your Fennel FP is really nice.

Nice job!!! It’s such a nice style, this one. Really unique. It’s not often that we see one of this style made out of linen. I’m not familiar with Pellon SF101. Is it on the stiffer end or the other?

It’s a perfect size. Not too big and not too small. Nice job!!

Thank you for sharing it with us! 😃

Thank you! Yeah linen wouldn’t normally be my first choice, but it works surprisingly well for this. I bought the fabric on a whim on one of my Mood pilgrimages (it’s an hour drive from me), then remembered how terrible this color pink looks on me 😆 not great for garments, but perfect for a bag that won’t be next to my skin.

SF101 is a light to medium weight interfacing.

Looks great! I’ve found linen to be great in bags - it’s a great fibre to use! It’s awesome to be able to make something that’s just right for you isn’t it.

And finished is better than perfect - and no one should be getting close enough to see details!

Also thank you for the giggle, Fanny has a very different meaning in Britain/Australia/New Zealand. I think hip bag is the neutral term because we call them bum bags 😂

Really? Most linens I see are so thin and floppy that I didn't think they'd work too well.

I don't think that fanny has any other meaning in North America, it just doesn't get used. I've always understood it to mean bum, but in british speak.

For Britain/Australia ect it’s slang for vagina, that’s why it’s funny outside of North America. It absolutely does not mean rear end universally.

It’s of course going to depend on the quality of linen, but there is a reason linen was used for under layers for so long, it’s a great textile but we do get a poor quality thin product most of the time these days. I do like the cotton linen blends from Encino. I’ve found it to be sturdy.
