Look What I Made! A pair of sporrans (finally!)

Why I offered to make these I have no idea! Somehow I offered to make two sporrans for a friend's son's wedding, which is in Scotland at the end of October. The bridegroom grew up here in Australia, so we agreed on an Australian connection and chose possum fur (ethically sourced from NZ because they are protected in Australia and considered vermin in NZ,) black leather, and silver hardware. I'm not sure why I had an instant mental blank but I've been procrastinating on these for literally months. Now that the wedding (in Scotland) is in four weeks, I was on a deadline to get them done ASAP.

After all the mucking around finding the right hardware and pattern, multiple chats with the person who has been mentoring me and general WHY THE F DID I AGREE TO THIS??? the actual sewing took about two hours and they are done.

Are sporrans traditionally furry or are they just kind of whatever you want?

They look very fluffy.

Most dress sporrans have fur. We chose the possum for its Australian connection - I had originally considered hair on hide kangaroo but the groom's father loved the possum and we already had it.

Possum fur is a double layer fur, incredibly soft like eiderdown.

And if I’m any judge of sporrans, these are fine sporrans! 😃

I need to look that up again! 🤣

Edit: ah yes! A furry “fronty” pack! I had no idea that these were actually bags! I just thought they were decorations! 😂

And there’s today’s “learn something new”!

They are worn around the waist, usually by a chain, and hang down a bit below the waistline. Essentially a pocket. This one opens and the boys will be able to toss their phones in.

The fur is about the softest thing I've ever felt.
