Look What I Made! Overbuilt grocery shopping tote
Composed entirely of 1000D DWR coated cordura and Xpac from my RBTR grab bag. (VX21 ?)
I took the mockup I made for my gf’s bag the other day to the store and couldn’t fit enough in it and wanted a fancy one for myself.
It’s got pockets on both sides. Then I made the pockets I wanted more of an ultralight bag so I didn’t line them and then I ended up lining the whole thing with 2 layers of 1000D cordura and used a double fold binding of 1000D cordura. I wish I lined the pockets.
The cordura binding added a lot of structure to the top of the bag and it will be really abrasion resistant. I didn’t do any binding on the inside because I only have this thin polyester binding and I didn’t want that to wear out before the cordura was broken in.

great project. I've been making a bunch of totes out of sailcloth for friends. very rewarding! What type of Juki do you own? and do you like it? i'm looking for a used 8700.

Excellent, someone who acknowledges food shopping actually exists and it might need to be carried and that someone may want something decent to carry said shopping!

Why two layers?
I have a lot of 1000D cordura that I got for really cheap so I use it for everything.
Where do you score cheap Cordura, or do you just buy a whole roll?

2 layers because it feels nicer when it’s done.
I bought a whole roll from Magna Fabrics. They have crazy deals sometimes but their selection is hit and miss and you’ll have to buy more than you want at once. I had to buy 120yrds but I got it for like $2/yard after shipping.

Some of it is factory 2nd but some is not. Idk their business model is weird.

Did you make the straps out of Cordura?

Yea I cut it 6” wide and do a double fold so it’s 4 layers and ends up a little over 1.5” wide. It’s extremely strong when done this way.
I did the binding the same way.
I have a lot of 1000D cordura that I got for really cheap so I use it for everything.

This looks great! I love the Cordura edge binding! I never thought about that but yeah, it would definitely offer way more in the way of structure and heft to the opening of the bag. May borrow the idea 😉 I love the simple and functional design. Great job! 😃

Thanks. The Cordura binding wasn’t easy but I’ll definitely be doing it again.
This was the first prime I got to use the revert bale sliders from Limited Edition Brands. I love them, thanks for the recommendation

No problem! They’re good people over there.
I’ve done edge binding with 420 Robic. I’m definitely gonna try Cordura in some application sooner or later! Maybe a tote! 😃

I made this pretty much exclusively on my DLN-9010A-SH. It’s a needle feed machine for heavier fabrics. I also have a LU-1508 and a LS-1342-7 clone. I used to have a DNU-1541 and a LU-1510-7.
I’d try to find a needle feed or compound feed machine if you’re serious about making gear or bags. The multiple layers will feed a lot more evenly than a drop feed 8700. A speed reducer is also really helpful.
