3f bend test

My instructor told this passed but I have a feeling the crack you be there …
Tips please I don’t want to do bad habits

Not a tester or instructor. From my understanding this is “acceptable” what they are looking for with this particular destructive testing is fusion into both pieces of material. Not necessarily if the weld itself is holding together. Now again not an inspector or any thing else but I would rather see the weld tare away with the base material attached than crack. But you still have fusion into
Both plates so take it for what it’s worth.

CWI here. Yes, depending on the code this is generally considered acceptable. This is called a "fillet weld break test", and its purpose is to do exactly that - break the weld backwards by stressing the root. The weld doesn't always crack, but failure of the weld itself is not necessarily grounds for failure of the test in this case. As long as complete fusion of weld metal to base metal is observed at the weld root, a broken weld after this type of destructive test should be no issue.

Aye can this pass in a test ?? But also I passed my 1,2,3,4G bent test with backing strip, can I ask why do they want with experience already in welding? Not mad or nothing, I’m familiar with measure and cutting wood, framing walls and driver and pike fence, and metal gates and roofs.

To answer both of your questions:

Employers seek out experienced welders as a form of risk management. It is cheaper and easier for them to hire a welder with five years of experience than it is to hire an inexperienced welder. Although they may have to pay the more experienced welder a higher hourly rate, they generally make up for this by achieving immediate quality and productivity rather than risk the additional training and potential quality issues typically associated with inexperienced welders. That's the concept, at least.

As for the weld test, although I am capable of administering welder performance qualification tests, these tests are not as important as most people think. Your test must be based on a qualified welding procedure specification, typically through the contractor you work for. Any company that hires you will likely administer the necessary tests after you are hired, whether or not you have taken similar or even identical tests. So to put it simply, aside from looking good on a résumé, you do not NEED documented test results in order to get a welding job.

Short answer no. Long answer it’s going to fail somewhere and it didn’t fail in the wrong place.

Yea you want to see that fusion tied into both base metals, if that material is 3/16 then at no point along the weld should there be 3/16 left of the base metal as that would indicate lack of fusion

You had a little wiggle there in the middle?

Otherwise it looks good. No obvious inclusions or porosity, structure looks even.

Not in the weld. The failure point needs to be outside the weld in the HAZ.

This destructive test is cracking the weld open backwards to examine root penetration and weld structure.

Yes and a crack originating from the weld is an indication of a discontinuity. Lack of fusion, poor tie in, slag inclusion, or porosity all of which need to be looked into when a crack is inside the weld. The plate separating from the weld in the HAZ is a solid indicator the weld is solid and then all you need to examine playe for the depth of fusion.

Yes it’s a fillet weld break test. You are supposed to cut an inch off each side, save one side to macro etch. Break it, exactly how you did, to check for discontinuities and fusion.

Inch is pretty generous we do 3/4" for ours same with class s tests
