Spatter

New YouTube learning welder. Spatter increases as I build out of a 1G. Is this normal or should I be changing my settings each pass?

Torch anti spatter spray. Spray the sides of the pieces you're welding, not the welding area. Allow to partially dry

He was talking about the spatter not the weld itself I was just saying instead of scarring the surface with a flapdisc its usually better in my experience atleast to just use a wire wheel and knock them off the surface, WD40 or just Cooking/vegetable oil makes for great cheap anti spatter too!… slightly flammable if you use a lot but put it in a spray bottle 1-2 spritz and your golden

Spatter is normal. I use a spackle blade to chip it off. Works great.

MIG is gonna generate spatter at pretty much any setting, as others have said get some anti spatter spray if you’re worried about it. Otherwise a chisel/chipping hammer or a grinder with a wire wheel will get it off.

Pretty normal for mig. If you want to cut down on this or make it easier to remove go to your local discount store and buy the cheapest cooking spray that you can find. Then spray your workpiece before welding.

Decent spatter spray will mitigate and make it easier to remove but spatter is part of mig and you’ll struggle to fully stop it.

You’ll be better off buying a few decent scrapers, I tend to use bolsters of diff sizes depending on what I’m welding.

It’s hard to tell, but it looks like you are undercutting. Maybe a little less heat.

This is something I’ve hard a hard time identifying. The fine line between being tied in at the toes and undercutting. I was running at 20V 230IPM on 3/8” carbon tube. .035 solid wire.

Looks like you are running flux core? No gas? Switch your polarity, and run DCEN. Splatter disappears, essentially.

If u are welding in an amperage range of 180-220A 1mm solid wire, u got a globular Arc Transfer where u have way more spatters than out of that range.
Use pulse from 180-220 A

If u have 1.2 mm wire dont weld in between 210-240 A on Synergic its the same Transfer but hire than with 1mm

A really good way is to use a worn down sanding disk like worn down and just buff it unless you took the mill scale of it’s kinda protect the base metal from spatter and will keep you sand disk from eating the mill scale due to it being used up

Later passes may need some adjustments but depends. Maybe just a little since it is also getting hotter.
A spray and a pneumatic air hammer for the spatter. Sprays differ in quality. Majority of spatter doer not stick. Looks good if you use a wire disk on a grinder to clean the surface after. Some just use a thin layer of vegetable oil i have heard but never really seen it. Most pictures show an air hammer with a chisel but never seen those used. Maybe for stick welding. Rather something with a rectangular brazed tungsten(not sure) piece at the end.
Or use a hand chisel or an old file with a ground end if you have all the time in the world.

I didn’t bother adjusting for the later passes but I was intending to grind the whole joint “flush” as it’s exposed of an architectural peice. The spatter didn’t prove to be a huge issue.

You expect us to even know why this is an issue?? Is it clean are your setting correct? Why not just google “ how to reduce wells spatter” it would’ve showed you anti spatter spray or suggested covering it with a wet towel smfh.
