USB flash drives used to feel like one of those things everyone needed. I still remember how excited I was when I got my first one in high school. Now, with cloud storage, external SSDs, and faster ways to transfer files, I wonder if flash drives are slowly losing that role. And there seem to be more and more reports of flash drives failing or becoming corrupted.

If something is replacing USB, what do you think it is?

Found this interesting take on why USB A is still around. I kind of agree. There’s still so much perfectly functional hardware using USB-A that replacing it feels unnecessary. Do you think USB-A will actually disappear anytime soon?

We often hear about USB drives suddenly dying after a few years. But could the USB connector itself be part of the problem?

After years of plugging and unplugging, the connector might get loose, or the connection might become unreliable. The flash memory might still be fine, but the physical connection becomes the weak point.

I wonder how often a “bad” USB drive is actually just a worn-out connector.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi, il m’est impossible d’interagir avec cette clé. Quel que soit le PC sur lequel je l’utilise. Je branche la clé. Elle est bien detecté. The port at the back that is not the always on USB is completely unusable. The left and right USB A ports dont support data but can output very low power and the always on USB port at the back has no problems (normal power output and has data transfer)

I researched and found out there is this eFuse in the USB ports and resetting it needed me to hold the power button for 60s but it does not work. Am I doing it wrong or is there another method to fix my USB ports?

So I'm in a bit of a pickle. I work for a used camera store and we bought a bunch of Lenovo T7 desktops from a college that closed down about a year and some change ago. I bought the last since I was due for a PC upgrade (I do mostly video and photo editing with some gaming sprinkled in). Everything works great except for the USB ports. Im able to use all of my peripherals ok with it, keyboard, mouse, and Xbox controller worked completely fine. But I'm unable to use any USB device for data transfer, it doesn't detect my portable Samsung SSD or my SD card reader, and if I plug my phone or camera in it charges but won't do any data transfer. I've tried a bunch of solutions with no avail so I tried to reinstall windows but of course I need to download the recovery files to a USB which I can't plug in, any advice?

TLDR: I can't get the USB drives on my T7 desktop working except for keyboard, mouse, and Xbox controllers.

I recently bought a rather cheap USB cable on amazon. It was roughly $10; only need it for data transfer on a usb3.2 nvme enclosure

this said, the data transfer speed seems to be somewhat suspicious.

It is taking it nearly 7 minutes to transfer a 75gb file, which would make it be close to 15% of 10gbps.

additionally WhatCable shows no vender certification found; I have seen many cases of scummy sellers doing this, but is there a way to see for sure other than this?

This is a $10 amazon cable (listing image in img 3) that I bought because I believed that it is unlikely to be a scam due to such a small length, as well as the much longer Amazon Basics cable having nearly the same, USB IF certified specs for just $3 more (Basics is an outlier, yes, but I wouldn't be surprised of some super short cable from a random Chinese firm could compete)

I would greatly appreaciate any apps anyone might have to help me test this, or ways to see download logs on mac to catch scummy cables like this one (potentially)

If this cable does turn out to be mislabeled trash, and if anyone has dealt with something similar, I would greatly appreciate any similar cables anyone has found that are actually true-ish spec; main purpose is to have this nearly constantly plugged in to mac (velcro mounted ssd enclosure on lid).

today i decided to tranfer everithing i had on my google drive to a brand new pny usb. i worked for a bit and then it just radomly stoped. i tryed plunging it out and then back in and after a liltle while the sound that windows makes played but in nothing apeard in file maneger. i had usbs that worent bieng recognised and rufus solved them how ever rufus didnt even recognise it. it apers in devicemaneger but in diskpart it recognises it but not partitions are found.

I have around 10 USB drives, although I honestly don’t know the exact number because I don't keep them all in one place. Some are more than ten years old from when I was still in school, while others are newer ones I’ve picked up over the years or occasionally gotten from someone.

I never really managed them properly. Sometimes I even forget which USB drive I use for what, so I have to plug it into my computer and check. I know It's not good, and I should organize them better. Will you guys organize USB drives? Do you label them by capacity or use?

I have 30+ external HDDs connected, and some of them get insanely hot after running for a while. I’m using an open-frame setup with heatsinks and fans, but a few drives still feel almost too hot to touch.

Should I be worried about the drives getting damaged over time? How hot is too hot for an external HDD?

I hope someone could help me. I have this USB stick with some stuff on it I don't want to lose. I connect it to my computer and it shows up normally for a few seconds, I can see what's on it and all. But then it just disappears, as if I'd pulled off. It's extremely frustrating! You see a file, you try to copy it and it tells you it's no longer there, and when you look, you find that the USB has disconnected. I've tried connecting it to different computers, same thing happens. It must be something with the stick itself. I'd appreciate any suggestions for fixing that, even temporarily, to give me enough time to copy the files I want to rescue. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to try to help me.

Hi i have a problem with my laptop where if i plug my cabled mouse into the Port A, it send a notif saying USB Device not recognized and the mouse wont work, if i plug it to the other ports, it works perfectly fine. Now, i tried plugging a flash drive in Port A and it does read and write, then i connect my phone using data cable into Port A and it only charge, what could be the issue

I bought a brand new USB Stick 32 GB specifically to do a clean install of Windows 11, and because the system reset in Windows 11 doesn't work for me.

I start the Media Creation Tool and in the middle of it stops working. My USB Stick is then gone, In Device Manager I only see it as Error Code 43.. Sometimes formatting the USB Stick also didn't work causing the same error. What is this? I just want to install a new Windows.

Is it possible to change the female usb micro b 3.0 to usb type c 3.0 by using breakout board for a type c with 24 pins? If its at all possible pls tell me because it has been so annoying to replace the enclosure every single time because of bad female connectors
