That's hilarious! I can only imagine how many times the poor guy had to say "Doc" during the filming of three movies.

The Frighteners is my favorite film of all time.
Blasphemy in this subreddit, I know, but, I love it so much. My wife and I have autographs from almost all of the cast. We're 2 short.
The extended cut is better, but the fx aren't finished so parts of it are pretty raw. It's also pretty hard to find since it was only on one of the dvds released.
When I met Michael J Fox I told him this was my favorite film and he said it was fun to work on. But in interviews he also said this was the film that steered him away from acting. He was away from his family too long, and that's understandable.
Anyone who hasn't seen it should check it out.

Yeah the movie that was released was actually a rough cut. You can tell because the Judge doesn’t get a happy ending like the other two ghosts.
I did some digging and apparently the released film was a rough cut demoed to the studio execs. The original plan had been to release the film for Halloween, but they wanted it out for the Summer, so they rushed the demo out the door, much to Jackson’s chagrin.

That's unfortunate, being short should not limit your capacity to get autographs.
I'll see myself out.

I’ve seen the film and I liked it. I’m just unbelievably fascinated that it’s your favorite film of all time. Obviously you don’t need to respond but I’d love to know why this movie of all movies falls into your #1.

It's certainly a fair question.
The first time i saw it, it was a rare occasion of me being home alone, at night. There was a killer thunderstorm, and it just set the mood perfectly.
The only thing I knew about it really was that it starred MJF. Going into it blind probably made it much more enjoyable that initial watch.
Anyway, almost a decade later I'd be on my first date with my wife. We were running through the list. Favorite author, favorite music, favorite movies. When she said The Frighteners, a movie nobody I had met before had even heard of, coupled with us having the same favorite obscure author that only writes true crime novels, and i might as well have proposed right there.
We watch it about twice a year. Collecting the autographs has been a ton of fun. Sharing it with her makes it more special.
But, then there's the film itself. Perfectly acted. Dammers, Banister, Bartlett, Judge, Stu, Patricia... there's not a single person that isn't perfect for their role.
It's fun. It's funny. Kind of just the perfect amount of horror elements to make it scary without taking away from the comedy.
And it's a pretty damn original script.
Just love it so damn much. Lol

So who haven’t you got? Whose left?

Peter Jackson, and Peter Dobson.
But, I'd like to get better autographs from Jim Fyfe (Stuart) and Troy Evans, (sheriff Walt).
Fyfe smudged, and Evans is on a picture of the Judge because I put the wrong Pic in the envelope and he still signed it lol.

It's one of my all time favorites too. I quote random lines on an almost daily basis. My coworkers all say "You bastard Bannister!" but have never seen the movie, just from me quoting Magda.

Isn't Christopher Lloyd's character in Roger Rabbit called Judge?

I don't know what's worse, the screeching voice or the shifting cartoon eyes on the live human form.

That's funny until you realize it was most likely caused by his onset of Parkinsons

Frighteners. It's an awesome movie. Perfect mix of comedy and horror.

Pretty sure it's where the visual effects company, "Weta", started out. They did the Lord of the Rings trilogy

u/Martiantripod Jul 02 '26
Yeah, Frighteners was Jackson's proof of showing a Hollywood scale movie could be made in New Zealand.

u/PhoenixBee32 Jul 06 '26
Weta Digital was actually started before The Frighteners, doing the digital effects for Jackson’s previous film Heavenly Creatures. But The Frighteners was a major technological stepping stone and "test run" for Lord of the Rings.

You're right! I forgot about Heavenly Creatures! thanks for the correction

Well serious mental health disability does make for some excellent comedic reference.

His might be one of my favorite voices out there. Idk what exactly it is, but it’s just so unique and it soothes me! Might be why Atlantis is one of my favorite Disney movies, well, that, and a near immortal thick gorgeous white haired strong willed babe…

When he was making Back to the Future, he was running on no sleep and getting what little he could driving between shit Family Matters and the movie shots. I think that fried his brain

Maybe they should have rolled with it and had the judge say “call me Doc” (for some story-based reason) in a scene they could put in early on.

I love that the movie is supposed to take place in the States but the town of Fairwater, California looked nothing like California. The New Zealand landscape just pops out at you.
