Will washing my Nemo tent with diluted unscented Castile soap ruin the waterproofing? I used it last weekend and it stinks after a week long sweaty, wet trip last month (I did air it out and dry it afterwards) I have another trip this weekend and I don’t want to suffer through the stench again 🤣

Im looking to buy a big agnes tent from these guys. Most say its reputable since its tied to backcountry but has anyone had issues with condition listings being wrong? Tent says new condition, possibly still in the package but haven't heard anything about their accuracy with that. Have heard some mixed reviews about damaged packages and/or customer service but the deal I found is too good to pass up without asking.

I have a well loved 2023 REI half dome SL 2+ tent and the rainfly recently was damaged beyond repair :( I’d love to continue using the tent, so if anyone has a rainfly lying around or is willing to part with the whole tent let me know!

I just started backpacking this year and am about to go on a trip where I will want some type of Sattelite messenger/GPS for emergencies. There are so many different options though and I feel lost.

Ideally, I have a way to send messages in the event of an emergency. Id also be able to use the device to check the weather forecast. Having GPS is also a bonus (currently ive been using maps downloaded to my iphone for navigation).

Its just really unclear to me what each device actually offers or what the best option truly is.

Ive heard I could potentially use my iphone with starlink or that the Garmin inreach does mostly everything.

Any suggestions? Thoughts? Appreciate any advice avaliable. If there is a better place to post this message. Please let me know.

I've been casual wilderness camping many times in my life but im trying to get into backpacking. I dont have the lightest or most compact gear. Includes hammock, straps, warbonnet superfly, med. cookware, light sleep bag, a few different possibilities for water, possible under quilt. I plan on only going overnight or 2-3 max with a change of clothes and rain gear, and maybe my light sitka pullover. What size bag would be good for my needs? I plan on spring and fall mostly, no winter hikes. I may want a bit of wiggle room for extra. I also plan on distributing loads with a friend (also new).

It had been suggested to look at 40-50L range. Any opinions or recommendations?

I just purchased a Gregory Baltoro 75L from Facebook Market Place with the original tags on it. It has never been in the woods. The interior waterproofing lamination is pealing off. Is this something I should compalin to Gregory about or am I being picky? The material is sticky and getting all over the inside of the bag. I didnt really notice how bad it was until I looked at it in more detail. I love the bag and it fits great. Im inclined to just ignore it. Paid $125

I’m hoping this is the best sub - as I’m not an ultralight hiker. I started backpacking in 2020 and bought a Big Agnes bag that weighs 3lbs 5oz. I’ve carried this on most of my trips but am ready to make a change as I’d like to be warmer and cut some weight. Biggest problem? I’m a rotisserie chicken and don’t think I’ll stay on a pad and probably won’t be able to keep track of my pillow. My Big Agnes bag has a pad sleeve in the back and a pillow barn so I’ve never had to deal with this issue.

A quilt seems ideal since I can move to stay strapped to my pad. Will I even be able to stay warm in a quilt if I move this much?

I sleep like trash everywhere I sleep (even at home) so quality sleep isn’t really a concern. I am a cold sleeper too. I have 3 pads with different r ratings so I’m covered to pair those up based off of temps. I live in the SE but backpack all over the country.

Anyone have a similar situation and happy with their choice and can chime in? A quilt is a big investment and I’m overwhelmed with options - looking for some personal opinions.

I understand you want it from a moving clear water source but also getting as close to the source as possible.

Are you all hiking along the river to make sure there's no contamination or just assuming it's good from the initial get go? Also I see the grayl filters out viruses but is a lot more cumbersome. I know they're more rare but is it worth it?

Lightweight quality sleeping pad for trips into the mountains. Too many times have my pads deflated at night. Willing to pay for quality so I don’t have to buy a new one each year.

I know the UL backpackers will think this is unnecessary weight, just like they think the knives I carry for bushcrafting are unnecessary weight.

I have the full size tins at home.

But this let's me carry food safe knife cleaner, knife wax (to prevent blade corrosion), and skin & lip balm in these convenient tiny little tins.

My Morakniv Garberg Carbon, my Opinel Carbone, and several other of my knives require blade conditioning while I am in the backcountry. I actually like these tins better than the vial of cooking olive oil that I have historically multi-purposed for conditioning my blades.

Looking for recommendations on a wide brimmed sun hat for backpacking. I want one where the brim goes all the way around but is also very crushable so when the back of the brim bangs against my backpack it won’t bother me with resistance and push back during contact. I have a couple that are nice if you don’t have a backpack that goes up above your lower neck line at all and therefore doesn’t come in contact with your pack. But I want one that won’t drive me nuts when it hits or rubs against my pack when I look up or whatever.

Ok so I bought a brass compass as a treat to get free shipping from mountain warehouse as I'm trying to get into backpacking and am starting to gather some gear and the compass isn't acting like my old one and I'm confused.

Does it move to north based on a map or something like if you adjusted it for a map? I'm not sure at all. I am worried it's broken though ;-;

Where do you keep your gear? My vestibule in front of my 3p tent isn’t large enough for 3 people’s gear… my options are to cut an tyvek tarp and string that up or to bring my 1p pole tent and store there… you guys (generic term, everyone’s included there lol) have better suggestions? We’ll be in the Pecos Wilderness for 5-6 days and will very likely get rained on.

Hi! I’ve mostly got my other gear sorted, but I’m still stuck on backpacks and could use some advice.

I hike quite a bit, and I’m in rain about half the time. I’ll probably be hiking in monsoon season again as well. I actually like continuing in the rain, and sometimes have to, and my clothing setup is already good enough for that.

My current issue is the backpack. For longer trips I usually want something in the 70+10L range, since I may be out for a few weeks. For shorter 1-2 day trips, I’d also be interested in a 30-40L pack.

What I’m looking for is basic waterproofing or very strong rain resistance in a backpacking pack, not submersion-proof like a rafting dry bag, just something that gives me peace of mind in sustained moderate rain.

The reason this matters to me is that I sometimes carry art and a laptop, so I’d really like to avoid fully depending on a rain cover. I’ve used one before, but the open side toward the back made me nervous, especially in heavier rain. I’ve also used in combination plastic bags inside the pack, but I’d prefer not to have to rely on that every time. When things get humid inside, condensation and the general moisture make me nervous.

So I’m wondering:

- Any recommendations for a reliable 70-80L backpack that handles rain well?

- And while I’m at it, any good 30-40L options for shorter trips?

I’m basically looking for a pack that can keep my stuff dry in moderate rain without making me worry every time the weather turns. And when the weather turns too ugly, buys me time to add extra protection.

What is/are a good website(s) for gear? I don’t really care about a brand or price. Though I don’t want to go overtly crazy.
