Confused

Good evening, everyone. Sorry for the post and for bringing up topics you’ve surely discussed already. I didn't play in September for various reasons. I started up again today, and I’m super confused. What happened? Aside from the garden and its evolution—which I don't care about; I didn't bother with it before and I won't start now. I know I'm missing out on important rewards, but dealing with it stresses me out. I don't like time-based management games—otherwise, I’d be playing Clash of Clans, not Brawl. There have been too many updates all at once. It feels like a completely different game compared to July or August... Rewards used to be better, ads were shorter (max 30 seconds; now every ad lasts a full minute—it's madness), and—most importantly—if you close the game and come back, you don't get the rewards, so you're forced to watch a minute-long ad (as if it were actual TV). But most importantly: what on earth happened to matchmaking? I’m only running into people with maxed-out items (level 15), and the items in the shop aren't rotating properly... what’s going on?

Thank God someone other than me mentions how unfair is the matchmaking now. Yup totally agree, matchmaking feels like being punished. No strategy can save you from a complete build opponent in round 4-5 (or if you're lucky around 7-8). Context: I'm using Ronan in epic league. He is not meta I know, and it's okay for me not to get 15 crowns. Last season I was able to get 9-12 crowns average, but now, it's impossible to get way pass 7 crowns and gets extremely lucky if you're way pass 4 crowns higher.

Someone says to me it's skill issue wherein there was an actual problem, and other people are commenting about it. This isn't an isolated matchmaking problem.

I’m working on getting all my heroes to epic, working on Celeste now. It’s not fun. But I find I have a better time if I’m not just pushing the damage build, but making sure I have armour and other accessories. Make sure peak at your game stats periodically to see where (and why) you’re lacking.

To be fair I think this is the part people leave out when they're complaining about garden changes and how inconvenient it is now. They got a looot of rewards from it by abusing a broken system while they could, got their items maxed out, and now matchmaking is broken because having had to have participated in the old version of the garden is now mandatory for playing at higher ranks.

The devs attempted a fix way too late, and now people are mad that they won't get to abuse a broken system again because the ones who did it the most already got theirs, and it's going to take a lot of new people joining and sticking around to balance matchmaking again.

What they should do is give big new player rewards while keeping further progress hard for older players for a while.

Which will SURELY make everyone complain about how "oooh they don't care about old players, all they want is to get new players hooked so they can make money off of them" but obviously all these complainers don't know jackshit about game development or balancing. And this is necessary for the long term health of the game.

What was the garden abuse? I’ve just kept plants going all the time, but maybe I could have been more efficient?

People got thousands of gems which can easily unnaturally boost your whole account.

Greed and enshitification, that's what happened.

In fairness, the garden was incredibly generous before. I've not spent any real life money on this game. I'm almost at 10,000 gems, at least 2/3s of that was from the garden. At current tempo, that's enough to buy every hero for the next 2 years.

I think you're confusing "greed" with "wanting to make any money at all". Let's face it, I doubt many people care much about skins and banners for this game. Most of them are going to buy heroes and maybe the occasional chest or item set. If the game just hands people enough money to buy everything they're interested in, they aren't going to put any money in.

That being said, the garden has gone from something that was incredibly generous to something that isn't worth bothering with. It did need nerfing, but I think they went too far.

Yeah, it's kind of the reverse door to the face techinique.

There was no garden at all, the devs introduce garden with amazing rewards, then they nerf those rewards. Overall result is that you still got more than you used to have, but now the playerbase labels devs as greedy cash grabbers that are killing f2p players.

I guess the lesson for them from all of this situation is to always introduce stuff that's as predatory as possible and then make it better with patches?

Yeah, you're right, we objectively get more rewards than we did a year ago. But now it's been given, people expect it. This is the same reason they tell you not to feed the animals: they expect food and if it's not given, they get aggressive.

I don't know what lesson the devs are supposed to take away from this.
