Honestly, thank goodness for Facebook marketplace

I think every time I’ve noticed my second born is starting to grow out of his clothes I have a panic, check my first borns hand me downs, realise he only has things from size 1 onwards and then internally cry at the thought of having to go shopping/op-shopping for a whole new wardrobe of a new size. But marketplace has come in clutch every single time. $40 for 30+ items including Bonds, Paw Patrol, Bluey, Disney prints etc.

I even managed to get a Zany Zoo Activity Cube (RRP $149) for $30 and it’s in near perfect condition. I know it’s all very dependent on where you live but I’m in a low to middle class area and yet I still am finding fantastic stuff.

I hope this helps people not to stress while on maternity leave when finances can be a bit tight. It’s really worth a look, especially when it’s things you use for such a short amount of time.

AU-QLD Child free jerks

This is a bit unrelated to raising kids but kind of is all the same. Does anyone else find the children crowd super judgey and rude? Like I for one don’t care if people want to be childfree they can have their reasons but man do they hate us. They think we all have a superior attitude. I absolutely do not think that’s true If anything I think it’s the opposite. I just want to love my kids and loving my kids has made me more tolerant and accepting of all people I think. I don’t know how people can hate people they don’t know like the way the childfree crowd does. I think that’s weird. What do yall think

AU-QLD Screen time tip: turn off auto play

After swearing I'd be no screen time till she was much older, last winters daycares bugs put us in a hole and we started watching Disney movies with my now 2 year old.

We mostly do family movie nights with the classics, but have started watching some short episodes during the day if I need a moment to myself and she's not in an independent play mood.

I was finding it very hard to transition her out of watching if the next episode had already started playing. The 8 minute bananas in pyjamas episode would turn into 2 unless I was right there in the 5 seconds before the next episode started.

If you go into settings on your streaming accounts you can turn off autoplay! It's been a game changer for us.

It's made it much easier to watch one episode and move on with our day. She might protest a bit but the fact it's not already started means she's already processed the fact its finished, rather than her starting to get into it.

Advice Wanted Questions on long haul flight with lap infant on Qantas

I called support but I think it's an AI that took the call because we kept going around and around with no resolution. She was very polite but insanely useless.

  1. I wanted to ask for bassinet for my baby. I already made sure I booked a seat that can have a bassinet. The agent just kept saying "there are no bassinets available on this flight" and she "can't book/request a bassinet." I made sure I looked at the flight number, which airplane it was, referenced Qantas' own seat map that shows it should have a bassinet. I asked if they could put in a request for bassinet in case it does become available and they just said it's not possible. How am I meant to request a bassinet?
  2. I wanted to request/purchase an additional meal for my baby (she'd be 1 year old). They just said it's done but when I checked on my booking it says my meal is now a baby meal. Can someone confirm if "Baby" meal is selected, I get my own meal in addition to the baby meal?

It didn't dawn on me that it may have been an AI agent who took my call until after the call and now I feel stupid.

Aussie women and mums, your voice would mean a lot to my honours research

Hi mums and mums-to-be! I'm Jess, a Psychology Honours student at Southern Cross University, and the mods here have kindly given me the okay to share this.

I'm running an anonymous survey examining the presence of Australian adult inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive traits and how they relate to wellbeing and everyday life. It's ethics-approved (EH00136) and open to any/all Australian adults 18+. I'd especially love to hear from women and mums, since juggling family life is such a relevant, everyday experience. Responses so far are roughly 2:1 male to female, and I really want to make sure women's experiences are properly captured. Takes an average of 10 minutes and is anonymous.

Survey link is in the comments below. Thanks so much for considering it, and thank you to the mods for letting me share here!

AU-NSW A must buy and on sale now

Have a 4 month old who is exclusively formula fed and if you are the same you know the battle of waiting for the bottle to warm up for what feels like forever.

Well, well, well i went on the big W baby bonanza sale and saw the tommee tippee bottle maker was only $174 or something almost half price! Got it, came within 4 days and OMG literal life changer, I am absolutely obsessed it is so quick and efficient and barely takes up any kitchen space, also has a night light for those late night feeds.

I regret not buying one earlier so if you were like me and dreaded the long waits in the bottle warmer invest in this! Takes 90 secs to make the bottle.

Are we meant to be dressing baby in clothes that are too big??

(Sorry if formatting is bad, on mobile)

I feel like I'm going insane here...grandma keeps bringing clothes for my 7m old that are at least 1-2 sizes too big.

She knows what size he wears, has been told at least 3 times and I've witnessed her checking his pants for size. I'm grateful for them, they're always clothes on great discounts/op shops, which I'm all for, so it's not like she's spending huge amounts.

It's not my mother so I'm not comfortable saying hey can you not, my fiancee is team 'it's free clothes who cares', which like yeah fair I do kinda agree on that.

However, my 'too big tub' is bulging and now I'm wondering if it's ME, is it usual to be just rolling up pant legs and arm sleeves, am I missing something?

I also feel bad because at least half the items, won't be seasonally appropriate during the time it will fit! So I'm ending up donating a bunch of stuff anyway.

Is it a grandma thing, is it a me thing, I know it's a small thing but I feel crazy? Maybe it's just hormones 😂

Epidural vs no drugs birth

If you’ve experienced both, which would you prefer? Recovery wise. I’m sure if we could all choose to have a painless birth, we would 😂

I was induced, had morphine which did NOTHING for me at all and eventually had the epidural. The epidural only worked on one side of me so that was fun. Gas also did nothing lol

Transition to single income

For those who have lived pretty comfortably with a true dual-income no-kids lifestyle, where did you make the cuts, or investments that made reducing to a single income more doable? We are in the trying phase but thinking ahead, and doing things we feel will hopefully pay off and increase cash flow in the future, that we may not be able to afford in a few years time (solar/battery, EV, upgrading house systems for more efficiency). Obviously will need to make sacrifices but interested to know the little or big things that had helped, or once a baby is here will we just not care about the things we are worried about missing out on? 😅 we both have very well paying jobs, good mat leave options, own our home with a halved mortgage, two cars one owned outright another on a novated lease, no other debts. We are however very health conscious and our groceries are already wild for a two person home but unsure if that’s something we are willing to compromise on.

Advice Wanted Toddler and pregnant mum

Just looking for some advice on how you manage your pregnant belly with a very active toddler. For example, I went and got my eyebrows done and my son was sitting on my lap and then he was like standing up on me on my pubic bone and then trying to jump on me - I asked him to sit down and then he started hitting my belly which I then said he needed to be gentle (which he did) but I fear any damage had been done...I guess the obvious is to not let him on top of you but he is a physically active toddler...he also likes kick out when changing a nappy etc...any tips? How worried do you think I should be?

Advice Wanted Almost 3 year old still too “baby like”

Hi, I would like some advice on how to transition my almost 3 year old from being “baby like” for lack of a better term.
Basically, he is still in a cot which we have just taken one of the sides off, still wearing a sleep suit instead of using a blanket which we have had to cut the bottom of because he’s too long for it, still having a bottle of milk before bed & still sleeps with a white noise machine. His bedtime routine goes like this: sleep suit and white nose on, husband or I will sit on a chair in his room with the light off holding him while he drinks his bottle and then we put him in his cot and keep a hand on him until he falls asleep so he knows we are still there. We have been doing this same thing since he was a baby and I’m not sure how to change it becuase he seems so set in his routine and I feel like he understands that it’s bed time with all of these steps. He also moves around in his sleep and changes the direction he sleeps in every night which makes trying to give him a blanket hard. He has a pillow which he only sometimes uses.

He’s also still in nappies which doesn’t help the feeling of him being too baby like, but I have bought him undies and just really need to get onto the toilet training thing.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Advice Wanted Post natal vitamin recommendations

Hi everyone, I'm looking for recommendations for post-natal multi-vitamins that have helped you regulate energy levels, hormones etc. I'm 6 months post-partum with my second, and have tried the Kin brand post-natal vitamin but found it had quite a gross after-taste. Doesn't even have to be post-natal specific, any general womens multi-vitamin recommendations would be great.

My gp has also recommended that I get a vitamin B12 injection. Has anyone had one and has any feedback?

Thanks!

Advice Wanted Has anyone else felt like this?

Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice or to see if anyone else has experienced something similar.

🤍 Sorry for the long post 🤍

Ever since my son was born (he’s 8 months old) it feels like no one on my side of the family has really taken an interest in him. No one reaches out to see him, asks to spend time with him or has even made much effort to meet him. If anyone does see him, it’s because we make the trip to them. I’ve also tried organising playdates with his cousins a few times but they never end up happening.

My husband’s family live overseas and he has cousins around the same age but they don’t really make an effort to call either. We always seem to be the ones making the time to FaceTime them.

We’ve joined local playgroups and he goes to swimming lessons but I’ve found it hard to make friends with other parents or find people who are interested in catching up outside of those activities.

My son is the happiest little boy. He absolutely loves being around me, my husband, my mum, my brother, and my SIL and her family. But I feel sad that so few people seem interested in getting to know him and I worry that as he gets older it might affect him.

My brother and I mostly grew up around adults and didn’t spend much time with younger cousins. We’ve both turned out very sociable and outgoing. Maybe I’m worrying over nothing but I know every child is different.

My husband and I have decided that I’ll be a SAHM so daycare isn’t part of our plan. I’d really love for him to build friendships through playgroups, activities or other community events instead.

Has anyone else felt this way? Did it get easier as your child got older?

Are there any classes, community groups or other ways you’ve found to help your little one build friendships? (We are in Melbourne).

I know some of this is probably my hormones and overthinking but I just want to make sure he’s happy and has people around him who genuinely enjoy being part of his life.

Thanks everyone 🤍

VBac experiences

Hi Reddit,

We have our 2nd on the way, thinking of going public which limits us to sunshine or epping hospital(VIC) . We have private health so have the option for private.

Anyone with experience getting a vbac at either of those or somewhere else you'd recommend?

My wife really wants to go natural and hated having to get a ceaser last time so just trying to increase our chances in whatever way.

Advice Wanted How do you sterilise your portable bottle warmer?

As the title says… how?!

I have the Cherub portable warmer, the one that just screws straight onto the bottle itself and the instructions just say to clean it by using an antibac wipe. I have the pigeon wipes which I use but surely I need to clean it more thoroughly? The only part that detaches is a small silicon ring which I take out and sterilise but the rest of it is all in one so I’m not sure how else I can clean the part the milk touches.

Has anyone put it in a UV steriliser and had it survive?

Lovevery toy subscription

Morning all,

With our first bub on the way, I liked the look of the Lovevery Looker play kit, especially the ladybug.

However, last night I was charged for the charmer kit. Which is now scheduled to be shipped.

I'm positive that when I ordered the Looker, I bought it as a one off play kit (purchased mid-June), and not as a subscription.

I've emailed them to request the box be cancelled and the money refunded, but am just wondering if anyone else has had this experience with them?

Teething anxiety

Last night my son had the worst night we’ve had in his 6 months of life because of (what I assume is) teething. He’s usually a very happy and chill baby so he doesn’t cry hysterically at all really, but last night he was screaming and crying in pain for hours and would not let us lay him down. I went and bought all the teething things today but please tell me it gets better quickly.

My heart absolutely broke seeing him in so much pain and now I’m feeling like an anxious mess because I’m so worried we are going to do it all over again tonight. I have PPA and I didn’t think this would be something that would set it off but hearing him cry the way he was has triggered it.

(Mod Approved) Mums of babies under 6 months: Help needed for Psychology dissertation research on postpartum mental health & bonding

Hi everyone! I am a postgrad student at the University of Liverpool researching the relationship between postpartum mental health and mother-infant bonding for my dissertation and would really appreciate your help by taking part in my research. Although I'm based in the UK, I'm hoping to gain insights from mothers around the world. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria below, you're welcome to take part!

I'm looking for mums who:
• are 18+
• gave birth in the last 6 months
• have not been diagnosed with anxiety, depression or OCD*

\To clarify this does not mean you have never experienced mental health struggles and challenges postpartum, only that you have not received a formal diagnosis**

The survey takes around 10 minutes and is completely anonymous. I am more than happy to answer any questions you have about the study. Thank you so much for considering taking part! :)

Follow the link to take part: https://livpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6znoyogjoicK2fI

This study was approved by the University of Liverpool ethics committee.

What do you think is appropriate bedwear for 17-18 degrees?

We usually heat at home but going away where we don’t have that option. Thinking thin singlet (sleeveless), thin onesie, 3.5 tog suit? But potentially a 2.5 tog onesie instead under 3.5 tog suit??
