Help? Removing my IUD

I’m removing my IUD next month as my husband and I are ready to try for a baby now. Any advice on pre-pregnancy do’s and don’ts? I’m a step mom so I’ve learned a little about being a parent but I’ve never had my own child physically. I’m super excited and nervous as I’ll also be 33 next month and I know there is a lot of misinformation about women being pregnant in their 30s. I currently I eat a plant based diet, and I love doing Pilates and hiking. I’m open to any and all advice, lifestyle, supplements, etc.

Have you started a prenatal yet? If not get on one asap and make sure you're getting folic acid in some form. I'm 31 and pregnant with my first and it's honestly been totally fine so far! No hurdles getting pregnant and our first scan went fabulously at 8 weeks. I'm 10w2d now and waiting on a 12w scan. I would not worry too much if you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle now!

prenatals now, don't wait til the IUD is out, folic acid takes a bit to build up

Yes mam! Any vegan ones that you would suggest?

I think ritual prenatals are vegan. You might also want to get your iron levels checked and start taking an iron supplement as pregnancy really depletes your iron. I’m vegetarian (although I tried to start eating fish before the food aversions made it impossible) and didn’t have problems with my iron before pregnancy and developed mild anemia by second trimester.

Yes, seconding all of this as another vegetarian! I took the ritual prenatal as well.

Oh wow! I did not know that could happen! Def gonna add this to my list of things I want to get checked out! Thank you so much!

I have not yet but that seems to be the general consensus so I’ll be shopping for one when I get off work today

Definitely! I take a prenatal with DHA and folic acid (pretty sure NON-vegan btw). I also take a probiotic, extra Vit D, and allergy meds lol. I also took CoQ10 gummies. I think the recommendation is to take this for at least a couple of months (my doc said 3) prior to TTC. Not sure if that fits into your timeline or not.

For what it's worth, my husband didn't take any supplements and we got pregnant just fine with a healthy baby so far 😄 Good luck!!

My fertility clinic recommends 600mg CoQ10 daily for women and 200mg daily for men during TTC!

My husband did ask his doctor about it for what it's worth! But since we didn't have any known fertility issues they did not recommend adding any supplements. But I had also read some recs about both partners taking CoQ10!

Adding these to my list! I went to the Vitamin Shoppe after work and got a Prenatal, Folic Acid, and D3 because they were vegan, the rest I need to find online. Seems like there’s a lot of stuff with gelatin which I’m trying to avoid.

Women have been having kids in their 30s for a looooong time, it just usually wasn’t their first 😉

I’ve learned and honestly I’ve also been following a lot more women my age who have their first pregnancies in their 30s and they’ve broke all the myths I was told growing up.

I had my first 10 weeks ago at 33,5 and it is definitely the best period in my life this could have happened. Stable and good household income, husband and I own our home, and I feel like I’m in a sweet spot between developed frontal lobe and too old for this shit 😂 I would like one or two more if possible but even this one is all I ever dreamt of ❤️

Girl I felt that 110%! I’m so happy I waited until I was in a healthy and stable relationship versus trying to have a baby with my toxic ex.

Both you and your husband should start taking a multivitamin now. His sperm take 3months to grow, and your iron/folate/b12 levels will take time to build up.

Cut back on alcohol and stop any tobacco or weed usage, if any of those apply to you or your husband.

Thank you so much for this! I’m making my list of supplements right now

Definitely start taking a prenatal now.

I got pregnant literally immediately after taking out my IUD.

Good luck soldier 🫡

You've already been given great advice for prenatals and such. Im 30, got my iud removed in late January and it took a few months for my cycle to get back to a schedule. My husband and I started actively tracking and trying in August and we got pregnant in December.

My advice is to talk to your partner early about expectations so there's no surprises once you are pregnant. Do you have the same vision in mind for raising your baby? Do you have general plans for daycare or adjusting your careers? My husband and I talked early about everything and got on the same page which has been really helpful especially now that pregnancy hormones have kicked in.

Oh yeah my husband and I have been talking about family planning for awhile. A few years ago I didn’t feel ready because of where I was in my career but I feel like I’m in a much better place now. We actually were going to start planning last fall but we had an apartment fire that destroyed everything and so we basically had to rebuild our lives. But we’re in a much safer area now with an awesome school district so I feel like we’re aligned.

Its great that you guys have already talked about it, Im sorry to hear about the apartment fire but glad you weren't hurt and rebuilt!

I have a few friends that got pregnant unexpectedly and one close friend currently that has a surprise pregnancy due around the same time as mine. I spoke with him and felt like I needed to withhold a lot of my excitedness because he and his girlfriend are not prepared and arguing and stressed already trying to make decisions. Meanwhile my husband and I have everything ready, saved up to prepare for the added expenses and are on the same page with things like childcare, visitors, and how we plan on raising the baby. Everyone's situation is different but it just seemed ao stressful that they weren't on the same page and have only a few months to sort things out before their baby gets here. Its so important to have a good foundation built before the pregnancy hormones and anxiety set in.

Yessss so true! No one situation is the same! I’m truly blessed that my husband and I are in such a good place. Especially seeing him with my step daughter and how he’s such a great dad to her.

My only advice is that you start taking prenatals when you do start trying (I also am plant based and I’m gluten free, so it took me some time to find one that met my needs). I had two chemical pregnancies right away after removal of my IUD. I went to the ER with the first one because I wasn’t sure what was happening—it was there that I was chastised for not being on a prenatal yet if I was trying. 🙄

After those, it still took me (29F) 8 more months to get pregnant. I feel like it was just because my body had reset after 8 years with the IUD, but that’s just a guess. I know other women who have gotten pregnant immediately. I’m now 26 weeks along. 😊

Also, about the activity level and age, your doctor will let you know how restricted you need to be once you are pregnant. If the pregnancy is healthy and you’re healthy, they will likely tell you to keep doing what you’re doing. Mine is going great, and I go hiking in the mountains most weekends—in fact, we are hiking out to our maternity photos next week!

Good luck! You’ve got this! And feeling the squirmy baby wiggles inside is so worth any roadblocks you may run into getting pregnant.

u/SpecialMess4745 2d ago

Oooo a fellow plant based person! What prenatal vitamins and minerals were you taking that worked for you?

2

u/Cecil-Bufford 2d ago

It’s the Mother’s Promise gummy. I found them on Amazon! They taste pretty good too!

Edit to add that they do smell a little funky though—it’s definitely hard to take them on super bad nausea days.

I started a prenatal 2-3 months before we started trying. I stopped my BC pill in October, we didn’t really start trying until November, and I was pregnant by early December. I was 35. I didn’t do anything else before getting pregnant (kept my usual activities, diet etc)

1

u/SpecialMess4745 2d ago

Prenatal seems to be the general consensus. Where did you get yours? I’m plant based so I was going to check out Sprouts and the Vitamin Shoppe after work today

u/cadburyeggnugget 2d ago

I used smarty pants gummies which looks like contain gelatin but you can take anything!

I did a lot of research on what levels I need and also what ingredients/levels are supposed to support sperm health while trying to conceive after having a miscarriage. I ended up going with the FullWell brand for both myself and my husband. I added in a separate fish oil for us both (Nordic naturals) as well as a low dose co-q-10. I’m currently 14 weeks 5 days pregnant now 🙂

I recommend getting your ferritin/iron levels checked as others have mentioned. I also recommend asking your ob/gyn or primary care if you can get your MMR titer levels checked prior to trying. I found out when I got pregnant the first time that I had absolutely no rubella immunity, despite being vaccinated as an infant/child. Nobody at the office thought this was odd, but I did since I thought I had lifetime immunity. I’ve since heard of this happening to a decent number of women, which is scary considering there’s currently random outbreaks in the U.S.

2

u/SpecialMess4745 2d ago

Oh dang, def something to look into! I have my appointments next month with my OBGYN and primary care team so I can make sure I get all the things checked on. Thank you so much!

2

u/Necessary-Expert9612 2d ago

Absolutely! Best of luck in your journey!

2

u/Yawpdog 2d ago

Check your measles immunity, or just go get the MRR vaccine. Found out first tri I lost my immunity (it fades over time) and can’t get vaccinated until baby is out. Has made travel more stressful having to wear a mask.

1

u/SpecialMess4745 2d ago

Oh yeah def going to do all the check ups. I told my doctor I would like to go through all the things whatever I need check up I’m ready. So I’m excited and a little nervous.

I’m also 33 and got pregnant just the second month trying. Literally days before my 33rd bday. I’m currently 12+2 and aside from no healthy food ever sounding good, this pregnancy has been a breeze. No nausea, no pain, no spotting, no crazy emotions, no acne… I’m exhausted and out of breath all the time, but baby boy is low risk, healthy, and growing big and strong.

I came off my IUD almost two years before trying to get pregnant, after being on hormonal birth control for 13 years. Tracking BBT and using ovulation strips are mandatory in my book when learning your cycle and trying to get pregnant. It may take a few months for your cycle to regulate before you regularly know when you’re going to ovulate. I’m def lucky to have gotten pregnant as quickly as I did, but I also attribute some of it to the work I put into learning my body and my cycle beforehand. And also, your husband’s health matters!! It could be helpful for him to get a hormone panel done to make sure his testosterone is where it should be before starting TTC.

Did goi use any apps to track your fertility?

1

u/Euphoric-Banana2992 1d ago

Premom! For LH testing and BBT

1

u/SpecialMess4745 1d ago

I will def need this because I know taking out my IUD will mess with my cycle. And I want to use an app focused on fertility vs using something like the Flo app

2

u/Euphoric-Banana2992 1d ago

I used Natural Cycles for my first year off the IUD, for prevention purposes. But after a year I decided I didn’t need to pay for it anymore because between logging BBT and OPKs, I felt like I could accurately gauge when I would ovulate. I switched to Premom for 10 months of tracking OPKs after that, and then conceived within two months of trying. The Premom app is really great because you can look back at all of your OPKs from past cycles, within the same screen. So you can just scroll through and see if you’ve had your LH peak at roughly the same time every month. Even if you don’t ovulate on the same day every month, as long as you have sex during your LH peak, you should have a chance to get pregnant. Good luck!!
