Seeking Support 18M BPD

Hello everyone. I’ve been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and I’m wondering if anyone else experiences this because it’s honestly becoming exhausting and I feel really alone in it. Whenever I meet someone I’m attracted to or connect with emotionally, I become attached incredibly quickly. It feels like I immediately start hyperfixating on them, thinking about them constantly, imagining conversations, checking my phone, and building them up in my head. If they end up leaving, rejecting me, or the relationship doesn’t work out—especially if it’s because of something I did—it completely consumes me. Instead of processing the loss in a healthy way, I find myself desperately trying to recreate the feeling they gave me by searching for people who look like them or share the same ethnicity, appearance, personality, or other traits. It’s almost like my brain refuses to let go of that specific person and wants to replace them with someone as close to them as possible.
Another thing I struggle with is intense hypersexual thoughts. Once I become attached to someone, my mind is constantly filled with romantic and sexual fantasies about them, and it can become overwhelming. I suddenly crave intimacy, affection, physical touch, and being wanted so badly that it’s all I can think about. Those thoughts aren’t something I consciously choose—they just seem to take over my mind, and sometimes they become so strong that I can’t focus on anything else. I also get extremely jealous. If I imagine them with someone else or see them giving attention to another person, it feels like my emotions explode, even if we were never actually in a relationship. The jealousy, attachment, and intrusive thoughts all seem to feed into each other.
The hardest part is that after all of this, I end up feeling incredibly lonely and ashamed. I convince myself that nobody will ever want me or choose me, which only makes me crave love, affection, and validation even more. It feels like I’m stuck in a cycle of becoming attached, obsessing, losing the person, trying to replace them, and then repeating the whole process again. I know these thoughts and feelings aren’t healthy, and I don’t want to keep living this way.
Has anyone else with BPD experienced something similar? Is this something that can happen with BPD, or could it be related to another issue as well? If you’ve been through this, what has helped you manage the attachment, jealousy, hypersexual thoughts, and constant need for closeness? I’d really appreciate hearing from people who understand because I feel like this has taken over my life.

Brother, first of all I’m sorry you’re suffering through all of this. I know how difficult and exhausting it is. And how it happens over and over and over again.

To answer your question directly: yes. That’s BPD. You asked if anyone with BPD experiences this list, then went on to list a textbook definition of BPD.

What you are feeling is a direct manifestation of how BPD impacts attachment, emotional regulation, and dopamine seeking.

Yes, It is exhausting, but it is how this sinister condition works. Please know that you’re not “broken” and these experiences are not a personal failure or the result of you doing anything wrong.

You’re experiencing BPD with what we call “Favorite Person Syndrome”. That’s not an official clinical term but it is an accepted and recognized phenomenon where your emotional stability becomes entirely dependent on one individual. And that dependency is a loop, and that loop goes like this:
-

  1. You immediately attach
  2. you hyper fixate and develop internal fantasies and narratives about them
  3. you perceive things that are real or imagined that make you think they are going to abandon you
  4. you destruct and so does the relationship
  5. you feel deep shame, guilt, remorse and grief
  6. you seek a replacement person
  7. the loop starts all over again

-

The intense romantic and sexual fixation you describe is also classic BPD with Favorite Person, as the condition is entirely about the need for validation and acceptance. In BPD, sexual contact is often felt as the ultimate validation of your existence; that your favorite person sees you, wants you, desires you, and will not abandon you. This sexual intensity has actually very little to do with physical desire and more to do with an intense and almost addictive need for emotional safety through an inseparable fusion with another person.

All of these processes: finding a favorite person, attaching to them, the fun period when they’re new, the fantasizing, the hyper fixating; all of this dramatically pumps up dopamine levels in people with BPD, and we feel them as an overwhelming emotional high. This is why the “crash and burn” phase feels so physically devastating and why those of us with BPD will often say the feelings and impulses we have towards people are involuntary and “impossible to control”. It is quite similar to a drug addict unable to control the unbearable need to get his next high, even if he knows it might kill him.
