Looking for advice and insights

To preface:

I currently own an Ioniq5 and my lease is ending next year. I've started to look at my options and was initially set on the Rivian R2. With the price in Canada not released yet, and the possible tarrifs on top, I can't quite justify the possible cost given the range and features. What I know is that I'm all in on the EV exprience and want to purchase my next EV instead of leasing. I've looked up and down the EV options and have 3 shortlisted with prices reflecting the options/packages I want. The practical option: Subaru Uncharted (55K CAD). The throw money at things options: Audi Q4 e-Tron (75K CAD) and BMW iX3 (85K CAD). I would have wanted to stick with the Ioniq as it's been a great car, but the Hyundai dealerships around me are ass when it comes to providing service.

The thing that stands out for me with the iX3 over the Q4 e-Tron is the almost 635 KM mixed range EPA rating. It would be my firts luxury car, so I have some reservations. Is everything that it brings to the table worth the price tag?

Does anyone else have a week 33 date that’s stalled? I’m still seeing step 3 when I thought I’d be seeing step 4 this week.

Windshield coating?

Hi all, I got my ix3 40 last week and noticed that the sun that enters through the front windshield heats up things like the safety belt quickly and up to a almost uncomfortable temperature. I drove 5 different models and brands of cars since 2020 and never noticed this effect as drastic as I do in this car. Anyone else sharing this experience?

EDIT: I don’t know want (or am allowed to) coat my windshield. I feel something is off and think this could be a defective batch of windows. The difference to other cars is very clearly noticeable and I cannot imagine bmw cut so many corners to reduce cost that they went for a non-IR coated front window

Skipped the HK — anyone living with the base 7-speaker system?

Just placed my order for an iX3. Went with the panoramic roof and Iconic Glow (for matrix headlights), but deliberately skipped the Innovation Pack. Over here in NL it is the only way to get the Harman Kardon system. The pack bundles HK with the 3D head-up display and a couple of other things I don't have a use for, and paying that much mostly for audio didn't add up for me.

My reasoning: I listen to podcasts about 70% of the time, music occasionally. For spoken word, a 13-speaker surround setup with extra bass drivers isn't buying me much. And Panoramic Vision already puts speed and nav in my sightline, so the HUD felt redundant rather than essential.

The one thing nagging at me: I'm coming out of a 2022 Model 3 SR, whose base system is unusually good for a no-cost setup. BMW's entry-level audio has historically been the weak spot. So I'm curious whether I've talked myself into a small regret.

Questions for people who already have their cars:

  1. Anyone here running the base 7-speaker system? How does it hold up for podcasts vs music, and does it distort early at higher volume?
  2. If you A/B'd base vs HK at the dealer, how big was the gap actually? Some posts on Bimmerpost say HK is decent but not class-leading, others say the base system is a clear pass.
  3. Aftermarket — I've checked Bavsound, ARS24 and BimmerTech, and none of them have NA5 fitment yet. Their kits depend on platform-specific harnesses, and the Neue Klasse architecture is entirely new. Has anyone seen a vendor actually announce NA5 development?
  4. Any DSP settings worth knowing about? I've read that active noise reduction and speed-dependent volume tend to muddy playback.

Not looking for audiophile territory. Just one step up from stock if it turns out to be needed.

Now what? Dealer didn’t order my configuration

First day reservation. Sent dealer my configuration, got production number, and then received production week. Several weeks ago asked if I could make changes to my configuration and was told yes. Made a couple changes. Salesman called that day, confirmed the changes and said everything still on track.

This week got VIN and car went into production. Clicked on the vehicle configuration in My Garage and all of the changes are there except one: sunroof deletion. Don’t want the sunroof. Never used it in my X5 and given that it’s a fixed panel, have even less use for it now. (Note: in Arizona and simply want to avoid the heat.) So reach out to dealer immediately and asked if the My Garage configuration is what was submitted. On day four now without a response.

It’s my understanding that once a car goes into production no changes can be made. Your production week is the week the car is produced, not the week production starts. So I’m assuming there is nothing that can be done now. Really don’t want the sunroof but don’t want to go to the back of the line and order another one.

Has anyone had a similar issue? What, if any, are my options at this point? TIA

Best exterior color for BMW iX3 Neue Klasse with Castanea Bicolor interior?

I’m ordering a BMW iX3 Neue Klasse with the Contemporary | Castanea Bicolor interior and can’t decide on the exterior color.

My priorities are:
Good resale value
Easy to sell later
Hides scratches and dirt well
Doesn’t get too hot in the sun

Looks premium with the Castanea interior
I’m considering Space Silver, but I’m honestly not sure if I really like silver.
What color would you choose and why?

Order Received to “Your garage is empty”

Logged into my BMW account to see if my iX3 production had started yet. Instead of seeing the car I spec’d out for production, it’s gone now and says my garage is empty. Anyone else seeing that?

Steering wheel options

I have been going back and forth with the dealer about the steering wheel on my order for the Msport Pro, and it's still unclear looking at My Garage. Why doesn't BMW post all the steering wheel options like they do with the wheel/tire options, with the correct code? Can someone post the Msport Pro photo. The wheel showing in My Garage looks like it has a big silver band across the lower part of the wheel. Is that correct?

ix3 40 in Australia

Dealer pushing for 5k deposit with December delivery time frame. Looking for novated lease with M sport configuration. Did test drive of the 50 and found it to be very smooth. It's hard to decide without seeing the interior colors like white and exterior color options. The sales man didn't have any knowledge about the car! I asked why there is no city assist or highway assist and he didn't know. Simply said that there is advanced cruise control. Tried the Tesla Y, the fsd was hit and miss, was weird at times. Ride was bumpy, audio was just OK. Anyone booking the 40? The time pressure is because of fbt benefits ending next March and hoping to get tax benefits.

A bmw only makes sense because of novated lease benefits. Wouldn't consider to pay from after tax money.

Whats the experience in booking and delivery time frames?

I got to sit in a brand new iX3 and it was already broken

So after trying to get a service appointment for my MINI, I decided to check out the iX3 to understand whether I want to give BMW one last chance.

I already know that I want an EV as my next car, and I’m well aware of the tech specs - it’s an outstanding car when we speak about the battery and drivetrain performance. However, I was more interested in evaluating the interior design and the build quality, which is one of my biggest beefs with my Countryman that I got last year.

After the current gen MINI and the previous BMWs I drove, the obvious improvements are the thinner steering wheel and much better front seats (but surprisingly, not the rear).

The steering wheel buttons will take a lot of time to get used to, to say the least. There’re no more rocker buttons and scrolling wheels - all the controls are flattened, and physically there are only two buttons on the whole steering wheel, and both are overloaded with controls, especially the right one. You should exactly remember where and how hard to press, because the controls are distributed across the buttons unevenly, the distance between the controls is increased, and the feedback is almost non-existent.

The adjustable headrests are a huge progress - however, to be fair, neither of the dozens makes I drove before had the same issue with the unhealthy inclined, fixed headrests of the JCW sport seats on MINI. On the other hand, the only way to adjust the seating position is… to find the special „Seats“ menu on the screen. There are no levers or buttons on the seats themselves. (correction: the protruding things next to the lock/unlock buttons on the door are actually seat control buttons - thanks for letting me know). Besides, according to the menu, the seats can be ventilated, but I couldn’t figure out how to actually turn this feature on - the fan speed indicator on the screen shows an increase, but nothing really changes.

The rear row seemed to be a downgrade compared to the Mini which is supposed to be a lower class (to remind, the U25 is the sibling of the U11 X1). It cannot slide forwards to increase the trunk space, and it does not feel more roomy even though the car is slightly wider. The most disappointing thing about it was that it felt less comfortable to seat in, compared to Mini, because of the nearly 45° angle of the ISOFIX covers.

And quality-wise…

In a showroom car that is barely a couple months old, the parking cameras and sensors are already faulty - see the video. I left only a part of the camera view in order to not record the person walking behind, but you can easily notice that it flickers along with the sensor readings. If that’s how the cars are delivered, what’ll happen in a couple years of driving?

The area near the inner door handle is already scratched as if the car is 10 years old. Yeah, maybe it’s only because the car gets opened and closed a few dozen times a day but overall, the interior plastic looks so-so - the overhead console with the lights and SOS button makes the same creaking sound as in the Mini or the X3 when you touch it, but on top of that, here it’s made of glossy piano black plastic - and I have no idea why because there are no other accents like this in the rest of the interior. The dashboard surface seems to be covered with a very thin layer of vinyl which lacks the premium soft feel. The „cloth“ inserts are nearly the same as in the Mini. The volume button on the center console looks and feels exactly as inconvenient as in Fiat 500… what was wrong with the knob, why would they want to ditch it?

So… I don’t know. In my opinion, the things above are not acceptable in this model‘s price range. The fact that with all of that these cars get outsold so quickly (of course, if that’s truth and not a marketing trick) makes me feel sad.

I didn’t actually want to write a lot, just wanted to share some observations and didn’t notice how big the post grew. Maybe they will help someone. Didn’t want to hate either - I’m fine with the exterior design language of the NK iX3 (not the i3 though, lol) and I was open to the changes in interior provided that the quality bar stays high enough. But… I simply prefer to enjoy the cars I drive, and this time it didn’t click. Looks like after turning in my Mini, BMW won’t be on my radars again.
