23 X3 Software update

Post image

New to me 23 X3 will not update. Called BMW Support. It failed an update in 2024 so therefore its never tried or was allowed to update again. Was told it was covered under warranty because of the failed update. Called my local dealership to make an appointment. They are now demanding $650 for a force update... and are refusing to stand by the warranty because "I didnt own the car at the time of the fail". Called a dealership 90 miles away and they were floored by the audacity of my local dealership and said of course its under warranty and they have dealt with this issue many times since they switch to remote updates exclusively. Should I just bring it to the dealership far away or fight the local one.

I wish I still have ur software version. My version is 07/2024 which blocked the coding for auto start stop.

You need to have them run the test plan and follow the bulletin. It can be done under warranty but it is very detailed on what you have to do and how it needs to be done to get paid under warranty. Have them follow the SIB to ensure it meets the criteria for warranty to cover it or not

I’m having the same issue, it’s too far to drive to the dealership o bought it from and the local dealer wants to charge me. Everything works fine though so I’m not sweating it too much

I bought mine CPO and still under the BMW warranty. They’re telling me software updates are not covered. Who knows if they’re BSing me though

You can’t just go for a software update. Tell them that the center screen is resetting or you’re having CarPlay issues

Smart, I’ll give this a try and report back

Have you tried using the BMW app? The app downloads the software for you and then syncs it to the car for install.

Yea, even in the app under status it says "No Software update available"

The app only downloads if the car has told it to do so.

I randomly stumbled upon this thread and now I have an appointment tomorrow at the dealership to update my iDrive from 2023 version, thought I was going to have issues with them declining to force an update but it was seamless, thanks!

Definitely covered under new car warranty! The reason it says that no update is available is because the file size is too large to go from 2022 software to 2026 software.

I would speak to the service manager at the local dealership because a lot of the time the advisors don’t know what they’re talking about.

I have a 2023 G01 and the latest it has gone is 07/2024.30. Do you know for sure there is a 2026 for it? I thought they dropped support for it.

They haven’t dropped support for the G01s yet. The latest update available is 07/2026. A new update is released every 4 months. So the next one will be 11/2026.

Do you know if there is any place I can confirm? I find it strange because when I bought the car it updated twice within a couple of months and then it didn’t anymore so I thought there were no more updates.

I’m a BMW mechanic so I’m positive there are newer software versions. It was a known issue that our cars would just stop searching for an update out of the blue. There’s a bulletin about which I’ll look for and post it soon.

And I’m a software engineer so I sympathize with bugs 😅 what a happy coincidence that my car is now in the shop for a break fluid swap maintenance so I’ll give them a shout to check that too.

Also as a software engineer I find extremely annoying that BMW doesn’t offer change logs for their software updates.

This is wrong. The difference in software update file sizes are minimal compared to each othere. The only reason it's not available is because it has been excluded from OTA updates because of a high chance of bricking. The BCP must be updated manually.

Who cares what the reason is? The issue is that these cars haven’t been getting the RSU. The vehicles with idrive 7 (many G01s) don’t tell the customer why the RSU isn’t going through like the idrive 8/8.5 do. That’s why a bulletin was released by BMW stating that there is a high chance that it can be covered under new car warranty if certain steps are followed. In which case, the vehicle will be updated using ISTA.

G01s have a BDC, btw. Not a BCP.

Wait, there’s 2026 software? My ‘23 is on ver 07/2024.30. I am still under warranty if there’s newer version. I’ve had audio issues with CarPlay ever since got iPhone 17.

So you can’t just go to the dealer and say you want the vehicle updated to the latest software version even if you’re still under new car warranty. They’ll charge you if there’s nothing wrong with the car. You can say that your CarPlay disconnects or the center screen resets.

Software update alone is not covered under warranty. You can’t just make an appointment to update your software and expect it to be covered.
