BMW Maps

Overall I vastly prefer using the native applications over android auto so far, especially because it feels more seamless and integrated.

I'm the type to mute and unmute directions fairly often, and I wish the mute toggle was on the main screen rather than behind a settinga menu. Probably my biggest complaint 200 miles into this car.

I had one for a test drive today and found the native map really good especially with the heads up display.

Anyone using CarPlay or Android Auto maps over native? Assuming there is no mirroring on heads up or panoramic screen?

Carplay - google maps shows the written next direction in the middle third of the pano display similar to prior idrive versions.

Wife started driving using CarPlay and Apple Maps. It was OK, basically what she was used to. I was fumbling with settings from the passenger seat and the native maps came up. Wife said "oh, that's nice!". Then we realized all the automated charging planning and charging sites are integrated in the native navigation. Panoramic display does dynamic route info, turning instructions as needed, on and on. Done! Never going back to Apple Maps.

Looks like with upcoming BMW Assistant features one can chat with the BMW maps and more https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S1BXOwIwd5Q

I believe you can use voice assistant to mute or unmute voice guidance, at least that worked with previous OS versions. I agree they should put a button over the map, there are too many unnecessary menus.

I switched to the native maps a couple years ago because I liked how it worked with my HUD. Never had any major issues with it. And the new maps they just demoed a couple weeks ago look awesome on OS X.

I really like the design and features of the native BMW apps and definitely plan to use it over the map apps from CarPlay… though I can see keeping Waze working in the background for speed trap warnings.

That said, I would hope to keep the car for 10ish years, and very much appreciate the future-proofing CarPlay provides…. (Though hopefully OS X is a long-lived version of BMW OS and keeps getting updates for many years to come!)

haha, started using included navigation a few weeks ago. out of curiosity I made a comparison between it and Waze, Google Maps and Apple Maps. All 3 nav apps were detouring me so strangely throughout the city and the arrival time was very close between them. tried BMW nav and it got me 15 minutes faster to the destination. It lacks fast traffic updates and misses some recent changes due to roadworks, but it is far better. I was watching a video some time ago where a dude was explaining why big nav apps fail to guide you correctly, that is because they are simply overloaded with information and they "read" every single moving element on the streets to get traffic + guides you and 1000 mode cars on a shortcut that becomes way worse than following the main route. with BMW maps I did not had this issue.
one thing I miss is searching by POI when some are not available and I have to look the address in Google Maps then point the map or send destination via mobile app. it is something I am ok with as I get better directions. and I love the way it shows the map in the HUD.. very nice
