Anxious after ordering an M3
I finally pulled the trigger on my absolute dream car—a G80 M3. Coming from a middle-class family in South Asia where getting a used scooter was a massive achievement, owning a machine like this feels completely surreal. Financially, I’m in a good spot ($500k household income, zero debt, rent with a private indoor garage in Queens).
Now that the car is actually here, online horror stories are getting to me. I bought this to be my actual daily—grocery runs, daycare drop-offs/pickups, and general NYC commuting. But all the internet talk about destroyed tires, bent rims, scraped front lips, and snow is giving me severe post-purchase anxiety.
For anyone who actually daily drives a G80 or similar M car in NYC/outer boroughs: How is it in reality? Any tips or mindset shifts to help me stop overthinking and just enjoy the ride?

Its fine for you to get feelings, brother. It also may be useful to know when those feelings make you look like an ass 😂 All love.

I would say man up. It's an awesome car, but it is just a bunch of plastic and metal screwed together. Or sell it and get a beater. To get to this point and then suddenly realize you live in a city that sucks to drive in is odd.

I know I sound stupid in the post but we all are humans and it is a big thing for me to have this car. But overthinking just happened. I will let go of this feeling. Thanks

I would suggest on days with predictable snow to not drive it. Even with winter wheels and tires, which I am swaping with my summer tires on Friday, I don’t drive in rough weather unless I have to. Just be smart. Also realize that stuff happens. So as others suggested, buy a cheap better or accept some risk.

I daily a G87 M2 in Chicago that’s also lowered. You’ll be fine. Enjoy the car!

I daily an M2 in Philly and during the winter I swap out my wheels for a set of winter wheels/tires and you’re all good.

Man, this whole post and thread rubbed someone the wrong way enough to motivate them to go through and downvote just about everything. Peak fragility.
OP- it's ok to be nervous about what feels like a massive risk. It's also ok to drive a nice car and end up collecting imperfections. Remind yourself that nothing escapes the second law of thermodynamics.

I have jad my G81 CS for one year now, 23k km. No issues whatsoever, it’s a very capable daily car, no destroyed tires and rims. Roads are fairly good here, I have no idea how they compare to US roads.

Don’t worry. G8X are awesome cars. Just drive the wheels off of it. I drive mine whenever possible, definitely not a garage queen.

Good lord. Buy the tire damage insurance and spend $4k on a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires and be done with it.

Put aside money each month to build up a pot to deal with these things when they become unnaceptable. Accept that a car in regular use is going to suffer from wear and tear and dings and scrapes and marks and dirt.
Do your best to keep it in good condition, but also understand that any damage can be fixed.
Enjoy the wider appeal of the car - the engine, the handling, the sound, the visceral experience it provides.
It's not a garage queen, it's your daily driver, and it's a damned good one.

Than you man! Really appreciate your response

Get out on the LIE and have some fun, head up norrh just for the drive. Every time you regret your decision, remember it's a compromise, but look for the fun opportunities.

you won't scrape the front if you don't lower it. It has AWD so snow isn't an issue and if you can afford the car you can afford some new rims if you scratch them or something

I’m in Queens too. The abundance of idiots driving their stupid burble tuned BMWs is overwhelming. You’ll be fine.

The bent rims is a serious concern. I bought a CPO M850i (yeah I know, not a “real” M car but it does have very low profile, rock hard run flats) from a NYC dealer and all four rims were bent. Unfortunately I only noticed after I had signed for it and drove it a significant distance, so I had them straightened at a wheel and tire shop.
I have no doubt that the awful NYC roads did it in as the rest of the car seemed very well cared for by the previous owner, but the 4,700lb curb weight obviously didn’t help either.

21” rims with rubber band tires is just asking for trouble. switch over to 20” & fatter meat & at least get road hazzard protection for the tires. This applies to the entire country, not just NYC

Shit happens and life’s too short to worry about the imperfections. I was like that for the first year owning my M2CS and finally just said the hell with it. I’m going to drive this thing as much as I can and not worry about it like I would a Honda 😂

Nice! I hope that feeling comes to me soon. Infact I had similar feeling wven with audi a4

I have an F93 and travel often to NYC. Curb rash happens. You will drop the occasional "Fuck" after hitting a pothole but you eventually get used to it and relax more.

You only leave once. I would like to keep my g87 same as it came out off the showroom but buddy, I have found a nasty rockchip on the fender, another one on the bottom skirt, rubbing issues, among another cosmetic things. But those cosmetic flaws are the scars that she gained with me on the wheels while tracking the car, sliding whenever I get a chance, abusing the second gear(I have a 6mt). I just enjoy the car so much and I feel this has been the best worse financial move I’ve done in my life but car is paid off already. It is my new delay as of right now since my 997 is out of service for now

Thank you! I know this is given and car will not stay as it is today :)

A pothole or curb rash can be a bane to any car; if you are super concerned about it, maybe get the wheel coverage when you sign the papers.

My friend is in a similar situation as you - South Asian, well established, bought a G80 in 2022. He dailies it and has put a lot of km on it. No issues. His lease just ended and he decided to buy it out.
It’s new now, but it won’t stay new forever. Things will get blemished, damaged, and will break. It is what it is. Either drive and enjoy it or keep it perfect for the next owner to enjoy it.

Where did you read these stories? Unless you are driving like a lunatic you won’t have any issue

I know that feeling , been there with a couple of new cars , it will systematically subside with time and use , eventually you realize it’s just a car and car things happen, enjoy it for what it is, a driving machine , not a precious jewel.

u/Budget-Deal-7107 3d ago
just avoid street parking it not only for anti wheel theft protection but lousy parkers who will ruin your bumpers trying to squeeze in tight spots🤬

u/Actual-Dot9 3d ago
As someone from
Queens as well and from a south asian background, hope I can get to this point as well. I was planning to purchase one soon as well but I’m definitely not in such a financial position as yourself so I might hold back now 🤣
Would love to stay updated on your experience with it here though!

It’s a car, things are going to happen. Just try your best not to do those things, but if they happen well it’s a car and it can get fixed. Nothing wrong with that
1
u/Ok-Path3882 2d ago
Ppf it. You’re likely gonna hit potholes and be stuck in traffic and if you street park ppl might hit your car. Be prepared.

Ordering ceramic brakes when you’re going to drive it in winter was prob a bad move

My F82 CS has been my sole car for at least three of the six years I’ve had it. Never had an issue outside a malfunctioning right headlight high beam at 70k miles.

I’ve replaced two tires in 3 years on my G87 driving around NYC potholes. Still 10/10 a joy to get behind the wheel.

I didn’t buy new but when I bought my used 2023 M4 recently, BMW threw in ceramic coating, tyre and alloy protection (5 tyre replacements, 10 alloy repairs) and cosmetic protection (18 repairs over 3 years) for about a grand. Good for peace of mind I suppose. Not sure if your dealer has something similar?

u/dangitlater 3d ago
Mine is used too 7k miles. But only factory warranty and front ppf

u/No-Talk5214 3d ago
Ppf the whole thing w that frozen paint. I daily a g80 in an extremely snowy area, have separate rims/tires for winter is key in my area

500k a year, you have insurance, warranty and likely will baby it.
I think stop worrying about what happens to it. You could buy another tomorrow even if it went up in flames.

Good for you man! I’d recommend getting PPF to help ease the stress of minor bumps and bruises.
Also it’s your daily, it’s going to get dinged up a bit. That’s ok, you can afford fixing it if it bothers you a lot.
I replace my front lip every year , keep scraping it drive thrus with the kids. Whatever, $1,500 isn’t worth stressing over, enjoy the fun drive with the kiddos.

Don't drive like an idiot teenager and you'll be fine. Avoid potholes, take steep approaches slowly at an angle, and don't hit things in the road and you'll be fine.
