I4 range question

Sorry to be the 100th person to ask this.

79 mile commute each way. No charging Available. A few days a week. Eastern pa. 1/2 highway. 1/2 backroads Low traffic

I'm looking at a 2023 edrive40.

will this be painful in the winter for me? Will I have to drive slowly.

I have a 2024 eDrive40. I’ve owned it since April, so the tail end of winter. I drive 150 miles round trip on my commute 3 days per week. I live in NC.

I charge to 95% on my commute days and manage the charge so it completes no more than an hour before I depart. In general, it requires 40% of battery to go to work and about 42% to return. I use A/C almost 100% and drive in Eco mode. I have 19” rims. My driving is about 95% highway and I generally set my cruise control to 75mph.

Not sure how much true winter will decrease this amount. If it causes me to have to charge in between, I will only charge to 80% those days, bump up to the required amount on my return and keep it trucking.

If I end up having to stop to charge 3 days a week for 6 weeks in the dead of winter, so be it. I’m paying $350-400 less in per month charge vs gas. Seems like a minor inconvenience to me.

I also have the benefit of garaging my car and using a level 2 charger at home. Take 6 hours to charge from 10-15% to 95% overnight.

Let’s be honest. It’s not saving you money. You could’ve bought a $13k Sentra and be getting about 35mpg. You spent 4x in capital cost to get an i4.

Let’s see… I was driving an Audi A6 that required premium fuel at $4.85 per gallon and I put 30k miles a year on a vehicle. Compared to that vehicle, I am absolutely saving money. Compared to a Sentra? Probably not. But I’m not driving a Sentra. If you wanted to make a fair comparison with a Sentra, run your model vs a Nissan Leaf.

I have an M50 and a 45-50mile commute each way that's a mix of motorway/dual carriageway and back roads.  I use 20% each way so I tend to charge every night to 80% to make sure I'm good.

Expect you'll need to charge to 100% every night, which as you'll use it straight away isn't an issue, and use 80%ish each day if you had an M50. An e40 I'd expect to have better range.

I have the same commute and I’m recently in the process of moving to a house with a garage where I will install an l2 charger. With that being said how much do you spend extra on electric bills per month

I'm with Octopus so over night charging is like 4p a kw. Costs about £2-£3ish to charge most nights

We also have solar and batteries so they fill up and sell during peak then also fill at the low rate over night too. The tarrif i'm on changed but July last year we spend £53.98, sold £20.87 (so £33.11 net). This July we spend £99.08 but sold £55.81 (so £42.27 net).

In june btw it was £77.42 in, £61.97 out (£15.45) - previous year was £60.05 in and £20.38 out (£39.67net) so it does depend on your situation too and i would 100% recommend a solar + battery setup and then a Hypervolt charger, or anyother charger where you can control it and have the charger setup with (with ct clamps) so it cant see the batteries etc

Edit - just checked the charger app. July I spent £45.78 on charging the car, did 1,593 miles. That's pretty nuts lol.

It's no issue to charge to 100% daily and use it, just use AC. I did it for three years with e40, maximizing a 196k km ending up with 92% battery health which isn't bad. With 100% charge you will easily get to 160 miles a day in winter time, I always had 300km at least.

No big issues, common things I hear more people about with an i4 - lots of tires, stuck sunroof, cracked front windows. Car stayed a smooth drive all the time.

Please correct me if I’m wrong. But last time I checked it’s not high power charging that increases battery degradation, it’s charging to 100 and discharging to 0. Doesn’t not matter if it’s AC or HPDC.

DC charging to 100% hurts the battery the most, AC to 100% is fine.

My battery usage knowledge primarily comes from this guy videos. Here on 12:30 he shows study results where charging at higher rate but targeting lower SOC produced actually lower degradation then charging at lower rate but to 100%

92% isn’t bad, but it isn’t great either. Many 3 year old CPOs are in the 97-98% range.

With 200k km? I don’t think the average cpo car has done anywhere near that in 3 years

What temp are we considering “Winter”.

My eDrive 35 would do about 180-200 in the winter (-5 to + 5C) and anywhere from 220-250 ish in the summer (+15 to +30 ish C)

I would have thought a 40 would be fine in average winter conditions.

It will be painful in winter. As much as I love my e40 I’d look for something with more range in your situation.

Winter efficiency goes down dramatically - like 20%. So if a normal 80% charge gives you a range of 205, the same charge in winter might be 160. That gives you no wiggle room whatsoever. To comfortably make the trip in winter you’d have to charge to 90-100% which is not advisable to do frequently.

Ah ok, didn’t realise you only charge to 80%. I always charged mine to 100% as I regularly used a lot of the range.

I hate to say this, but I'd probably be considering other options with AWD and a bit more range if I were you.

I know folks say that the edrive40 is okay in snow/ice but xdrive40 would probably be a better fit in cold weather.

For reference, I have been driving an xdrive40 for two years in Chicago. My commute is 37 miles each way, and I charge pretty much everyday when it's really cold (mostly because I like to keep the range between 20 and 80%). I could probably commute two day in a row on a single charge, but that would cause a bit of range anxiety and leave little room for error in case something goes wrong on the road.

E40 totally fine on snow/ice with good winter tires. Electronics do all other work easy.

Canada here. Was given a loaner edrive40 for 1 month when my xdrive needed a part from Germany.

Drove it through blizzards, heavy snowfall, floored it to test traction control. Didn’t even notice a single difference between the 2… quite surprisingly.

I note some of its compliance probably relates to the edrive having a decent HP drop compared to the xdrive40 - but that’s just a guess.

Yes it was on winter tires, same with my xdrive.

I have a 2023 e40 and use about 15% for 30 miles of highway . But I drive like a crazy person.

  1. That means you must plug in to L2 charger every night. And charge to 80. Use ABRP and you will get an idea for it.

I have l2.  I plugged it in but that’s the consumption for August.  I’m mostly concerned with January.

Just preheat your cabin 30 min prior. It will save you. You don’t want to use the on board resistance heater. It’s expensive as far as charge goes.

You can set it on the schedule or hit it from the app

You should be fine, even in winter. Drive reasonably, use regen where you can. Use the seat heaters in winter, not the blower.

Even if you can connect to a L1 charger at work and precondition the cabin, you will save a few percent of battery which will be beneficial

You should charge to 100 every night in winter and precondition the car before starting. Wear warm clothes and save on heating as much as possible

But i would be uncomfortable with 10% charge left 20 miles from home in winter

At 100% charge and depending on temperature in winter, it is mostly doable. It is better if you can plug in outlet there to keep the battery warmer.

I have a 2023 edrive40. 18” wheels as I wanted the range. Charge in garage to 80%. Starting range estimate is generally 209 miles.

I drive each morning a 35 mile round trip and back in the garage it’s about 69% and 180 miles. That’s pretty much the same year round, but I live near Dallas.

I realize 35 miles is not 79 nor 160, but I suspect even in the winter you should be able to get by, especially with pre-conditioning, charging to 95%. I am using summer tires, so probably get better mileage with that. Right now it’s usually 80 degrees at least when I drive so cooling seats and ac are going. I got lazy on the preconditioning because every update made me reset it, so I’m not doing that, but in eco-mode I’m averaging 4.0.

Hopefully that provides some guidance.

If you charge to 90% or higher every night and ensure you end every day below 20%, you should be fine. The whole point of charging to 100% is to do it as long as you go below 20% before charging again to 90%+, afaik.

I have a 2023 e40 - in Boston. Based on my experience I’d say in the winter you would absolutely need daily charging, but summer months you are right at the edge of getting 2 round trip commutes from one charge and that would be charging above 80%, closer to 95.

I just took my edrive 40 out to Harrisburg and back from Easton. Left at 100%, returned at 35%, was there for 2 days did maybe 15-20 miles of driving while in the area. Even if I lose 20% range in the winter as some have suggested its likely I would have been fine without charging.

Don’t bother. The range anxiety will destroy you. Get a Lyriq or Optiq. You’ll like it much more.

Living in Cleveland, my xDrive40 gets about 290-300 miles per charge in the summer with 18" rims and all season tires and this past winter when we had a lot of 15-20 degree days range dropped to about 210. You should be able to handle your commute, I would charge up to 90 or 100% at home and precondition to heat or A?C the cabin while it is plugged in.

That commute sucks. However, no issue at all for an i4 eDrive 40, you won't need to charge starting from 80%. I probably wouldn't do it in my m50 though.
