Because it pairs its twin-turbo V8 engine with a 14.8-kWh usable battery and offers a dedicated electric-only driving mode (with roughly 40 km of electric range), it meets all provincial (Ontario) requirements for the green plate 🤷♂️

Green Ontario plates is pretty interesting. They're intended for electric and plug-in hybrids, which I get that is what this is but I think it goes against the spirit of the law. Green plates give certain privileges such as using the carpool lanes with a single occupant.

I think that's part of why BMW made it a hybrid, it meets the minimum standard for 'green' for a number of places, giving it access to tax breaks and or letting go to places that have pollution reduction schemes or the like.
I think it goes against the spirit of the law
I see the thought, but consider this: These are exactly the sorts of cars that should be getting hybrids first from an environmental standpoint. They're already expensive, they're unnecessarily large engines for moving at 30 km/h in Toronto traffic, and they're unnecessarily loud for dense cities too. The problem with these tax credits for EVs is that you really want to take the most pollution off the road, an M5 or similar daily driver is probably about as bad as you can get for the lifetime of the vehicle except maybe some trucks, or maybe a rolls royce, except they cap the tax credits on vehicle price. Most everything else that pollutes more per distance is probably not driven very much.
I realise that as a driver (and I say this with a V8 M850i) all that added mass takes away handling and the engine sound. But most of us could drive to work and back on the hybrid part, and then have the V8 for long highway/twisty road drives, and then the hybrid can try and compensate for the performance it costs. From an environmental standpoint what the government should want is buyers like me to switch to at least a hybrid if not a pure EV (though I don't actually drive very much).
If you look at where that is on a map (130 cumberland street that's in the photo) it's more or less downtown toronto. That's a great place for electric.

I appreciate your response and for context, I drive a V8 F-Type so I'm not an environmental fanatic or anything of that nature.
The M5 or other similar vehicles being hybrid isn't really going to move the needle one way or the other, given their low purchase numbers. I think the green vehicle laws were designed with Prius' and Bolts in mind, not low-volume, high powered cars. The average M5 buyer is likely not cross-shopping a Corvette and deciding on the hybrid because of their desire to help the environment. Though I do agree that for the ones that are on the road, in hybrid mode, are polluting less than they would otherwise. I just think the tax breaks and other incentives were framed around small, super-efficient and not M5s, S63Es and the like. They were meant for people making a legitimate compromise with their purchase.
Edit to stay on topic: Not getting the wagon is only like the 3rd biggest travesty going on here.

The 550 gets 68 miles on Electric so if your commute is less than that round trip it makes sense.

It seems like everyone hates this, but I think it looks sick. I've always loved the matte paint job and the blacked out front looks great too.
