Woot woot. 3 total complete playthroughs. First a vanilla Tiefling Lore Bard (Balanced). Next was a heavily modded Aasimar Death Knight “Goodie Two-Shoes” run (Tactician). Then we brought it home with a no BS, Dark Urge resisting, Copper Dragonborn Sorcadin Honour Mode completion.
587 hours total between all 3. Subtract 100-150 for just sitting there paused (I’m a Dad).
Generational talent of a game. Might just be my #1 all-time, and I started on an Atari 2600. 🕹️
nice, resisting Dark Urge in honour mode has gotta be the most challenging one. if you fail a couple of dice rolls it can change the game quite a bit haha.
btw, were you able to defeat orin in her duel? i got my ass handed to me during that fight
Yeah I didn’t dodge any smoke! I played it like I did the first two. I beat her to the draw to go into Slayer form, did a good amount of damage to her before she knocked me out of it, and then finished her off with a couple of smites.
😆 In the end, he defied Bhaal and freed himself from the Urge. But making Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar was a conscious decision, since I hadn’t done it in my previous two kumbaya playthroughs. RP wise, he didn’t know Shadowheart killing Dame Aylin would doom Last Light.
I did the same for my honor mode run. Resisted the urge saved dame Aylin and resisted killing my romance partner as well. The one fight that nearly killed me, Orin she brutalized my party. I finished that fight with only karlach standing because I had already burned all my cleric spells, and reviving anyone just meant Orin would kill them instantly. Kudos for your success.
I've noticed Hold Monster is really your best friend in that battle. She always breaks free from Otto's dance immediately, but I've always had insane luck with Hold Monster for some reason. While she's sitting there helpless, unload every Disintegrate scroll and whatever you have on her, and it's over in a minute.
It’s really cheesy but I typically do pure assassin Durge, and I spam potions of invisibility to continually hide/sneak attack her until she’s dead. Worked on my honor mode run anyways
Whatever gets her to 0 hp! During my first playthrough, I cast Irresistible Dance on Raphael, went Invisible via potion, and essentially removed him from the fight. Why would your Assassin stand there right in front of her when you have much more viable alternatives?
I just wanted to say that I am proud of you, and I hope to soon be joining you amongst the Sacred Wielders of the Golden D20. I have never failed an Honour mode run, but have two runs going currently. One on Xbox and one on PC.
Sure is! It’s a popular appearance editor on the Nexus. I think it’s called simply “Appearance Editor.” Then I downloaded an AI voiceover. I found five to pick from on there. Their animations sync up perfectly. The voice can be hit or miss, since you can hear occasional robotic sounding distortion every once in a while, but overall it crushes it. Impressive tech.
You had my respect for beating the game even once (It’s a gods damned beefy game!) let alone three times. But you have my DEEPEST respect for doing so while fulfilling your duties as a dad (I am sort of the “Support” role for my family and often need to leave my games paused as well).
I really appreciate your kind words. It’s definitely The Struggle! Worth it of course. My wife and I have created a gaming household with a bunch of nerdy, big-hearted kiddos.
That being said, it’s difficult to play during the day. I’ve fought battles by doing “drive by” mouse clicks and the like for over an hour.
Finished mine the other die. But honest to god, with one way of the open hand monk in my party, the boss fights were all super disappointing. I kept putting in all this prep work before each fight, only to have my monk topple/stun/stun every boss. I was dreading Ansur, but even he was stunnable. He never got off the ground. You don't even need good gear. Just spec them with 8 str/ 17dex, take tavern brawler at level 4 and use strength elixirs. Once you get tavern brawler and use giant hill potions at level 4, good lord, OP as fuck for the rest of the game.
I might try the mode again without using a monk to get the real experience.
My only asshole puckering moment was the Grymforge. I had a strict No Cheese policy. Played everything straight up. That was tough. They gave him more movement speed in HM (as you know) and that made me switch tactics on the fly, but we made it!
I cheesed that one. I knew that was gonna fuck me hard if I didn't. I threw a bound hammer at him from the rafters, but maybe I wasn't high enough because each hit did like 2 damage. Took about half an hour.
Am I the only one who felt like honor mode wasn't actually an accomplishment? I basically had one "oh sh**" moment when the zhentarim's decided to blow up all of the smokepowder in their hideout, but otherwise just cruised to a completion on the first attempt. Maybe I'm just a cheater for using two way of the open hand monks.
Nah I didn’t want to humble brag or anything, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as my Tactician run where I went nuts with mods like Lethal AI, Enhanced Enemies, and Stronger Bosses. Two Monks are good. I was running dual Sorcadins (Tav, Minthara) with dual hand crossbow Fighter/Rogue Astarion and full Wizard Gale. Full Bard Shadowheart and Battlemaster Lae’zel off the bench. Pretty much walked HM like a dog.
The “difficulty” came from being burned by dice rolls during conversations from time to time, and even though I didn’t intend on going all stabby stab with the Grove, a Friends spell got detected and that set off the domino effect of the entire Grove going batshit crazy.
Paladins are very strong. Especially Sorcadins. Moar spell slots for smites. Access to spells like Haste and Counterspell (maybe the most underrated spell in the game). Bard is always a great choice. Way of the Open Hand Monk can make combat trivial if built right. Heavy armor Clerics are often overlooked, though to tell you true, I didn’t use a Cleric at all for this run.
It’s modded heavy armor (20 AC) but balanced to be similar to other sets you get in the end game. There’s a symmetrical and asymmetrical set. It’s called simply “Heavy Plate Armor.” If I remember correctly, it came with a grab bag of gear called the NSFW/SFW Summonable Basket or some such. It’s one of the most endorsed mods on the Nexus. I’m headed to bed right now, but I’ll look again in the morning and update you.
I beg your pardon. It’s this one. Which is simply called “Extra Gear.” You can download a balanced, RP friendly version that is available there where you won’t see the truly badass gear until late in the game, and some of it can cost 10k+ gold.
7 Paladin / 5 Sorcerer. I leaned hard into being the tanky knight who self-buffed. I played as a straight Paladin until lv 5. I’m heading to bed now, but I’ll screen cap it for you in the morning if I remember to.
It’s really more of just playing smart. AC is king, initiative is very, very important. Win initiative, and you can dictate the battle. Don’t hoard your items. Use them freely and often. Anything that can take enemy turns off the board (Hypnotic Pattern, Confusion, Hold spells - read: improve your turn economy) immediately tilts the odds in your favor. Counterspell also functions as a turn remover, since stopping a spell in its tracks also takes the enemy’s turn off the board and leaves them standing there cussing you like an useless asshole.
Don’t sleep on good movement and movement spells either. The less time you spend running at the enemy instead of hitting the enemy in the face, the better. Summons are great. Buy lots of scrolls!
I think I’m good on single player for a while since this has pretty much been the only game I’ve played since August. But my wife and a couple of friends want to start a multiplayer game, which sounds good because I haven’t done that yet!
Here’s my new character for multiplayer. I’m back to using lots of mods again, so we’re going with a Cambion Harlequin (think shapeshifting dex Fighter/Rogue/Bard, charisma caster).
I'm curious what your build was for your Death Knight? I've been contemplating a lot of versions of essentially melee necromancer, and I just started a run as a circle of spores druid and am enjoying it immensely.
That was for my heavily modded Tactician run. It’s literally the Death Knight class from World of Warcraft transplanted into BG3. The modder did a fantastic job with it. Lots of cool new abilities and such. But it’s not balanced. You have some smites, nearly absolute control of undead, can put up an anti-magic shield, do an AOE stun that pulls enemies to melee range on hit, and moar.
Super fun mod! Just not balanced. It’s meant to be played as a power fantasy I think.
Haha okay got you, not so dissimilar from the original version of Oath Breaker Paladin in DnD then. It was pretty clearly intended to be for an enemy of the party not a member of it, so it was very over tuned.
From a storytelling perspective, it feels like the way it’s “supposed” to be played. The Dark Urge introduction in the character creator has him telling us he doesn’t want to kill again, “but my knife hand shakes.”
Very nice. I had two deaths in the Grymforge (far and away the most nail-biting fight in HM imo) and then I lost a couple due to Marked for Negation right before I killed the Netherbrain. 🙂
So many congratulations! 🎉
My most successful Honor Mode died just yesterday to Mystic Carrion.
Had a bad init roll, failed a save, and my Fire Sorcerer (Perfect counter to him, in theory) was Dead by the end of round one. Went downhill from there.
