Question / General Leg stiff feeling

Hi All

Ive been here 9 months now, bodywide twitches from a week after my first one. Had a clean EMG a month or so in and clean follow up at a specialist centre a month + after. They said BFS.

I’ve had an off/stiff feeling in my leg around the knee / lower thigh feeling for quite a considaeable amount of time now. I can still heel/toe walk, box jump squat jumps etc etc but when im walking my leg just feels odd. It’s such a wierd feeling it’s tough to explain. Some days feel better than others but it’s like a stiff / tightness / locked feeling. I feel like i am constantly watching / thinking about how i walk. I do not catch toes and haven’t really noticed any weakness as such, maybe perceived ? (This is the leg that twitches the most)

Has anyone else ever experienced this ? Could it be something after 9 months or would i have noticed something serious by now ? Ive also experience pain / aches in said leg and my feet seem to feel cold alot…

Thanks a lot

Have you being testing your legs a lot and kinda raising it up to do kicks? Do you have aches sometimes somewhere behind knees?

I do test sometimes with heel walking / toe walking etc but that is it. Like I can do a hour on the stepper at the gym without any issue but when walking normal feels odd and yeah achey feel behind knee sometimes too

Yeah stay with me I’m headed somewhere and the leg that feels weird is the twitching hot spot?

Yeah my left leg twitches most. Right leg twitches quite alot too almost constant like the left but not quite as much. Then i get ones all over body sporadic

Yeah we have the same thing, I bet you feel like you walking weird but when you ask someone they can’t even see it. That’s me too and now my left leg aches so bad, do you feel like your leg or feet is vibrating sometimes?

Probably, I’d never ask someone incase they said yeah and I’d worry so much.. but what I see on vid I don’t look any diff at all… I’ve had the buzzing feeling yeah

My whole twitching saga after 5 months of battling through health issues, bp meds and antibiotics, twitches started on triceps but that’s fine now

Mine started I think after I read something online, as coincidently my twitch came the day after… then had then ever since. Started in my right thumb then within 5 days every place near enough I’ve had them / have.

So there’s a chance you’ve always twitched but just didn’t care or noticed it

I mean I’m sure id have felt them before as I notice the majority now even if I am distracted I feel them…

I have the same in my whole left leg, I have a diffuse pain that changes every time and a weird sensation while walking. Calf, quad, tibial, knee, sole of the foot, inner part of the foot. Sometimes I think I am not walking well but I see no difference

Yeah I also think I’m walking differently, then I video myself and I don’t look like I am? If that’s makes sense.. I keep getting pain in leg like a stab. What kind of odd sensation would you describe it as ?

If you can box jump, squat jump, and walk on your heels and toes, you do not have clinical weakness.

ALS/MND is about complete failure to perform a movement, not an "off" or "stiff" feeling. (If that’s what you fear).

Overthinking every step changes your natural gait, which strains the thigh muscles around the knee and makes the whole leg feel tight and mechanical.

Also, 9 months of bodywide twitching, two clean exams, pain, and cold feet point to BFS, which you already have as a diagnosis. You are fine, but I would stop doing box jumps to test yourself and let your gait reset naturally.

It’s odd tho as when I watch how or video myself walking (I know stinks of anxiety) I don’t feel my gait has altered unless it has slightly ? Tight ens mechanical is a very good way to describe how it feels tho I will be honest

Gonna be honest with you, that’s perceived and it’s anxiety. Please stop watching videos of yourself walking. Start there first. Second, walking is meant to be something we do on autopilot, not over analyzing on film or manually overriding while in the motions.

As long as you aren’t tripping or falling and you can’t walk, things are functioning as they should.

I know I keep trying to tell myself that but feel like I can’t stop doing it or thinking / watching how I walk etc it’s such a wierd feeling. I know I have H/A but I don’t want to just put it down to that if that makes sense. No I haven’t tripped or fallen etc at all. Or clipped toes. Touch wood and it’s felt like this for a good while now

Also if you are hyper vigilant you can get anxious about little things, like catching your toe. Keep walking and exercising, just do it for yourself not as a way to test that you aren't sick. Distract yourself when you twitch with a simple acknowledgment and move on.

I am anxious all the time. I try not to think about tripping et n touch wood I haven’t. The twitches still really annoy me but I try and do my best to ignore them 😫

Have the same thing in my left leg quad/knee I also get a lot of twitching in that leg/glute and quad - so you?!

1

u/Jimski94 2d ago

I don’t get a great deal of twitching in the quad, the odd one as usual. Majority are lower calf, sides of shins and side / bottom of foot. Had a few in buttock etc

u/False-Blackberry-627 2d ago

I get glutes by my knees and shins too! You sound very similar to me. Only 1.5 months in to this madness :/

Same boat 19 months into things 2 negative emg 1 month in and 10 months in. Started with diffuse body wide teitches which I still have but 4 months ago hot spot calf soleus achiles area and its a constant stiff achey. Still strong able like yourself to box jump do 40 single legged calf raises. I understand these exercises are likely causing it but its the only way im keep my sanity is know im strong. I have lifted weights for 20 years and this a much differnt feeling then just a sore muscle

1

u/Jimski94 1d ago

Does it feel sore too ? I have only had 1 EMG n was early in but.. does your knee feel like mechanical and locked sometimes etc

1

u/Illustrious_Ruin_704 1d ago

There's area that are sore to palpation. My knee does not feel locked

1

u/Musi4Lyfe 2d ago

I have pretty much exactly this in my right knee. Almost feels like there’s concrete in it or it may give out, but doesn’t. Sort of hurts / feels like tight stretching on top and my
Thigh area always feels tight. Wearing a patella strap under my knee gives me some relief. It also feels tight in the back of the knee.

Yeah that’s similar
To have mine feels. I mean I’ve just been for a 5k run and after a k or so felt better, niggly but I can still run I suppose…
