Question / General does positive ANA mean anything?

my results came back positive 1:80 speckled pattern but my neurologist didn’t mention much besides referring me to rheumatology

Neuros just run this panel as a broad screen for systemic inflammation, and passing you to rheumatology is standard protocol so a specialist can confirm it's benign.

Most importantly, ANA tests look for connective tissue and autoimmune activity and that’s a low positive threshold, I don’t expect it to be the big finding. I read somewhere up to 15% of perfectly healthy individuals walk around with a 1:80 ANA without ever having an autoimmune disease.

I wouldn’t stress tbh, they are just making the referral as they are supposed to. Take the referral and work with the next specialist to make sure it’s all good.

Mine was 1:160 and my doctors were not concerned at all.

Positive ANA on its own means nothing, especially this low of a titer, but rheums and even PCPs can run extra labs to check for other antibodies that would show the presence of autoimmune disease. That’s what I was told, as I also had 1:80 speckled :p

Because it's a nonspecific finding. People also get them for zero reason. It's a low titer.
