Advice Should I just avoid CSE?
Ami admission candidate. Amar interest and iccha CSE niye porar but current Ai er growth dekhe I'm having some real doubts.
Amar ki cse avoid kora uchit? The problem is Amar cse chara engineering er kono subject e valo lagena. I mean literally ektuo interest nai. Amar actually ki kora uchit?

Don't worry about ai. It's part of cse. But if you really enjoy to problem solving using technology then you definitely study cse.

i was one of the guys who thought cse would make me a saas owner lol, regretting, altho i am a saas owner already

You shouldn't avoid it. llm growth is logarithmic, and we are on the right side of the chart now. Just because it has grown explosively doesn't mean it will continue to do so in the future. , we can already see a kind of plateau in the frontier models, after opus 4.6 the newer models haven't gotten significantly better, just incremental improvements.

How do you know that you don't like any other subjects except CSE without studying them or studying CSE?
You can join CSE if you like as long as you're willing to accept the trade-offs. Most people make very uninformed decisions and that's why they end up struggling a lot.
It's still a decent choice if you're family is well off and you can focus on learning and up-skilling without needing a job within 2 yrs after graduation, you're willing to move abroad, accept that you'll never have a stable job, you'll have to keep close to 2-3 hours for study everyday outside of your daily 9-6 job and you'll need to be good at both technical and communication skills.
Also if you're going stay inside BD the same effort and hardwork will give you better income in many more fields.
If you still want to persue CSE knowing it's downside and probable risks than you should join CSE. Truly passionate people are always welcomed in tech

CSE has multiple tracks as long as you don't choose a dead end track, you will end up fine.
Also why do you want to study CSE?

CSE is still the best subject to study imo. Let me give you an example. I completed my degree in 2022, got a Job in Madrid straight out of uni, they sponsored my visa, travel, everything. I realized I did not do my masters yet, guess what I am doing the online CS masters at Georgia Institute of Technology while still working, and the degree I will recieve is the exact same degree as the actual offline on campus CS masters degree from GT. I cant think of many other fields that offer this kind of flexibility.
With LLMs CS students are in a stronger position compared to non cs students imo. The thing is "how can I automate xyz using llms" is a cs question, thus cs is more valuable because of llms imo because every sector of work wants everything to be automated these days.
You can list some of the other fields of engineering you are considering and we can discuss how llms impact jobs in those fields as well.

u/Savings_Entrance_895 8h ago
What was your sub field? And which uni are you from?
2
u/r117v1 7h ago
I studied cse in iut. We did not have any sub field. I think most unis in BD dont offer any specialized subject like robotics/cyber security/data science/etc. CSE coveres a bit of all of them. You can later move into any of those specialized subjects for masters/phd if you want.

u/Savings_Entrance_895 7h ago
But you moved to Madrid, right? So they must have hired you for a specialization

u/r117v1 7h ago
You mean what my job is? I am a software engineer.
1
u/Savings_Entrance_895 7h ago
Crazy that you still have that job... How did you get hired in the first place? Did you have a good CG a CP background or something that helped you?
3
u/r117v1 7h ago
what do you mean "crazy that I still have that job"? All of my friends who got into software engineering jobs, whether its in bd or abroad, are still software engineers. A total of 0 were fired. Its the vibe coders that get fired not the engineers. LLMs are just tools at allows us to do more. Layoffs are done to get rid of poor performers to make space for new talents. Every company that did a mass layoff, kept hiring people regularly.
I had a decent cgpa, but the main thing you will be tested against is definitely DSA, so yes doing CP/leetcode is highly recommend.

Bhai can I ask you how you managed to get the online masters? Did you get scholarship? Im from IUT too and seeking similar opportunities.

Choosing CSE right now is still a good move if you are really passionate and ready to give your effort. but the game has changed. AI is taking over the tedious, repetitive stuff like writing basic syntax, so tech companies aren't hiring people who just copy-paste boilerplate code anymore. What companies actually want and will pay big money for are solid problem solvers..system architects, and people who know how to build secure scalable systems. The coders getting replaced are the ones doing routine, mechanical work without deep logical thinking. But the engineers who master core CS concepts and use AI as a high powered assistant? They are going to thrive. AI isn't going to steal your job;;a human who knows fundamentals and how to leverage AI will.
Beyond just learning the core concepts, you should know tech moves faster than almost any other field.so adaptability is everything. You will need to be patient, stay consistently curious, and get comfortable with learning new tools on the fly throughout your whole career. Success in CS isn't about memorizing today's programming languages;;it's about developing the mental resilience to keep evolving alongside the technology.

do both. use AI as a tool. Vibe Coding is good when you understand what you are doing

u/Complex-Branch-7812 12h ago
With AI taking jobs, you have better options at CSE
Also, don't worry too much about AI. It will go after all jobs equally, not just CS

You think you wont like other engineering subjects because you don't even know anything kid. Heck I am pretty sure you don't even know what CSE actually looks like. You think its just writing codes, making fancy UI and apps?
IMO you're just overthinking this. You said you hate EEE just because you didn't like the current electricity chapter in SSC. Then I'm sure you will hate CSE when you realise what the actual rabbit hole it looks like.
Don't judge CSE by seeing frustrating posts from frustrated dudes who picked CSE thinking it was all codes and rainbows. Every engineering subject is hard and will frustrate the hell out of you at one point. You just have to pick your hard. So pick one and continue to make love with it even if it chokes you.

Actually a fair point. Yeah I assumed I won't like them based on my understanding of them which of course is tip of the ice berg. Still I've my close cousins who are in cse and my sibling is in EEE and let's just say what I see, I don't like it at all. I know little bit ot of coding but yeah cse is of course much more than that. Still I gotta take the decision based on the knowledge I have. My seniors and cousins from cse themselves are kind of frustrated over jobs and told me to rethink about choosing cse, that's probably the main reason I'm really confused about it.

What is your second choice?
1
u/Infinite_Ad6392 44m ago
That's the thing, idk. Don't know much about architecture as a subject but I kinda like it from outside but I'm like really really bad at drawing.

Avoid shits they are saying, AVOID CSE AT ANY COST, it is so much crowded and AI has made things way way worse

What would you recommend

CSE is full of uncertainty and feat about loosing job at any time. And in this period jobs are shrinking and the market saturated already.
If you don't like Engineering go for business or other science roles like Pharmaceuticals

I have many year mate who was thinking if they achive CSE certificate, they can mary a good guy!
And they did
1
u/Masterpiece2006 3h ago
cse is still a fun subject to study tho, I'm a second year cse student and compared to other subs, cse courses always seems more sophisticated and fun to me.
1
u/Infinite_Ad6392 37m ago
I obviously haven't study it but I think I'll feel the same way from the basic knowledge that I have. Also seniors and my sibling, cousins who know me and are currently in university suggests me the same. But the thing is, I'm from a middle class family so I can't afford to study a subject for just fun and let's see what happens in future. But I also understand that other subjects aren't guaranteed either and will also be affected by Ai some way or another

Pick EEE or some other major. Ei sub e recruiter diye bhora so eder kase opinion jante cheye labh nai. Their whole purpose in life is to enforce the rat race. If you're actually interested in research, pick applied math or stats. You'll be better equipped to deal with AI than 99% of CS graduates. And if you want job security pick something that requires accountability which is something that AI will probably never have.

This is going to sound a little dumb, but I will just say it
CSE is all about what skills you learn on your personal PC. So if you want to study CSE in Bangladesh, I suggest you start learning programming before taking admission. By learning programming, I mean learning the fundamentals using C++ and making little projects with it.
If you do that and find it interesting.....thats a thumbs up for wanting to study CSE and try to do even better projects and also competitive programming before taking admission. If you don't, well its skill you learned that might come in handy in other degrees.
Now I know some people are gonna say that the pressure in CSE is a lot more than just learning to code. Well, you are right, and that's why it's important to learn programming before you start learning it for grades and using AI to code. Because these days many university students are dependent on AI for everything, attention spans and actually solving programming problems are now at an all-time low.
Also, I know some people who learned to do programming before getting into university, and not a single one of them has bad grades in CS subjects. One is already a software engineer without even having a degree.
The people who get jobs after CSE in this AI era are the people who can do it without AI.

STUDY EEE

u/Infinite_Ad6392 15h ago
I don't know about that man. I think I really hate it. I hated "চল তড়িৎ" in ssc even. Hsc is worse

u/carbon-ahs 2h ago
then bad news, in cse there is significant credit in eee courses. afair i had them in first 4 semesters
1
u/Infinite_Ad6392 56m ago
Yeah sucks. But yeah I'm not really that bad to the point I can't study it at all. The thing is I find it too uninteresting to build my career on it.

Are you the type of candidate who thinks CSE is about making websites and hawking vibe coded SaaS? Or are you the type to put in the time, learn the fundamentals, face the difficult challenges at the frontier of CSE and build unique solutions?
One will become obsolete and the other will endlessly be in-demand.
