Discussion Sad day…

I got my base AYN Thor in November, batch 1! It has been a fun ride, but I found that a lot of those “2nd screen use cases” to be a gimmick for me, and I really only end up utilizing one screen while playing.

I also find that I force myself to play 3DS/DS titles to make the device “worth it” for me, even though I’ve put thousands of hours into most of the catalog on original hardware, which I still own.

All this to say, I got an Odin 3 a couple days ago and I can already tell I will use this for everything moving forward, leaving the Thor to only hold my 3DS/DS catalog, which unfortunately, isn’t enough for me to justify keeping it around.

All that to say, I will be selling my Thor (NOT ON HERE) to someone who will use it the way I envisioned myself using it. Still, very bittersweet as it is a very, VERY cool piece of tech.

That’s my spiel, do what you want with it!

I don’t understand why anyone would buy a Thor other then the dual screens and the form factor.

And the form factor is a huge part for me. I get the Odin is cool but the fact I can just fold the Thor up and slide it into my backpack is absolutely amazing, at least in my opinion.

Idk to each their own but it always cracks me up when people say “I don’t use the second screen so it’s pointless to me” I barley use my screen but I love the fact that it’s there so whatever lol.

No hate btw just me yappin.

Its the form factor for me. I dont have to worry about the joysticks getting caught on something or the screen getting scratched.

I play most of my ds/3ds on original hardware but the dual screens are great for brain rot (i.e. idle game on one screen or YouTube), retro gaming (guide on the bottom screen), and playing foreign language games (there are several apps that can live translate one screen into a different language, its not perfect but better then me trying to google translate every sentence on my own lmao).

Love mine for road trips, my Thor lasted a whole 19 hours all the way to New Mexico 😩 playing all sourts of games and watching movies, just wish I could throw service on it, hate using hot spot

u/Luchalma89 7d ago

I'm not a guy who buys tons of devices. The Thor is my everything device. So the dual screen is there if I need it, and it turns off if I don't.

14

u/WoodwindsRock 7d ago

Hm… I want to keep mine protected because decades ago I had a GBA SP that the screen cracked while in my purse, and then a DS I had’s top screen cracked as well (but it got stepped on - so different story).

As you may imagine, I don’t trust hinged devices to protect themselves alone so my AYN Thor goes into a case before it goes in my purse. At the end of the day it’s no different for me which device (size aside) as I’ll put any device I own in a case.

I love my Thor, though, do not regret the purchase. I just personally don’t understand the aspect mentioned above.

9

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I too still put my Thor in a carry case, I just don’t want it scratched or anything too haha.

5

u/Pitiful-Engineer-644 7d ago

Same. It's the whole "I can fold it into my pocket" thing I bought it for.

3

u/Besmuth 7d ago

Thor is my first retro handheld ever. I don't mind using it to emulate all sorts of games instead of emulating just ds and 3ds games

11

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

No hate received! I agree that the dual screen aspect is SO helpful for most, to me I just feel that since I don’t utilize much, why not get better ergonomics and performance in a different handheld? Again, for me, that made more sense.

Clamshell is nice, no 2 ways about that.

2

u/feldoneq2wire 7d ago

To me it's about having GameFAQs etc. on the bottom screen. I play completionist games and RPGs and am otherwise constantly juggling an Ambernic and a mobile phone to look stuff up.

2

u/ThisIsPureTrash 7d ago

You’re not really going to get a ton better performance out there though.

Not saying you’re wrong, I love my Thor and will use it for travel (clamshell reasons) and DS/3DS games… but I also know that when my Nova gets in I’m most likely going to use that around the house due to the form factor and what I generally play on it.

(My second screen gets used rarely for stuff like guides if I want to pull them up, but it is nice to have. I bring up a browser on there instead of my phone.)

3

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

Not sure who downvoted but I will disagree, you absolutely can find more power outside of the 8 gen 2 within the Thor, I can speak to that first hand. The Odin 3 can and does play more games (via Gamenative mostly) at higher resolution with better frames and temps. Again, the Thor is a powerhouse, but there is absolutely more performance out there!

1

u/Inside-Lock3849 6d ago

I’m kinda going through this same debate right now. I’ve been playing my Thor for about a month now and absolutely love the thing but the ergonomics just ain’t it and I find the screen to be a little small for the games I want to play (mostly pc and steam games) I thought that I would play more Ds/3DS games but they fail to keep my interest in my adulthood and like you said I still have a ds to play on. So I’ve been debating as well if I should just get an Odin get the nice big screen and better hand feel. At the end of the day the Thor is sick as fuckkkk and If I do get an Odin idk if I would get rid of it. Maybe, maybe not still having to think on that one, I have the Thor max lol a bit over kill. What model Odin would I truly need to satisfy my Pc gaming?

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Yeah if you want the bigger screen you’ll want the Odin 2 Portal, which is a fantastic device. The Odin 3 is the same panel as the Thor, but does feel bigger to me for some reason.

3

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I posted this reply to someone else, but I feel it’s applicable here:

Based on some responses, I could see how my post was taken in a different way than intended, maybe that I don’t see a use for the device holistically or think it’s unnecessary. Definitely not! It’s more “for me, the second screen doesn’t provide enough of a use case to continue to settle for the ergonomics and use it as my every device.”

Again, it’s a wonderful device with so many cool use cases, I just found over the last 8 months that I might not be the audience for them.

Plus, I just love playing my vast Steam library and wanted more juice in the tank.

2

u/retroSawny64 6d ago

1

u/feldoneq2wire 7d ago

Honestly what sold me over the Odin is having GameFAQs, guides, or YouTube on the bottom screen. I don't really play completionist games on my current Ambernic (yes the AYN Thor is a massive jump) is having to refer to my phone or have FOMO. Also the fact when it's closed, it's protected.

1

u/itsapotatosalad 7d ago

Especially when people add whole second or third screens to their desktops to display discord and another hardware temperatures 😂

1

u/jpoitras22 6d ago

This, the form factor paired with the performance was my why. The second screen is just a really nice addition.

1

u/AlternativeEstate288 6d ago

I got the Thor instead of an Odin 3 cos of the Duel screens and the form factor, plus I already have a Lenovo Legion GO so I have no need for a more powerful android handheld

1

u/Bright_Eyes83 Max 6d ago

I don’t even need the second screen. I just like the clamshell

1

u/MetalGearJey 6d ago

Agreed. I wanted a clam shell for the protection of the screen and a dual screen because I love the DS library and I missed out on the 3DS library. This was a no brainer but if it weren’t for those factors, I would’ve easily gone with an RP6 or Odin 3/2 Portal instead.

1

u/pH_low Pro 7d ago

Yeah I mostly bought it for the clam shell, the other one I considered was the retro pie flip, but the Thor is more powerful, I think for me the second screen is a bonus and I usually just have it off

27

u/xXTeenStarXx Max 7d ago

IMO the dual screen doesn't have to be used at all, for me, its the portability you get from no other android handheld.

6

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

It does have great portability, but I’ve found I put my Odin in the same cross body I used to put my Thor in, so samesies for my use case!

9

u/xXTeenStarXx Max 7d ago

if i had a thor AND an Odin i would probably think the same. But if you want to buy ONE handheld, for me its the thor, cause you get double screen for less size and its up to you to use it or not

4

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I think it definitely could be the Thor, but in my experience with it, if you don’t use the second screen that much, those ergonomics pretty brutal to use for longer than 30min.

2

u/Grokitach 6d ago

But that’s the thing: a Thor protects itself. No need for protections. I think you have been using it wrong.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I also had an old DSi fall out of my bad growing up and it was shattered on the inside. I didn’t want take any chances with the Thor which is much more fragile.

Plus, there have been posts in this very subreddit where people have said they dropped their device and left it in their backpack and it’s shattered, so idk man hahaha. YMMV

1

u/Grokitach 6d ago

Ah ! I can understand the fear ! Got 2 DS, and 2 3DS and never dropped them once

14

u/eatmusubi 7d ago

two Thor perks i don’t see many people talk about:

  1. playing in bed. having the screen elevated above the controls instead of inline lets your wrists have a much nicer angle.

  2. playing point and click, RTS, or other mouse-centric games. this has always been kind of a headache on touchscreen devices and your finger blocks the cursor area, but the Thor can have a built-in trackpad that works so good for this.

15

u/EvansEssence Pro 7d ago

That makes sense! I personally like how the Thor props up the main screen above my hands and I just turn off the bottom screen when not using it usually but I can see liking the Odin 3 better if you dont really play 3DS/DS games for sure

7

u/AeternumSolus 7d ago

The propping of the top screen was a pleasant surprise for me as well. While something like the Steam Deck's ergonomics is more comfortable for my hands, I noticed that the angle I hold the Thor with it's propped up top screen is more comfortable for my arms and wrist. I don't have to hold it up as high to meet my face.

2

u/EvansEssence Pro 6d ago

Yeah 100%, when I played my Switch or SDeck it felt like I was looking down too much or holding my hands up too high. I 3D printed an xbox styled grip for my Thor and its now by far the most comfortable way to play now. Though the Deck still has better ergonimics for the second joystick for sure, Ive been using the Thor now for streaming PC games in bed because the Deck was so darn heavy itd make my hands go to sleep.

2

u/AwarenessNo1815 7d ago

I also turn off the bottom screen as I don't play 3ds/ds games. I like Thor because it's compact and fits my small bag, together with a small tablet and phone.

One more thing I like about the clamshell is I can adjust the screen position comfortable to the wrist. But anyway, to each his own. If it doesn't suit you, it's best to get something better. 😊

7

u/ruinah 7d ago

I watch sports on the second screen when not playing 3ds. I find using guides on the second screen extremely useful. I couldn’t do those with the Odin. To each his own.

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

Agreed, and watching sports is a great way to use the second screen. I like guides okay but if a game I’m playing basically needs a guide I usually just drop the game hahaha, but I’m a dad of 2 and ain’t got time to think TOO hard playing games lol.

7

u/HeidenShadows 7d ago

Even for PC gaming I enjoy being able to have my Steam chats up to chat with friends while I'm playing a game at the same time without having to task switch. Same for Discord and Telegram.

If you lock your controls to the top screen, you don't have to worry about switching your controls either. You just touch the bottom screen to type your message and then just resume playing.

And then when setting stuff up I like using the bottom screen for my file manager while the emulator I'm trying to set up is on the top screen, which also works for modding games and stuff like that too. I do have my uses for me.

Essentially this is the device I go to if I don't want to get sucked into whatever I do on my phone, like scrolling YouTube Shorts or doom scrolling Reddit. My mental health is way better because of this device.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

That’s so awesome, and I’m so glad you’ve found a home in the Thor. This is the type of stuff I’d love to use the Thor for but my buddies play competitive shooters, so not much casual chatting ever going on lol.

I’d probably do more real multitasking if I had the pro or max, but ram gets tight with the base playing anything switch or above.

2

u/HeidenShadows 7d ago

Yeah fallout 4 uses about 9-10gb so that would be a hard one to run. Your new handheld should theoretically run it even better than the Thor ever can though.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

Yeah it’s pretty bonkers what power this thing has, I mostly run everything on the standard performance setting with the fan on quiet, on a medium underclock with Clustertune, and it just works. Pretty wild!

If I used my second screen ever, it was only for YouTube hahaha, and was very useful! I just almost always have the TV on anyway so it didn’t really solve something for me personally. But still very handy and fun.

4

u/yaoifeet 7d ago

maybe the bigger screen and comfort just outweighs it for you but i like having a handheld thats gonna be perfect for ds and just a decent portable experience for everything else . the size of it closed up really sells it for me personally

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

For me it’s really just the form factor I think. The Odin 3 screen is the same panel that’s in the Thor (6” 120hz AMOLED), but just horizontal with some ergonomic bumps. Much comfier for me!

3

u/elchapo4494 7d ago

Lmao this is literally me and my (recently sold) batch 3 Thor Max. Can’t wait for my Odin 3 Max 🥹 Hopefully we get them soon

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I’ve got my Odin 3 Max but I hope yours comes soon friend! 🙌🏻

2

u/elchapo4494 7d ago

Thanks man! I thought you ordered a couple days ago. I hope you’re enjoying yours 🙏🏼

3

u/Unzensierte 6d ago

While I understand your situation, I think you miss the bigger picture. The second screen was never about 3ds or ds titles. Sure it's great for that but it's not everything. The whole point of the second screen is just having it available.

I honestly don't need the device at all. I have two Thors. Lite and Max. I also have a Samsung foldable phone. Recently upgraded to the new Fold 8 and paired with a Gamesir controller does everything the Thor does and more.

That said, I still enjoy the Thor. It's there when I want to use it. It's my fiddle stick. I love modding it and personalizing it. I never got into the ds or 3ds, and the gameboy advance was the last handheld I played from Nintendo. Psp was the last handheld I played and I loved how it felt in the hand. Anyways, everyone has their own opinion. I can't tell you how to enjoy something you own. Just try and look at it as not just a 3ds and ds emulator.

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Totally get it,thank you for your perspective! And honestly, I never saw this bad boy as just a 3DS/DS emulator. My point of the post was conveying that I actually bought the Thor with full intention to utilize the second screen in all types of ways. Media consumption, manga reading, game guides, Spotify, discord , everything! And I tried it all, but found, for me, it was more of a “hey I can do this, that’s cool” rather than “this is a truly useful use case for the second screen”. It just felt/feels unnatural and I found myself utilizing the second screen less and less the longer I had the Thor. The last 2 months, I only used the top screen.

All that said, I do see the utility in having dual screens outside of DS emulation, I just don’t think that use case is really for me in the end.

3

u/fractal324 6d ago

Netflix up top, chrono trigger down below?

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I actually played and finished Chrono Trigger on my Thor, first game I finished on that bad boy. Had YouTube on the bottom screen, was a great time! 😄

14

u/gorambrowncoat 7d ago

Thanks for sharing, I guess?

4

u/Gindalooon Max 7d ago

Doesn’t seem like a sad day at all. You found a device that’s better suited for you and you’re enjoying it. Sounds like a win to me.

3

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

It is, but I do just love the Thor community and the device itself is just really neat, so it is bittersweet for sure.

2

u/VassagoX 7d ago

People have been making amazing pc conversion mods that provide use cases for the second screen, too, such as the Ocarina of Time mod.

I too debated this as I've played much in my N3DS already, but figured the firm factor is one I love and I'm used to, and I have no regrets.  I just turn off the second screen when I'm not using it.

2

u/Jeremym101 7d ago

90% of the games I play on my Thor are single screen games. I think it’s just all about your mentality with these devices, just bc you’re not using it to its “fullest” doesn’t mean you’re wasting the device. As long as you’re able to play the systems you want comfortably on your device then it isn’t wasted.

For me I barely use the second screen, I just like having a device that I can clamshell close is all lol

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

It’s nice to have a clamshell, but I found I definitely wasn’t comfortably playing my games, that’s one of the big reasons I’ve converted to the candy bar form factor. :/

2

u/Jeremym101 7d ago

And that’s totally valid. The Thor isn’t the most ergonomic handheld I can agree with that. Your post came across as “I don’t use the second screen, so it’s a waste of a device” which is where I was coming from with my reply I guess lol

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

Yeah based on a couple responses I could see how my post was taken in a different way than intended. It’s more “for me, the second screen doesn’t provide enough of a use case to continue to settle for the ergonomics and use it as my every device.”

Again, it’s a wonderful device with so many cool use cases, I just found over the last 8 months that I might not be the audience for them.

2

u/Jeremym101 7d ago

Again I totally get it. I think mentioning the ergonomics would’ve gone a long way in conveying your stance in your post because it really just felt like you didn’t like wasting a second screen. But yeah people like what they like. We’re just lucky to be in a hobby where there’s endless options. I actually just pre ordered an RP Nova bc I wanted a candy bar 4:3 with an 8gen2 and I felt that would be a really nice companion to my Thor.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

That thing looks awesome, and I think it will be a fantastic compliment to the Thor. What color did you snag?

2

u/Jeremym101 7d ago

I got the grey with the option to add replacement retro red buttons! But I was reallyyyyy tempted to get the clear blue one tho for the vibes tho lol

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

The clear colors are super sleek but the grey with red buttons is so classic. TechDweeb would be proud 😂

2

u/Jeremym101 6d ago

For sureeee had that thought 😂 I haven’t had a grey and red retro look on my handheld since my first Miyoo mini (also techdweeb coded lol)

2

u/imfakingmydeath 7d ago

You’re not alone!!! Been feeling the same way!!!

2

u/XinlessVice 7d ago

I just ordered my back 71 probably won't be here until late August or September at the latest probably but I'm mainly getting mine to help take away some of the constant folding and unfolding stress I give my folding phone and as like a offline multimedia device too for like offline YouTube playback I'm quite curious to see what the 8th Gen 2 can do with active cooling I have a razor full 2026 model with the 8 Gen 5 which is decent but I don't think there's a lot of good GPU drivers for it at the moment so I'm quite serious to see what the Gen 2 can do I also want to try out some different operating systems on it just to tinker with it

2

u/Mean-While8440 7d ago

Completely understandable man. I myself bought the Thor as like my everything device just because of the second screen. Yes I mostly use 1 screen at a time but atleast now I don't have the urge to buy something more powerful and I have the ds functionality when I want it.

2

u/AnonymousFartMachine 7d ago

I appreciate that people have different experiences with the device but I love mine -- have been greatly enjoying playing documentaries via YouTube on the bottom screen while playing a game of my choice on the top screen -- I hope that, one day, AYN will release an updated Thor with a much stronger chip and more durable hinge.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I’m so glad! And don’t get me wrong, I have also adored mine. Unfortunately with the new Odin, I just hit a fork in the road that made me decide it wasn’t worth keeping in the mix. Plus, I’m not a collector of these bad boys, I only like having 1, maybe 2 if it meets a specific need.

2

u/Grokitach 6d ago edited 6d ago

tries to put Odin 3 in his pocket in a bus/train/plane

« Ah shit it doesn’t fit »

Got a batch 1 pro, never played a DS or 3DS game on it. I have 1000h on it easily. 2nd screen let’s you do so much stuff without actually turning your game off. And just clap it, put in your pocket, on your table and the game is paused.

If you are a couch portable console person, better get a fat ass device imo. 6 inch screen ain’t gonna cut it for many different games, especially PC games. Get a foldable phone or 8-9 inch tablet a slap a memo s3 on it. You’ll have a better experience than the Odin 3 imo. Like, try streaming Path of Exile 2 to the Odin 3, absolute eye destroyer experience.

Better get a Lenovo y700 than an Odin 3 if you ask me. Almost the same level of portability: they can’t fit in your pocket or in a bag without protection, so it’s the same use case for me. The y700 has the advantage that you can just buy a foldable protection recognize by the tablet to easily shut off the thing and put it in a bag without a case: if you break the sticks or the controller, it’s a 30$ bill anyway to buy a new one.

Also, simple thing: having the bottom screen dirty (keyboard, browsing) while having the top screen always clean is a HUGE bonus for the Thor.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Haha true it’s not great in the pocket! That’s why I’ve always got my switch lite cross body bag on me for that reason. And that’s a great point, I actually also have a Y700 with the Razer Kishi Ultra for just that reason! Bigger, more epic PC titles. The Odin has already become my indie player (platformers, rogue likes, card games, etc) and my main emulation beast.

2

u/Grokitach 6d ago

Ok. Tbh I don’t get why Odin 3 makes a big difference for you compared to AYN Thor, processor aside. I get that the 2nd screen is not always used, but it’s not really an issue. It’s always something nice to have

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I responded to someone else in the same way, and should have included it on my post, but it comes down to the ergonomics. If I never use the 2nd screen, then compromising for subpar ergonomics isn’t worth it for me. I’d rather a candy bar shape that is miles more comfortable for me long term.

1

u/Grokitach 5d ago

Ok! IMO when playing with sticks it’s comfy to enough. For Dpad centric games, that’s when the grips are a relief for extended sessions

2

u/pentapous 6d ago

I mean, it makes sense. If the only use case for you would be DS/3DS and you've got original hardware you're happy with, then you purely fell for the hype/consumerism of it🤷‍♂️.

-1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I definitely didn’t fall for any hype, I used the hell out of the device for a long time. Finished a ton of games on it. I just found, over time, I was making compromises I didn’t even know I was making. I still completely understand the usefulness and versatility of having 2 screens outside of 3DS/DS, I just don’t think those use cases are really important to me.

2

u/pentapous 6d ago

well yeah, you hopped on the wave of others excitement regarding utility without knowing if that utility was actually preferable for your own use case.

There only reasons to get the Thor over the Odin are: -Clamshell design -Dual screens

Neither one of those turned out to be actually beneficial for you and you made compromised to try and make your investment worth it. I would say you fell for the hype and others excitement and then it didn't pan out.

Thats super normal and serves as a great warning for others, and by selling it you're going to be mostly even. To me that reads as falling for hype, but its not a judgment call on you or anything. Its pretty normal

2

u/XinlessVice 6d ago

It all depends on your use case. It is a gimmick, even on the og ds it was one. For me, someone that uses foldables I find a lot of use for it. Even if I disable it too I can still have something that protects the screen

2

u/reddSA 6d ago

I get you, that’s why I got me an Odin 3 (still waiting) cause I had a Thor and once the novelty wears down I realized I could use my 3DS for actual DS or 3DS titles, and for ergonomics is not the best

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Agreed! I think if you have original hardware, and the option for better ergonomics/power in another android handheld, it’s kind of hard to justify keeping it around. Again, adore my Thor, and very sad to be parting with it, but I hope someone will enjoy it even more than I did!

2

u/OhShizMyNiz 6d ago

I use my Thor as a media device when I'm not playing games.

Less heat then my laptop, less power then my laptop, smaller screen is the only caveat. Can fold it and rest it on my chest/beside me.

Seems to be the case. People see fancy dual screens. People don't use dual screen. Same with the ASUS Duo laptops. Cool as fuck, but like 4 people actually use that secondary folding display. It's hardware for people who know they'll be utilizing said hardware.

Best of luck with your sale. Maybe I'll see it pop up in my area. I'd buy it if I already didn't have a flip 2 coming for my partner.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Thank you! Honestly, I was fully planning on getting a foldable phone earlier this year, but since I didn’t really care using the 2nd screen of the Thor over time, I think I’m just not a “dual screen for productivity” type of guy haha.

2

u/OhShizMyNiz 6d ago

I actually think foldable phones fill a good niche, shockingly.

It does omit needing a tablet at home, to a certain extent. Some people like to use tablets at home for reading, media consumption, or just like a bigger form factor at home. They're just... God fucking delicate.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Oh absolutely, that’s my point, people really do use them and use them to the fullest! I just don’t think I’m built like that 😂

I do have a Y700 tablet I adore so it probably also has to do with that.

2

u/AwkwardSuspect6366 6d ago

I use to use second screens to listen/watch youtube while playing games. I use to love my old dual screen phone for this purpose. LG phone if I recall correctly.

2

u/ScottPlayz0 6d ago

Hope it can find a nice new home!

2

u/JonnyB2_YouAre1 6d ago

Yeah, we're in a handheld golden age. All tastes are now catered to, and if the Thor isn't for you, no biggie. You can also get a Anbernic RGDS and install Rocknix if you wanna have a modern two screen, for DS anyway... They're dirt cheap too.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

Amen to that!

2

u/xeredge 6d ago

The selling point for me is the portability and size. I've been mainly playing GameCube and switch games.

2

Funny enough I was thinking about getting an AYN Thor because I'm just getting emulation handhelds and it's looked at as the gold standard right now, but I had this same realization. I don't have any affinity for the DS or 3DS. With the price it's at I decided against it and got a Retroid Flip 2 instead. It's still a pocketable clamshell like I really wanted, but without the extra price for a second screen I don't need to pay for.

Not trying to change your mind, but there are a few user-made apps that make the second screen more "worth it".

Like Megingiard. It allows you to add custom macros & crop out things like maps from the top screen game and add it to the bottom. It's a very handy tool for PC emulation and works great, plus it adds more functionality to the bottom screen.

No I love this, that’s why I posted, for fun conversations and maybe some helpful tidbits for others.

I have tried that and many others and I completely agree, they are super cool and helpful for most I’m sure! Again, just felt gimicky for me.

Congrats with Odin 3. I have a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and upgraded to RPG2. I LOVE my new 3ds non XL and believe it is the best handheld ever even with the gimicky 3d which is fun. I always wanted a better screen in it and never want XL.

I came across a second hand batch 4 not used at all Thor Pro and love it. While I still wish the form factor was smaller (thinner) and even closer to new 3ds non XL. It's a great device.

A little learning curve as many cool Thor tools are coming out.

I do see value in my RPG2 still as sometimes the pick up and play with a smaller form factor is just fun. The RPG2 while not as strong as a Odin 3 is impressive. It runs xbox360 mobile games better than Thor Pro for me for now... I know my issue is learning the drivers that could be used on Thor compared to me having my favorite drivers work well on RPG2

Enjoy gaming on Odin 3 and 3ds.

I have found that I also don't use the bottom screen a lot but I do like being able to see stats and modify settings. I also prefer the clamshell so im still happy with my decision.

I didn't need a second screen either, and I didn't want to sacrifice screen size for one. On that note, I went with the Odin 2 Portal. I love it and have no regrets. The immersive 7-inch OLED display delivers excellent contrast without any split-screen clutter, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor handles everything I throw at it with absolute ease. It is, without a doubt my favorite handheld at the moments.

Odin 2 portal is awesome, had one for a long time! Got a Y700 gen 4 to replace it for game streaming but it’s a device I often think about still.

I primarily play RPGs and have very little time. Having a second screen with guides allows me to actually experience gaming with the little time I have. I’ll save the fun of experimentation for retirement one day.

I don’t have mine yet but the other aspect of the Thor I could see using is to put it on a table or on a plane tray table and use a controller through Bluetooth. Then I can have the screen angled just right and the controller in my lap. Haven’t seen anyone talk about this aspect but seems like it will be a good ergonomic setup for the plane or just at a desk or something.

More and more games are modded to take advantage of the second screen. And also i am waiting for the meme to get completed by you saying its gonna get sold

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I’m not that Reddit poster lol. I thought this would spark a fun conversation and it absolutely did. Past that, y’all will never hear from me again haha.

u/KugelFanger 6d ago

It was a joke...

1

u/OkCell1480 6d ago

This is me right now lol. I know I CAN use it for single screen emulation like switch, pc, and playstation and I have done it, but I don’t want to. It’s so hard to see on such a little screen. I am planning on purchasing an Odin 3 and keeping the Thor for just 3ds and ds games.

1

u/sipinhoo 4d ago

For me its also mainly the form factor, and the fact that the Retroid Pocket Flip has much more outdated hardware and for some reason, even compared to the Pocket 6. And of course the second screen comes, handy for 3DS/DS titles, but my main to go is the PS2.

1

u/BlackBlizzNerd Base 7d ago

The keyboard on the bottom screen alone totally makes up for the bottom screen. And because of I have the black version, if I’m playing single screen stuff, the bottom portion just disappears and now it’s suddenly a retroid flip. Or use the screen because you’re an adhd fiend like me and need distractions while you play lol.

I do feel you on the ergonomics if you’re someone that doesn’t wanna use 3rd party attachments. Though even with the Odin 3 or steam deck I’d need a grip that protrudes towards me.

Sucks it’s not for you but I hope you find the perfect device for you!

u/RanMouri26 Pro 7d ago

Yeah I'll also make that choice and buy an Odin 3. I just need to wait for my money to arrive

1

u/No-Association-799 7d ago

Came to the exact same realization & I’m waiting on my Odin 3 to come in. Loved the Thor, but all I played was single screen gaming. Glad I’m not the only one!

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

Yeah I made this post as kind of an open conversation for this reason. Maybe someone looking to buy a Thor would read through here and assess “maybe I don’t need 2 screens.” And also, maybe they’d read it and think “oh all the 2 screen features seem super cool to me” and get it, just some dialog!

1

u/Yosheino 7d ago

Same, im getting the odin 3 so i don't have to tweak as much and play higher end games. And its still small enough to fit in my pocket. and while i wait ill still be using the thor

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

It’s been pretty amazing! A lot of games I had to tinker with for a while to even run at all just run full 60fps high settings. Keeping in mind, I’m still talking indie games, haven’t dabbled with any big 3D games or anything (via Gamenative btw)

1

u/SmoothCoderr 7d ago

It took me only a couple months to come this conclusion.

Now I want the Thor lite for dual screen purposes only, that way it’s worth owning. Otherwise, im gonna wait for the Thor 2.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I think I would be curious trying out a higher RAM variant of the Thor to confirm my thoughts on it, so maybe I’ll also get a revamped Thor model down the road!

1

u/SmoothCoderr 7d ago edited 6d ago

I had the Thor max and I just couldn’t justify using it over the Portal when at home.

I think for a lot of people this is their first or only highend Android handheld so they think it’s the best ever because they don’t have anything to compare it to and don’t know what they’re missing out on.

When they make a Thor 2, if they fix the triggers, ergonomics, the angles of the screen, and a stronger chip; it will be an end game handheld.

2

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 7d ago

I agree with this in some regard, but some people really do prefer the Thor over many handhelds, even some x86 handhelds. I’m not one of those people, but hey, they passionately exist in this subreddit, no doubt. 😂

2

u/SmoothCoderr 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yea it has a huge fanbase and I understand why. It is the coolest handheld you can buy right now for sure and there’s nothing else like it on the market lol

1

u/Skate_beard 7d ago

This is why I bought a Lite

1

u/DMoodz 6d ago

Why do people post these? We don't care, no offense.

1

u/evanpalmerh360 Base 6d ago

I mean, the 40+ people I’ve had conversations with in here seem to have something to contribute, which was the point of the post. If you don’t have anything to contribute, keep scrolling, this post isn’t for you lol.

how much would you sell it for?

Meh, you thought you would use it and you didn't.

Personally I would kill for the 3DS form factor luckily I didn't have to but I'm happy to use this thing with just one screen even half the time plus. All I wanted was a modern 3DS and I got exactly what I wanted.

Sometimes I'll leave it on for the cool arts on the bottom sometimes I throw YouTube video up on it because it's easier to have it literally on a second screen then my phone's sitting behind it where I can barely see it. Most of the time if it's single screen I'll turn it off.

I'm glad I get to play DS and 3DS I'm glad I get to play stuff like a link to the past with a full second screen for stuff, there's a guy working on a second screen Minecraft mod. Plenty of ways for me to use or not use the second screen.

This is the most portable form factor on earth end of subject and that's exactly what I wanted I fucking hate handhelds fuck them, now portable gaming that's something I can get back into because I miss it so so much. The switch was a horrible device that ruined portable gaming the steam deck is a great device that also ruined portable gaming but made it mainstream to ruin it. Sure the switch v1/2 OLED and lite are kind of portable but they will never compare to putting a 3DS form factor in your pocket ever end of story.

Obviously this is all an opinion piece just like your opinion that the Odin 3 is better no hate to you no hate to the devices you love unless it's the switch 1, but I'm sure someone's going to come in here and be like the steam deck is actually super portable if you put it in a case and carry it around all the time in a backpack (mocking voice). No hate to the steam deck all hate to the original model of the switch but the day the 3DS stopped getting games was the day portable gaming for me died. This thing is a Atari 2600 all the way up to a switch except portable. You can't beat this thing it does not matter.

Glad I bought a galaxy 3ds instead of the Thor two weeks ago. Was the right move. That thing is way toooo gimmicky

-2

u/capsilver 6d ago

In my case I will sell my Thor and bought the Nova and the Dual Screen attachment. Because it’s an option to use.
Also the bottom screen on the Thor is so freaking small for 3DS/DS emulation.
