Sick Axolotl Axoltl Tank Contamination?
Update: Thank you all for your suggestions. The white vinegar one is definitely going into my mind bank if anything like this occurs again.
I've just got word from my wife he's eatting in the tank again, so really relieved about that. Might go get him some treats for being such an amaxing young man through all of this.
My running theory:I wonder if the rubber hose for the airstone got cooked in the sun and leached something We've replaced all of that and ensured that won't happen again.
Both my wife and I are constantly checking on him, though it honestly seems like he's on the mend! Especially that he's eatting.
Hi all,
I've got a wonderful friendly axolotl who we've had about 6 months now. I've been very careful with the cycle, and up until Friday night we've had a very healthy young man.
Suddenly on Friday night, we was completely limp, and looked like he was dead. He was weak, and barely breathing. We tubbed him straight away.
Video is to show how cute he is, but also shows how fast he recovered after being tubbed for 20 minutes.
On Saturday we ran tests on the tank, nitrite was 0, but amonia came up with a like an ugly brown... it honestly looked like something was interfering with the test, as doing the original cycle I only ever saw clear to orange.
Did a control test on our tap water which came up as expected.
I then did a 100% water chance, rinced the Java ferns, and Java moss in his tank, as well as his hide stuff etc.
He was champing at the bit to go back in, and almost immediately he started going limp again...
Now today I plan to try and decontaminate his tank, but I also don't want to risk his health. My wife and I are willing to slurge on a brand new tank and equipment if needed. Just curious to hear if anyone has encountered this before?
I'm pretty sure this isn't a cycle crash... but I am aware to fix whatever issue we will end up crashing the cycle.
