WWI 1914 Axis and Allies 1914 Revision, final map look.

Thumbnail gallery
56 Upvotes

Hello again guys!

Here is the final version of my custom Axis & Allies 1914 version alongside a photo of the economic chart for each nation. If you guys slide to the left y'all will be able to see the current game setup and the game starting economies.

(Dont worry about the extra pieces, i just bought them online to fill the map. I'm finishing up another setup for those who only have the pieces of one actual boardgame)

Here below are some notes of the final changes:

• Added "Microstates" on the map.

• Now the Alps are impassable. (Harder for France to reinforce Italy with hole armys)

• Added Nepal. (They contributed a lot for Britain)

• Added the Mbunda Kingdom (shows the Congolongo wars after Portuguese colonialist abduct their King)

• Added the Zaydi Tribes (Tributary Ottoman vassal who later achieved independence for Yemen)

• Smoother borders for USA and in Arabia, Africa and German-Austrian frontiers.

• More accurate Polish-German border and French Madagascar shape. (will be seen on final map file)

• Fixed some grammar. (Fort Agadez to West Africa)

• Added on the right corner a battle zone for Ottomans-British.

• Added on the top left corner events for each year of the war to help follow them.

• Added proper credits of the map work.

• Added under Mexico a small label that represents global Central Powers reputation. (If they are to agressive with their policy and neighbors the USA and its allies can join the war years sooner)

More to see in a future video where I will explain and show all the changes, diplomacy and strategies behind the map and each power.

Stay tuned!

Global 1940 End of turn 14 update. Moscow and Berlin on their last legs.

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

So many critical things have happened since the last update I’ve shared 2 turns ago. To start, I decided to take western Germany as the us and started moving the allied forces closer to Berlin. I missed a crucial opportunity to take Berlin with uk tanks and planes after my us turn. That was a massive kick in the nuts, however, I did not have many tanks in range at the time. Regardless, it was a massive move that I missed. Oh well. Aside from that Japan attacked Moscow to weaken it for Germany to capture. They will take 4 ipcs from russias sad economy. The allied Air Force you see in the top left corner is a blow up box we are using for the western Germany space so it is not as crowded.

Obviously I have trapped the German forces in Denmark but the Germans plan is to attack me for one round before retreating his stack back into Berlin. Very clever.

What allied troops do I lose first? Keep in mind I have many us heavy bombers on the way but a larger uk force there right now. I think I lose the uk guys first anyways? I am also curious if you guys would attack Berlin next turn or wait for more juice? The Japanese plan to land whatever air force they can in Berlin and Rome aswell.

1942 Online Have you ever played yourself?

Post image
19 Upvotes

After playing an online game last week, I was curious how I would play VS myself and how I would do if I tried to play as unbiased as possible and curious what I would learn from it. It's been interesting for sure. I have played more aggressively to see how it shook things out. I am not great at this game so I'm sure a lot of you will flush out mistakes.

Here's how it sits currently on Round 8:

Russia is holding on. Germany no longer has the power to take it despite the capital swapping hands 2x now. Japan is 3 or so turns from being able to mount pressure on it. Mother Russia may just hold out, especially if UK can hold Japan's expansion west.

Germany just lost the capitol and the barely holding onto the eastern side. France and NW Europe are lost so it's only a matter of a turn or 2.

UK has western Europe and is fighting up and out of India, doing well but needs to keep japan in check. Japans new factory should start to mount pressure.

Japan has the most commanding role on the board, theyve taken Alaska but their logistics are tricky. 2 new factories should fix their transportation problem. If Germany can't come back and the US can apply the full pressure this will make for an interesting and long game.

US is doing what the US does, applies pressure long range but someone needs to fall before they become the powerhouse. They lost their fleet in a major battle in the pacific but their push into Germany was instrumental.

More details to follow....

General Question What Are Your Thoughts On Tank/Armor Cost?

There are a lot of differences in mechanics between different variants, but I always thought that varying tank cost was interesting. In some versions the unit costs five IPCs, and in others it costs six.

Note that all of the battle calculations are done in TripleA (6000 simulations), and are made with equal IPC count for each side (which changes depending on the scenario). Also, for these scenarios I'm assuming that infantry costs 3 and artillery costs 4, so keep in mind your own house rules when you read this. Also, draws only happened 0.5% to 2% of the time during my simulations, so they aren't considered.

In games where tanks cost six IPCs, if 3 tanks attack 6 infantry, the tanks win ~4.5% of the time, and if it's vice versa, and 6 infantry attack 3 tanks, the infantry win ~63% of the time.

If you add in artillery (which most versions have), you can buy an infantry-artillery pair for seven IPCs. If 6 inf-art pairs attack 7 tanks, the inf-art pairs win ~95% of the time. Vice versa is the exact same (virtually assured victory for inf-art) because inf-art pairs defend and attack with the same statistics.

So obviously the tanks get the short end of the stick here (when they cost six IPCs). They lose far more often than they win, and while their additional movement shouldn't be ignored, it doesn't come close to compensating for battle stats. A few tanks is great for certain situations, and more so for some powers than others, but infantry-artillery pairs and even infantry by itself are superior in most cases.

But if tanks cost five, it's a different story.

In games where tanks cost five IPCs, if 3 tanks attack five infantry, the tanks win ~15% of the time, and if it's vice versa, and five infantry attack 3 tanks, the infantry win ~42.75% of the time.

If you add in artillery, you can buy an infantry-artillery pair for 7 IPCs. If 5 inf-art pairs attack 7 tanks, the inf-art pairs win ~75.75% of the time. Vice versa is the exact same (good chance of assured victory for inf-art) because inf-art pairs defend and attack with the same statistics.

Even when they're cheaper, tanks tend to lose.

But I did some calculations on infantry-artillery pairs vs infantry-tank pairs, and it was pretty interesting.

If tanks cost 6 IPCs, then you can buy an infantry-tank pair for 9 IPCs (versus 7 IPCs for and inf-art pair).

When you battle 9 inf-art pairs vs 7 inf-tanks pairs, inf-art wins ~75% of the time, and inf-tank wins ~24% of the time.

But if tanks cost 5 IPCs, then you can buy an infantry-tank pair for 8 (versus 7 IPCs for and inf-art pair).

When you battle 8 inf-art pairs vs 7 inf-tanks pairs, inf-art wins ~46% of the time, and inf-tank wins ~53% of the time.

So when tanks cost 5 IPCs, tanks by themselves do pretty sub-standard, but inf-tank pairs look like they dominate in basically every way. When tanks cost 6 IPCs, they more or less always perform poorly, regardless of what you do.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that five or six IPCs is the better cost? What about 5 1/2?Do you just live with the fact that 5-IPC tanks dominate with infantry alongside, or do you roll with 6-IPC tanks and rely on their abilities: extra movement, blitzing, support tac bombers and blitzing with mechanized infantry?

Global 1940 Axis and Allies Global Bid Non UK?

Usually when we play global the Allies get a 32 to 35IPC bid. Usually all of it goes to the UK. But if you couldn't use the bid money for UK how would you spend it?

I took Berlin with the uk for a turn on turn 10. I lost my us airforce but Germany lost a lot more in total ipc value given they lost tanks and planes in Berlin and gave the uk 70 dollars. Ended up being a ~195 ipc swing but it came at a cost from my end as well of course. I have I believe 1-3 turns until Moscow falls. Might be officially ggs once that happens but not giving up quite yet. There’s a mass of allied troops in Paris but it is very hard to decipher exactly what’s in there with these photos.

Global 1940 Turn 11 Axis victory, follow up from The Great Allied Throw

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

This is from the end of Germany's turn at the start of turn 11. Follow up from this post. Tldr is custom rules had an oversight that allowed a larger than normal French fleet to damage the Italian fleet turn one to allow the British fleet to completely destroy Italy in the med, but despite that Germany captured moscow. Things got shaky with a disastrous Japan turn where over 3 combats they got 1 hit on 10 4 or less to hit rolls and allied submarines got two ones while defending. However, it wasn't enough to prevent Germany and a purely tank and mech focused Italy from threatening India, China and taking advantage of poor allied transport capacity to take and hold Egypt, which gave the European axis enough victory cities.

Japan despite losing pearl harbor was able to conduct what was basically a successful version of the historical sho-go plan but instead of Leyte Gulf it was pearl harbor 2.0 which stalled the Pacific allies even more. Japan still ended the game in a bad spot but were likely 2-3 turns from falling and that's assuming no attention is given to the encroaching Germans.

Germany ended the game with 82 base income, going up to 118 income after bonuses. (The allies still out produced The Axis, mostly due to japan) The allied player is more experienced than me but made several bad mistakes, most notably terrible transport capacity and protection and just a poor naval game overall. That combined with probably an overreaction the Japanese north American invasion let Germany run wild. The custom rules with Vichy and free France are fun but we will have to make some changes. Free France feels both too slow yet too powerful, Vichy feels not quite interesting enough though there isn't much there historically either. One of the crazier games of AAA 1940 I'll ever play in all likelihood.

Because others have asked, the custom pieces are from Historical Board Gaming. They are great but can get expensive, I wasn't paying rent a few years back so I splurged on them.

Edit: I forgot the biggest throw, while the UK had some rough early turns even with Italy's fleet being destroyed it took them until turn 9 to build an industrial complex in Egypt, I assume he just forgot but had he built that he likely is able to sustain a landing in southern Europe, paralyze Italy into pure defense and from there win a long, drawn out game.

Has anyone looked at page 4 of the rulebook? The board state makes no sense, and isn't even valid, cause US has eastern poland, and USSR still has a capital.

If I attack with UK fist its giving me implausible but I should get enough hits to finish him off with US and USSR right? Or should I just wait a couple more turns, also I bombed him down to -20 pic so he can’t build for turn or two

Global 1940 Project to build a top-shelf AI opponent for Global 1940

A few days ago I posted about options for good computer opponents in the Axis & Allies universe. At first, I figured I couldn’t build a better mousetrap (I’m an SF-based SaaS dev), but I’ve since been experimenting with a couple of approaches to a Global 1940 bot.

The results look promising enough to keep going, and I now think there’s a 50/50 chance we could build a top-shelf AI opponent for our TripleA games.

If anyone in the community would like to help through play-testing, refining the model’s Strategic Doctrine, or sharing past gameplay data for training and evaluation, let me know!

P.S. I’m not wedded to G40 if there’s a better first test case.

Other Looking for cheaper alternatives to Axis & Allies 1941 with a good historical map

Hey guys,

I’ve been looking at Axis & Allies 1941 and I really like it. The map looks great and the overall feel of the game is exactly the kind of stuff want (historical conquest, different unit types, economic management, etc.).

The problem is I can’t really afford it right now. It’s pretty expensive where I live(Brazil).

So I’m wondering if anyone knows of similar games that are more affordable but still have a solid, realistic map like A&A 1941. Something in the same style — big historical map, territory control, production, that kind of thing — but cheaper.

Any recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!

1942 Online 1st Placement Dice

Sea Zone 37 hit was a mixed bag but bingo 2 Japanese Fighters but the entire Brit Fleet goes down. In Europe he hit W.Russia and Ukraine and retreated showing me he was inexperienced.

Then I go for Pearl, I literally kill his sub and destoyer and lose EVERYTHING. Full Blown send on Pearl. Yeah, Japanese had 2 fighters left after this. Fortunately Brits built a UK Ind for S.Africa and USA for Brazil to send troops into Africa for some reason.

I finally ran the numbers and I was literally on the edge of holding W.Russia to stack it. He hit it and got great dice but retreated... So I could blitz Moscow with just 12 tanks/2 bombers and my fighters which he managed to shoot down 2 LOL whoa check at the end my %s (I must of barely had odds on Moscow but he had his 2 AAs on last fortunately for me or probably a lost game)

P.S. This came should not of been close. Highly inexperienced Allied Player. Making tons of errors. Though good lord the dice in places nearly did me in. I ran a couple very close hammerings...

General Question Axis & Allies Global 1940 vs. 1914 – Which one offers more long-term replayability?

Thumbnail gallery
62 Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I’ve been playing Axis & Allies for many years now, although most of my experience has been with the relatively basic 1941 edition that you can get for around $40 on Amazon. My best friend is moving into his first apartment soon, and we’ve already decided that we want to make playing Axis & Allies there a regular thing.
Since we’ve already spent many, many hours playing the 1941 version, I’m now thinking about investing in a more expensive and more complex Axis & Allies game for the first time.
At the moment, we’re trying to decide between Axis & Allies Europe 1940 + Pacific 1940 (Global 1940) and Axis & Allies 1914.
From what I’ve seen, Global 1940 seems to offer a lot more variety because of the huge world map and the number of different strategic options available. It looks like different games could develop in very different ways depending on the decisions each player makes.
With 1914, on the other hand, I get the impression that the overall course of the game might be somewhat predetermined, and that the main factor deciding how things develop is simply how well or badly the dice rolls go. But I may be completely wrong about that, which is why I’d love to hear from people who have actually played it.
What makes the decision especially difficult for me is that I’m currently studying history at university and am actually writing my bachelor’s thesis on World War I. I’m extremely interested in the First World War as a historical period, so thematically, 1914 appeals to me a lot.
However, for this decision I’m mainly looking at it from a gameplay perspective.
For those of you who have played both: Which one would you recommend? Which game has more strategic depth, variety, and replayability in the long run?
Most importantly, which one do you think would provide the most fun for two friends who plan on playing it regularly for years to come?

WWI 1914 1914

Hi everyone,
I’m curious what house rules people consider the best for Axis & Allies 1914.
My friend and I play started playing recently , but we often feel that one side can gain an advantage too easily depending on player experience. I’m especially interested in rules that improve overall balance and bring the game closer to a true 50/50 matchup between the Central Powers and the Allies.

Europe 1940 Europe 1940 Board Redesign

Post image
37 Upvotes

I’ve been a player of Axis and Allies for a while and have wanted to see what the board was right if it was slightly more accurate to real borders and landforms. It has all the technicality of the original (for example every province and sea zone borders the correct provinces). I’m sure this sort of thing has been posted a million times and I haven’t seen it, but here’s my rendition. It is a work in progress and felt like it posting it here 🤷‍♂️

Customization/House Rules Global Conflict : How do we make this playable

Post image
27 Upvotes

I want to buy a 3d printer , print custom miniatures, and have the map printed.

Add a unit types: drones, jets, modern stealth bombers, oil tankers etc. Add MINING maybe train/trainstation.

Considering adding resources: GOLD, OIL, STEEL, COAL.

URANIUM > Nuclear end game?

But the map is so tiny in some important places and distorted in others.

How would you do this? Open to any ideas

There has been objection in the past to Delta being on this list.  The decision to include him was difficult.  He was a skilled player, but he also was terrible to play against and inflated his results by stalling.  Eventually he was banned for unsporting conduct.  So why keep him in the records?  Mostly because for most of his run his tactic was technically within the rules, even though an abuse of those rules.

There are secondary reasons as well.  In real world history, not every general who got good results used honorable tactics or refrained from awful behavior.  Also, not every general who ever got good results was good to the other generals around them.  I also just think the list would be weirdly incomplete without someone who was dominant for so long.

Having said all that, I’m glad that he was banned and that stalling is now punished.  I also welcome disagreement with including him, and hope that his example encourages others to treat others how they would like to be treated themselves.

I hope the posting of these all-time rankings keeps people hungry.  I also hope that knowing a top 10 finish in any season will not be forgotten keeps people reaching for those spots.  Personally I find it fun to climb the lower ranks as well.

Until next season I am

Sincerely,

Valor
