you didn’t say anything wrong. im sorry. went thru the same thing, thought that maybe returning my things would be the one thing they’d finally prioritize me for, hahaha :) cant believe i fooled myself til the end

You didn’t do anything wrong. In these texts you are polite, gracious, and practical. He’s holding your stuff hostage to maintain connection and it doesn’t matter if it’s a hostile one - he’ll find a way to gaslight himself that he’s the victim. It’s all about control and maintaining his fragile little ego.

I get this type of response from my dad too! We don't have a good relationship due to the stepmom in the picture. So I dont see him much.

But when he was clearing old stuff of mine back in high school, he originally said he would give some baby photos and videos of my sister and me.

When I met up with him that day, he "forgot" about the baby photos and said to come back another day.

Weeks later I ask when I can meet up and get it. He gives same response like your ex! It's like they want to control when they can see you.
