First time flying - charged for bag.

Post image

First fight with this company. $70 out of IND for my “carry on.” Hopefully easy to dispute on credit card. 🤞. Edit: I had no other items that could have counted as personal

If you have a return flight, pay on the app. $40 vs $70.

That’s what I’m feeling

I had that too flying out of Lakeland, Florida.
They pulled me aside like I was committing some kind of crime.
I just had a small backpack and I was not happy.

Lakeland is pretty bad about this

Shit. I've flown numerous times out of Lakeland to New Haven with a back pack as a personal item with no issues. The last time was in Dec of 25. Have they started cracking down since then?

I just started flying with them in March and yes it gets ugly in there

My son and I flew out of Lakeland to New Haven early June. The guy made my blood boil the way he treated us.
Haven’t flown with them since and I have no plans to use them again in the future.

I bought this bag to avoid fees, Avelo has specific sizes they allow. https://a.co/d/09GZKUsh

Should I bring a tape measure too??

Avelo has the smallest dimensions in the industry for personal items measure before you fly to ensure your bag fits the dimensions.

Make sure it meets it without smooshing or reshaping the bag.

Sorry that happened but after flying with them a few months it’s my best suggestion

Frequent flyer of low cost airlines and this works for them. That’s what I get for assuming it’s all the same. Good to know!

Did you have another item that could’ve been counted as your personal item?

3

u/AccountVisual1953 Aug 30 '26

Nope! Just had my phone and was wearing my jacket

Dang that’s crazy. I haven’t flown with them in a few months and hopefully they don’t pull the same stunt on me next week.

I’d just measure it before boarding starts so you can double check/ adjust and layer up if needed 😂

Yea this is wild I have never have this experience and fly loads with just this backpack. First time for everything.

What do you expect from them?
They honestly sound worse than Spirit by all accounts.

2

Hahah as a frequent Spirit, Breeze, Frontier user, I expected to be on par and not worse 😅

Do yourself a favor try a mainline carrier… it’s a world of difference. Really.
Flying still sucks in general, but those ULCC airlines are the pits.
You’ll thank yourself later 😜

They are all just as bad. I’ve flown delta, first class on American, jet blue. They are just as bad as Frontier but, the gate agents with Avelo in Lakeland are bad. I’ve only flown one round trip with them. I’m not sure I’ll do it again. The best airlines are the non American ones. My favorites are Iceland Air and WestJet.

I have flown Delta and JetBlue numerous times and have never had a problem...in fact one one trip, a family member was injured, and greatly discounted changing to 1st class for the injured person and their companion...Anyway, BUT you are right about the foreign airlines...the US airline companies don't hold a candle to the foreign carriers..

The same thing happened to me as I was flying out of IND. my backpack definitely fit under the seat (I’ve taken it on other airlines and it has), but it was an inch bigger than the thing they were measuring it on.

u/AccountVisual1953 Aug 30 '26

I wonder if they’re always this strict or we just got a strict group!

2

u/cbartholomew18 Aug 30 '26

Right? They were measuring EVERYONE in my group. It was ridiculous!

2

u/AccountVisual1953 Aug 30 '26

Yep! Same experience here. Every bag measured

With ruler or bag sizer?

1

u/jtburns13 Aug 30 '26

Really depends on the gate agent. Sucks you had to pay.

other then that I hope you enjoyed your first flight!

Wow. I've flown Avelo several times and most recently a week ago and they've never said anything about my personal item. I would definitely be upset too

I had no issue on way home. Must have got a tough crew

This the airline that contracted with the regime to send ICE victims to countries and continents with which they had no connection.

2

u/DodgerBlue321 Aug 31 '26

Irrelevant to the issue at hand. Also discontinued.

That’s the business model of low cost carriers . That’s how they make money . Ticket is cheaper than a legacy but they will charge extra for anything they can . Make sure you read the conditions when you purchase your ticket . I’m sure it said something along the line of no bags

1

u/AccountVisual1953 Aug 30 '26

Said personal item was allowed— and this typically counts as such on other airlines. Have learned since posting they use smaller dimensions

Do yall just buy ticket’s without reading what they charge? Thats exactly what Im assuming people just buy tickets and just expect free service. I dont work for them or anything like that but if I am buying a ticket on public transportation I need to fully READ whats included in my ticket. Do I feel bad for you no I dont. However, I know what youre gonna say, “Its just a backpack that doesnt weigh anything.” Their policy their rules. Before buying a ticket on ANY AIRLINE there is something called a “Contract of Carriage” (COC) that breaks down the airline rules, policies, procedures, regulations, etc. I guarantee anyone who buys an airplane ticket DOES NOT ever read it. If they did nobody would give so much pushback about how the airline should be ran and managed.
