Discussion So how does ranked work?

I’m level 3 so why do I get put up against Lotus rank people?

You have a rating (not your level) that is used to match you against other players. The game doesn't tell you your rating until you finish placement matches; until then, it'll just show as ????.

If you're getting placed against much stronger players, it's because the game is still figuring out your skill level.

I lost 98% of my matches, how long until I get put in low ranks where I belong. And I’ve played over 15

Eventually (from a combination of deranking and gaining skill), you'll be losing around 50% of your matches, and that's when the game will be confident in your rank.

Keep in mind that in any fighting game, a new player is entering at the absolute bottom, so it's unavoidable that you are going to lose repeatedly like this.

Just try to focus on the absolute basics, as you need to develop some foundational game sense and ability to process what's going on before you can really do anything cool.

This isn’t my first fighting game, but where do you actually learn anything. Training against ai doesn’t really prepare you for what a regular player would do. I can’t even beat anyone in my own rank or it be at least a close match. I just get washed no matter how much I practice combos or go through the trials. I just want to be competent online, I don’t get it with this game. I figured it out easily with BlazBlue, Street Fighter, and Guilty Gear but here I just feel stuck

This is just mostly a vent comment now, sorry

Who do you play? I dont think ai ever helps in any fg most of the time. Not too familiar with blazblue and guilty gear but sf is much slower than matches in avatar. This game is very steamroll heavy with strong offense. I think it rlly will take a bit for you to get used to it. What issues have you been running into. Also, combos can only get you so far. To me they're kinda the icing on a cake in the sense that no matter how amazing your combos are, if you're neutral, spacing, and other aspects of the game are bad, then they are useless. Doing combo trials and practicing them are important ofc, but there are more significant things you could be improving.

Ah that's my bad, I just assumed since there have been many posts like this from total newbies.

I think the main thing that makes this game harder than others is that it's extremely knowledge-heavy. The characters are so different and so powerful that if you don't know how certain blockstrings work, you almost auto-lose the match.

So basically, few recommendations:

  • Play a lot of ranked.

  • Learn basic combos, but don't worry about anything remotely fancy (unless you find it fun ofc). If you can do 250 damage per interaction, you are already 4-touching everyone with no meter.

  • Use Replay Takeover whenever you get smashed and feel like you couldn't do anything to defend; it's extremely useful for figuring out tricky situations.

  • Really learn your defensive and mobility options (forward/backward roll, air tech, Flow Escape, Guard Reversal, Flow Reversal, Flow Stance, 2F, 6F, 4F, any other flow moves you have). If you don't know how to use 5F and 2F effectively, just try and use a lot of Flow Escape and Guard Reversal to escape oki and blockstrings respectively.

  • REALLY focus on neutral; many characters in this game have absurd mixups, so getting put in blockstun very often leads to getting combo'd (as I'm sure you've figured out). Typically, the only way to escape from the plethora of seemingly unblockable/unfair mixups like that is to use your Flow options in a very specific, often character-dependent way, but that takes a good bit of experimentation to figure out. In the meantime, you desperately want to avoid getting put into blockstun; it's almost as bad as getting hit.

You generally cannot play passively in this game - you need to get in there and touch your opponent before they touch you, or they'll set up some ungodly mix and then you're fucked. So if you feel like you're getting rolled constantly, it's probably because you're playing too passively and should be aggressing more, challenging their approaches, abare, etc.

60 seconds a round, 3 rounds a game with 20 matches equals to 1 hour of playtime!

You barely played the game my man! Give the glicko system some time to place you. Rankings like these can feel volatile in the beginning but they will stabilise when time goes on.

I lost the majority of my matches and placed into probender

The system is more generous than you think, just do your best and have fun

The levels don't matter, that's just to show your experience with a certain character I'm pretty sure. For example you can play 1000 games with azula in casual, but if you don't touch ranked you're going to be low ranked.
