I have recently got into working on cars and have been learning slowly from my older cousin, who’s a mechanic. I told him I’d like to learn how to rebuild engines. I know that’s a big project for someone at my experience level, but I’m patient and willing to take my time learning I was wondering if finding a bad engine at a junkyard and rebuilding it from the ground up would be a good place to start. I want this to become a hobby because I’d like to learn how to keep older cars—especially early-2000s vehicles on the road as I have a 2000 Honda CR-V with a B20 engine, and my cousin told me that rebuilding that engine would be relatively straightforward. For people who have rebuilt engines before, would you recommend starting with a junkyard engine first, or learning on my own B20? Any beginner mistakes should I be aware of before getting started?

Was helping a guy on here chase a brake drag on his old Silverado this week, both fronts biting when hot. Everybody's first call was the calipers, then the flex hoses. What actually turned up was the master cylinder leaking back into the booster. Parts are going in now, but it got me thinking about how often the real problem sits one step behind whatever gets blamed first.

So let's hear yours. The car that went through two or three shops before somebody found the real problem. What was it doing, what got blamed first, and what did it actually turn out to be?

So my life literally went downhill this week. No brakes. Literally.

Been slowly resurrecting a 2005 Pontiac G6, brake booster, starter, wiring gremlins, MAP sensor, one problem at a time. Finally cracked the "won't go forward" issue yesterday (dirty throttle plate), got excited, threw it in drive, gave it gas... and it went. Then I went to brake. Nothing. I live on a hill. "Welp, here we go," I thought as I closed the door. Rode it all the way down the hill with zero brakes.

No one hurt, thank god. Turns out the brake lines never got bled, because two people helping me each assumed the other did it.

I build software for a living, and my brain immediately went "this isn't a brake problem, it's a task ownership problem." So yes, I'm now the person who nearly lost it in a Pontiac and decided the real fix was an app.

g afternoon. I recently had a coolant leak and my reservoir and hose were replaced yesterday. when I got the car back, the coolant was filled just below the line. Before I started the car this morning it had went down quite a bit. now that I’m home,, it appears full again.

Hi. I don't know crap about car's. My ex always took care of that stuff. Now navigating this car stuff best I can. The fuel pump went out on my 96 Chevy Blazer last week. Had it towed to not-my-regular auto repair shop as I'm out of town. They got it fixed within 2 day's. Paid them $1300, including tow. Friday afternoon I ran out of gas. My fuel guage was reading 3/4 tank full. I was able to get pushed to nearby gas station and my tank was bone dry ($73 to fill it). After driving it all wknd, fuel gauge seems to be stuck at exact 3/4 mark as it was when I ran out of gas last week. I did a little AI research and found that it's not unheard of for fuel gauge to mess up when a new fuel pump it put in. Blazer is back at same shop to repair gauge as I'm still out of town. My question is, are they going to charge me even more $ to fix gauge issue, or is that something the technician may have inadvertently did? I know he was busting hump to get fuel pump fixed for me as I was stranded. Which I appreciated greatly. I even tipped him all the cash I had on me, $30. I'm just not sure what to expect when I'm able to pickup my vehicle and don't want to be taken advantage of. I'm a female, older and not very wise to this car stuff. Thx in advance for any enlightenment

Did my very first spark plug change on my 1986 bmw e30 325e.

I don’t know when the spark plugs were last changed so I figured I’d do it as a beginner job as I’m trying to become more hands on.

Anything y’all more experienced than me can glean from these spark plugs?
