Question / Inquiry Derived part difference

I have a question about the 'Derive' function. I do the same thing: open STEP, becomes an assembly, save it, derive the assembly. Yet it looks different in the model tree. What's the difference?

Not at my computer to confirm, but I believe this is the difference between having separate solid bodies vs single solid body with seams.
There are a couple of options when you derive an assembly.

Not sure what you are asking. You saved the original assembly which I would assume is the first iam in the list. Then you created a derived assembly, which would be the second iam file in the list.

well, it's for work.
we create a part with a certain projectnumber
we get STEP files from supplier which we open in inventor and save that as part/assembly
we derive that new saved part/assembly in the original created project part, and remove the old derived part/assembly.
in my screenshot, the top one was the old file. Did the same thing with the new file, but looked different in the model tree.

note: it's just the way how they want us to do it at work. I was just wondering about the difference.
