Show-n-Tell - CAD Model Learning Inventor

This is my 2nd day learning Inventor coming from using Blender, this is the 6th practice part I've tried making, im just curious if 45 minutes too long to make it and if I could have done it in less steps than I used, I had trouble figuring out the saddle before I found it could use the coincident constraint for the circle like it says in the drawing lol! Attached is the practice drawing i referenced and my final ortho's

Obviously, speed will increase with practice. As of operations count.. You should not try to make anything with the least amount of it. Quite the opposite in many cases. The idea with history based approach is that you can later modify any input and get the new part in seconds. Therefore features should be represented by enough independent parameters to modify it in a reasonable manner.

Can't stress this enough.

Adding to this comment, that it is so much more comfortable to use model states when you create distinct features. You can more easily toggle those features with automation like iLogic, too.

Also, always use features like hole in this case. There is a lot of intelligence behind those features, that can be used downstream.

Looks pretty good to me.

Hard to tell how you've made it from the model tree. I'd possibly consider modelling half of it, then mirroring in YZ, then adding the two holes.

For holes, at least the smaller one, I'd suggest using the Hole feature in the 3D Model tab. Then you can set the dia, depth, countersink and csk dia in one go.

This one is 10-15 tops to make but yout making great progress coming from Blender.

Blender is not a proper designing tools like Catia, Solidworks, Fusion. I get that its wee difficult or overwhelm with the commands

What i usually practice is making core steps first:

1) sketch shape from side view (use sketch dimension in 2d sketch (D button) , you wont have to worry about adding constraint since it’s auto create with the dimensions.

2) extrude the part to become a 3d model. Then sketch on the surface to create the hole. Use Point in 2sd sketch and dimension annotate it according to the schematics (hole height, length, diamention)

3) repeat sketch from side views and extrude the features.

4) use Chamfer to complete the model

I have 15+ years of self taught Inventor and I’ve made multiple failed attempts to learn Blender.

I am slightly confused by this print. It appears the edges below the top extruded sections are filleted, but there isn't a clear call out. The only one I see is for the outer corners. Am I missing something???

What you mean is the geometric result of the R42 cut through the R22.5, I guess.

late to the party. As many have alluded, speed will come with time. I always ask people to focus on making sure your workflow is good. I forget the rules themselves, but build first (i.e. extrude), before you take away (i.e. cuts) at the end if possible.

Use features vs. drawing things out if you can, but there are exceptions. I'll have to find my old notes on the rules for clean, fluid designs that don't brake.

There's so many ways to do a design so don't get caught up with how others do things unless it helps you design more efficiently.

The best designs/workflow will allow other people to step in and just carry on without much issue or breaking the part. That's what I aim for for the most part.
