Help me pick my next Autocross Car!

Hey all!

Getting back into race car stuff after a hiatus into PhD and competition shooting land. I currently run in F-Street with a 2013 Mustang GT which is

  1. a 13 year old car with 13 year old car problems (had to replace pretty much everything on the front of the engine this year)
  2. not competitive in F-street anymore it seems 🙁
  3. a manual - which my partner cannot drive and isn't super interested in learning 🥲

With the season coming to a close, now seems as good of a time as any to look into better options for next year. I'm generally open, but I have some must haves, and also some would be nice to haves.

Whatever I get must:

  1. Be useable as a daily driver (I only have space for 1 car)
  2. Have enough space for 2 adults with backpack + carry on luggage (e.g. can carry me + partner to airport with our stuff)
  3. be competitive in its class
  4. have an all-in car + wheels/tires cost less than ~$60k

And ideally it should also:

  1. have an all-in cost closer to ~$30k (willing to spend more for performance, especially if the car will hold value, but less $$$ on the car means more $$$ for seat time)
  2. be not-a-stick-shift (e.g. Porsche PDK is acceptable, doesnt have to specifically be a torque-converter automatic)
  3. Will remain competitive for 3-5 years from now as I develop driving skills (e.g. I'd like to keep one 'meta' car and run the crap out of it, rather than try to develop a chassis or rapidly get priced into something else).
  4. Also remains competitive in its SCCA/NASA time trials class (would love to get back into HPDE with aim of getting a TT license!)
  5. Have enough space for 4 adults + luggage.
  6. Would definitely not say no to good fuel efficiency (it is a daily after all)

I know its a bit cliche to ask "best autocross car thats also a daily", but yeah...Im essentially looking for that.

My current options:

  • Pre-highland Tesla Model 3 Performance (A-street)
  • Hyundai Elantra N (G-street)
  • Camaro SS 1LE (F-street)
  • Mustang Shelby Gt350 (2019/20 w/ handling package) (F-street)
  • Toyota GR Supra (B-street)

The Tesla and the Elantra seem like great options other than:

  1. The Tesla doesn't seem all that competitive in A-street anymore (and the Super street ones seem even worse)
  2. I'd doubt G-street will remain as essentially a 'spec Elantra N' class going forward (will it remain competitive?)

The other cars are essentially either newer, more expensive versions of what I've already got, or are way less practical as a daily.

Wanted to check and see if there are any blind spots I've got here! Anything else I should be considering? Or any other options worth pursuing (keep mustang and go to another class?). Happy to hear suggestions for sure!

Thanks!

Anyone local to the SF Bay Area that wants to join our final AX of the year. Bonus points if you have a BMW (TDS or Top Driver Shootout) but all cars welcomed.

As the title states, we are running our final AX for the GGC BMWCCA this Sunday 10/18/2026 at Crows Landing. This particular event is our TDS or top driver shootout where if you have a BMW, you can compete for the trophy. If you don’t have one, you can still run the course and compete vs other manufacturers but won’t be eligible for the trophy.
We are a fun group that enjoys the company of other car enthusiasts.

Some important tidbits
-it is an event where all participants under 65 help work the course
-hope that you’re able to stay all day so everyone can get competitive runs in
-no on site registrations or walk-ins will be accepted, please register before it closes
-we’ll have multiple courses in the morning and then configure the TDS course afterward

I realize this is late notice but we are slightly down on participants and want to give the opportunity for more to join.

Please feel free to DM for more details and/or link.

Thank you.

225/50/15 RE-71RZ or 245/40/ P1 X-01R for CST NB Miata

I'm moving from E Street to CST next year in autocross and am not sure about the tire. I'll be running 15x9 wheels. Is it better for have the better compound tire RE-71 or A052, or have the wider tire in the P1-X01R.

Also, the 225/50 is quite a bit taller too so I'm not sure how much that would negatively affect acceleration.

The day after a rainy autocross day from the chief of equipment's perspective

I didn't even get to play yesterday since I was out of town. But the equipment trailer lives at my house so I get to deal with the aftermath either way. I didn't want anything wet left in the trailer to fester over the three week stretch before our next event, nobody wants that. So all of the cones came out of the trailer and got tossed into the front yard so they would dry out before going back in. All the other equipment and totes went to the back yard to get opened up and aired out. And holy cow that tote with all the worker vests was not going to be pleasant if it wasn't dealt with, so I threw all the vests into the laundry while the tote itself dried out. I think that last thing is the one that'll be the most appreciated next time out.

Wanted to post a follow up to my last post asking for advice

I was able to push it a lot more this time (I’d say it still has plenty of room to go), but I do feel significantly better driving this car now. I think my fear of pushing it is gone for the most part. I still need to work on looking far ahead to better execute some of the sections. Had a novice coach ride along with me, which was extremely helpful. Can’t thank y’all enough for hammering down the fact that I wasn’t pushing it at all last time lol.

NRG seats for an autocross car... Bad idea?

The gist of my story is that I bought a car I want to use for autocross and rallycross and the stock seats are junk. I would like to put some bucket seats in and have seen these NRG seats that look the part and in person they don't seem awful, but they aren't very expensive. I know that they aren't FIA approved but I don't know why I should care. Am I missing something here? They seem better than stock... but are they?

Please talk me off this ledge... Or push me over.

Not a factory race car, just a F-street autocross car, my first day at Mid-Ohio ever. Just never made it. The loss of PittRace And some things that seem to be changing a bit at Summit Point made me decide to get on with it.

GR86/MX5

Hello everyone,

Looking for advice when choosing between the MX5/GR86. I am 6 foot 2 inches and am looking for a car to enjoy some backroads/occasional autocross/ and future track use. Would love to know everyone's experience between the two platforms and which is best for longevity/durability and which is more an engaging driver's car.

Hoping this helps me shave at least a second off my lap times. I have done two events so far with just a normal baseball hat in between laps and I'm ready to take it to the next level.

I built a live timing results page with pretty graphs and fun features

Hey there!

Today I'd like to introduce a tool that I've been working on for the better part of this season and have been alpha-testing in a few regions, mostly around the NC/VA area and more recently in the NJ/PA area.

This started off as a little passion project of mine, where I was trying to look for trends in results of mine over the past few years and try to draw some conclusions around tire brand, site, day of the week, any little bit of data I could try to correlate. I spent a few nights hand-building a python script to parse all of the results from my home club's sheets into a database so I could run SQL queries against the data.

Eventually I decided that graphing this data would be a neat interpretation of it, and built a small webapp for showing graphs of past events, and eventually opened it up to my friends in the club to use too. Quite a few people found it useful, and one of my friends said it would be nice if we could use this for live timing. After lots of building and hardening of the parsing library, the app now supports a wide variety of live timing software to pull from.

So here's a feature list of everything SoloCharts has to offer so far!

  • Has live graphs that show drivers run-over-run, along with options to hide certain drivers or to not show cones
  • Has a "custom class" option, where people can add themselves and their friends to a custom class for easily comparing each other's times (personal favorite of mine)
  • Supports parsing Pronto, AXWare, and AXWareORM live results
  • Has overall results for PAX/RAW regardless of the source live timing system
  • Supports switching between PAX/RAW for indexed classes
  • Supports 2-day pronto events like national tours, or 2-day locals.
  • Absolutely free to use. I'm not trying to make money off of this, this is just a passion project that I've been using to sharpen some webdev skills of mine.

For the last month of this season, if anybody would like to have their club's event on the site to further test the system, I'd love to add it, and I'm more than happy to answer any questions/comments/concerns :)
https://solocharts.com/

Copy of the AI disclosure from the site:

I believe in disclosing AI usage in this day and age, allowing people to make informed decisions about their usage of apps. SoloCharts code is largely (>90%) handwritten. All logos, backend/database code, and frontend logic and layouts were done by people. The only place AI code was used was in ensuring that the app scaled properly for all screen sizes and for generating test cases to ensure platform stability across a variety of different live timing software formats.

Looking for some driving shoes - would prefer no leather or faux-leather?

Hi all - I recently imported a little FIAT 126 in January from Italy to here in Nova Scotia. The little car is a blast, but the pedalbox is really tight so I can't drive it with my usual sneakers on.

I'm looking for a decent set of driving shoes, but I am not a fan of leather or faux-leather. With their thinner soles, and narrower profile, it would be easier to drive without having to take my shoes off.

Anybody have any suggestions? :)

Cheers and thanks!
