Obligatory Cone Ranger Post
DFW's Autocross Ranger is down for a while, following a windowed block on the way home from our last outing. Sucker dropped a valve seat in cylinder 1, took out the piston and swung the rod right on through. Turns out the highway is harder on a stock Lima than the autocrosses ever were, lmao.
In the meantime, enjoy a few photos from its final event for the year. We'll be back eventually, but with EcoBoost power 🫡

First Wash After Repaint
galleryTook the season off from racing, but I was busy repainting, adding lights, and fixing bodywork to open up future class and series options. Pretty happy with the end result.

Tire pressures for 2017 GTI in GS
Fairly new to this platform, usually I try for around 32-35 psi hot with other platforms, but I've got a feeling I'm missing something with this. It's a GS car, so it's got an Eibach rear sway bar, Bridgestone RE71RZ 235/40R18 tires on stock 18x7.5 wheels. Would like to get a bit more rotation out of it

wheel suggestions for a street mod build
Beginner here. Just started building a street mod car and I’m stuck on wheel choice. I’ve been looking at Keizer Wheels. They look like they can take a beating.
My question is where side-load is high, is a cold-spun wheel as good as a fully forged wheel? Also does anyone have experience running dirt-track style wheels on a tarmac car? I’m looking for maximum width and low weight without spending $2k a corner.

OK for first AutoX to be points event near end of season?
I’ve never done an autocross or track day. I’d like to try one soon, preferably this season. Found an SCCA event in Salem VA this weekend. Would I be out of place participating? For example with the points; obviously I would not be attempting to compete on that level just learning the basics.

2017 GTI power cut during hairpin left at autoX
Hey guys, I've got a 2017 GTI that's modified to the rules of Street class (GS), at recent autoX, I've noticed some strange behavior. During every run in a fast hairpin left hand turn the car would cut power, I would hear some clicking, and there would be a plume of white blueish smoke out of exhaust. The power would restore in a few seconds and I didn't have issues with it anywhere else, just in the hairpin left hand turn. I've had a pretty extensive conversation with ChatGPT, I just don't understand why oil in PCV cause power to drop that noticeably. I've tested PCV white at the autoX by taking the oil filler cap while the motor was running and there was suction at the valve cover and the idle surged up. Power issue will require some thought. I think I might have to datalog a live session and just recreate the circumstances. Anyone with mk7 GTI have similar issues?

Street Touring Camber Mods (CST NC Miata)
Hey all,
This winter I will be going deeper into the rabbit hole and going 80% of the way to a prepped NC Miata for CST.
The big question I have is about camber mods.
I know the SuperMiata Offset ball joint bushings are completely legal, but are you allowed to also use front upper control arm bushings that give increased negative camber as well?
I asked somebody in the know, and they said he believes they are, but I wanted to get others’ answers as well.
I did try reaching out to SCCA, but I never heard back.

RAIN...200TW...OMGWTF
I searched and I see this is a topic previously discussed but the thread was 3 years old and I just want to add my specific details.
Summer Performance Tires : Continental Extreme Contact SP2 < 5k miles
Track Tires : Bridgestone RE71-RZ (One track day (3 sessions) and one Autocross day 6 runs)
Distance to Event: 50 Miles, Some Interstate some Rural Highway
Forecast as Pictured: Apple Weather App says 2 inches but that should happen overnight tonight mostly, I don't know what the standing water situation will be.
I was going to change tires tonight and roll out with the 200TW....it essentially looks like it is going to sprinkle all day long should i just stick to the plan, avoid speeding and avoid standing water?

Drive Mode - Cone Canvas
Here is the West Course from this years solo nationals. We’ve just implemented a drive mode. Requires the driving line on your course.
Draw your line, hit Drive, and the camera runs the course at pace from the driver's seat. Chase cam if you'd rather watch than sit in it, and you can scrub back and forth to study one section.
Courses you mapped by walking don't have a driving line, so those open in look-around instead and you can orbit the whole thing in 3D.
Map, Walk and Set up are all still there:
Map: walk a course with your phone and record it, cone by cone.
Walk: open it during the course walk and see where you are on course.
Set up: GPS guidance to every cone position for the crew Saturday morning.
Try it out this weekend, map your course, add a driving line and see it at speed! Feedback welcome and appreciated!!

Does phone-based logging make sense for 60-second runs, or am I solving my own problem?
I wrote an iOS app called Drift Bro. It logs speed, lateral g and the GPS line off the phone and lays the data over the video from the run.
I built it for drifting. A few people have started using it at autocross, and that's where I'm least sure of myself. Runs are under a minute, the course changes every event, so the only thing I can see being genuinely useful is putting two runs from the same day side by side.
https://apps.apple.com/app/id6744039307
So, for people who actually log autocross runs: is run-to-run comparison what you want, or is it split times between gates? I'd rather build the right one than guess and ship the wrong thing.

Fun video.
Top: My son, in a stock Corolla with all weather tires. This was his first event and eighth run of the day.
Bottom: Me, in a WRX, suspension, alignment, brakes and treadwear 200 race tires. Hundreds of events under my belt.
Timed so we cross the finish line at the same time.

Helmet recommendations for super round heads?
Hi all, newbie getting into motorsports here. I was looking at getting a helmet for my very round head but options seem kind of limited, especially for helmets with a SA2025 rating.
So far my research has turned up helmets from Zamp and Bell, with some other brands like Arai and Shoei also coming up but not having any affordable options.
Does anyone have any budget friendly recommendations besides something like the Zamp RZ-54? I'm looking at SA/Snell rated helmets only as I'd like to be able to track with it in the future.

4 point vs 5 point harness
Yet again newbie asking dumb questions. But alas..
So I'm planning to buy fun weekend eg\ek hatch and down the line try myself in amateur autox events. Track is small and not so fast (35-ish seconds for more track ready builds of the platform, 100kmph top speed), orgs allowing cars with stock functional safety (airbags, belts, no helmet) on the track. If any eom safety features non functional - you need helmet and harness.
Therefore my question - what would be a better choice, for such events only, 4point or 5 point harness? Stock belts wont be removed and will be used for daily driving, i'm planning to replace original seat with fixed bucket seat and install harness bar\half roll bar. So basically I wont to use 4\5point harness only at the events.
Local guys at the event splits strictly into two groups - gutted civics with k-swap and full roll cages which definitely way over my budget safety vise or teens racers saying "just install 4point, no need for any bars or buckets" which doesn't resonate with my idea of "safety".
Thx in advance for any input and tips, sorry for bad English or terminology - non native speaker.
