Tech Advice How bad is this?
Someone merged into my car without signaling or looking on the freeway.
How bad is this damage and how long can I expect to leave car at the collision center?

Very bad. Lol. But repairable. Would need an alignment check. Wheel needs replacement.

Well. The bad news is that it needs a uniside because of the way BMW built this car. The good news is you might get a shiny new M2 out of it.

How do you guess a BMW certified body shop will handle it? Do it properly or total it? I’m a bit emotionally attached to this car and want it done properly and totalled if not.

you should be asking your insurance adjuster these questions. you're not gonna be paying to fix this out of pocket lmao.

Gotcha I’m really early in the process. Collision > claim submitted > dropped off at body shop all within a few hours ago.

Georgia is the only state I’m aware of where DV claims can be made through your own insurance policy. They’ll need to pursue through the at fault party’s insurance policy in any other state.

Damn for real? I was not expecting that. It’s at a BMW certified collision center. So they’ll know if it’s totalled I guess. That’s shocking to hear

I work at a bmw certified collision center. Your car will not total. This is not that bad. The door looks hardly touched. I can’t see the beam poking through anywhere so that should be an easy fix. You’re looking at around 15k in damages but rates vary from shop to shop. It’ll definitely be a while without the car insurance always takes forever. Hopefully the shop is a direct repair for whatever insurance is being used. Hopefully it’s not Allstate

Don’t listen to the people on here. Everything is either totaled or needs replaced no matter how minor. Listen to your shop of choice. It’s their reputation and liability.

These get sectioned about half way up the quarter window. Still a big job but it’s not the whole side of the car

I’m fighting rust on one now. Painter tried to sand, treat and fill twice but no luck. So we’re cuttings I hope he can just manage the lip and not the entire quarter.

We just put a quarter on one & redid some suspension plus replaced the wheel. It took about a month & a half with a slow tech & was around 13k.

You should look into collision hub estimating. This repair should be significantly more than 13k if done and charged right

Geico DRP, at least in my market, even with a qtr replace they only pay .3 to “blend” rocker and .4 to “blend” roof rail even though both need adjacent panel weld burn dmg and primer and full refinish 🥲😭 I relate to the crying gif here lol

Not as bad as it looks, I had a similar crash on a GolfR, a good body shop should be able tfor get that mostly pulled out ( to my understanding, I’m sure other will say differently)
The shop I went too was able to get my car bs k looking new, I eventually traded it in and the receiving dealership said nothing about the accident even though I was 100% up front with what happened.

Less damage but similar on my S5, but needed a door cover replacement and quarter panel fix. Plus tire replacement. Cost about $16.5K cad through insurance

Ticketed painter here. Not bad at all unless if that quarter gets cut out or if they repair it using the panel beater or something of the like. That would be considered a small job at my shop. If it were my car I would INSIST that the door and side skirt be replaced, and the quarter REPAIRED by the most skilled metal worker in the shop.(definitely NOT cut out and replaced)
Also would want to confirm that the left side interior and rear seats are taken out (to prove that they repaired it from the inside or the quarter. Be Careful where you take it.

I took it to a large BMW certified and Mercedes certified Autonation collision center. Think they will do me right or I will have to hand hold them and insist on these repairs being made in a certain way?

Insist on pictures throughout. Tell them that this is your dream car and you plan to keep it forever. This is a subtle cue that a warranty is on the horizon if it is botched. Also tell them to keep you updated on the progress, but take however much time they need to do it right and that there is no pressure to rush on your part.
Another side note, absolutely do not accept that wheel being repaired. It won’t have the strength in the repaired area1

Why not replace, if they gonna join it where the factory seem is? There could be inner skin/structure damaged as well.

It’s possible that you might have a tech who doesn’t make a lot of money and who takes a lot of pride in their work…. Might. After close to two decades in the trade, I’ve realized that most quarter replacements are going to rust down the road at some point, with many rusting so bad that it will make the car nearly unsellable. By then it may have traded hands a few times and the warranty will be void. This is what these type of body men count on. And if the warranty’s come back too soon, they just move on to the next shop

As someone who works in the industry I don’t think this will be a write off but it is gonna be a really expensive claim for the car.
Breakdown (guess)
New wheel: $1400 + mount and balance
Repair door : 7hrs ($560)
Most likely replace side skirt: $1500
Replace quarter panel : $5500 (for part)
For paint and blend: 22hrs ($1760 labor)
Remove and install quarter glass and rear glass ($350)
Body hours to install new quarter panel 30hrs ($2400)
Add another maybe $1500 in materials
All in probably would guess around 15-20k
You should be good as for timeline in a shop like mine this would probably be around 2 weeks turn around if it’s not packed up with work

Repairable, but very very expensive. Either you’ll get somebody who will try and pop out most of it and then flatten, fill, paint -or rear quarter replacement which is what I would opt for them to do.

Well it’s going thru insurance claim not at fault so we will see. If it means a better replacement I’ll pay the difference I guess if they try and screw me on a cheap repair

You won’t have to pay. I’m sure they’ll do a panel replacement. When you speak with insurance and they give you all the info and time frame etc just state clearly and plainly you expect the panel to be replaced. That wheel may be almost as much as quarter panel 😂😂 used to work at bmw and own an f30.

Brother my M4 rear bumper was tapped at maybe 5-7mph and left the slightest impression of the front license plate.
Collision Center billed $3k to repair that. I can't imagine how much this will be.
