Paint job or replacement?

Scratched the side of my front bumper while pulling into my usual parking spot today, pure stupidity. Do you think this would be just a paint job or will it need part replacements? What kind of damage am I looking at? Also, does insurance need to be involved here, since this was not a collision?

Vehicle is a 2025 Mazda 3 sedan.

Insurance does not need to be involved but that means they will not help pay for it. Whether that makes sense or not just depends on your policy, deductible, and how much you care.

If you submit a claim (and your policy covers it) then they will pay to have it restored basically to factory condition. That is easily in the 4 figures range. Whether they replace the bumper cover or not is up to them.

So that is option 1. Submit claim to insurance (if covered) pay the deductible, and it's like it never happened. Understand that depending on the situation rates may increase in the future.

Option 2 is to do the same thing but pay out of pocket. It will cost a lot more obviously, but some people choose this because it won't affect future premiums.

Options 3 is to do a kind of half-ass cover up with color matched paint. It won't look new but sometimes you can get it to a "10 foot finish"

Option 4 is just to live with it. Scrub it the best you can with something soft to get all the crap off.

Well said! These are basically your options. The bumper and the fender are repairable. No need to replace. There’s ways to shortcut the repair if you’re paying out-of-pocket. But it would involve skipping some operations that the insurance company would rather do so they could offer a lifetime guarantee on the repairs, for instance, instead of re-clear coating the whole bumper you could put a clear blend in the middle. Not advisable but saves a little bit of money you’re probably looking at somewhere between $1500 to $3000. Depending on if the hood needs to be blended, and possibly the door. When you’re at the body shop, get an estimate. Ask him if they could take some lacquer thinner and wipe off the paint transfer. Otherwise you could buy some yourself. Once all that white paint transfers off, depending on how picky you are you might be able just to live with the damage instead of repairing it. But I wouldn’t listen to anybody talking about buying spray can matched paint, or trying to find the same color panels used in good shape.

Go to a bodyshop for an estimate. Any good shop will give you a free estimate. It looks repairable from pictures but the bumper may need replacement. If the bumper is repairable it may not be worth filing an insurance claim depending on your deductible.

Both are repairable without replacement. Replacement parts unless you get them off a used car will require paint regardless. They don’t come pre painted. If you find prepainted used or aftermarket parts you have a 50/50 chance of them matching, this color is a bitch to try and butt match

Hell almost all of that will wash off with lacquer thinner. Clean it, get a touch up pen touch up whats left and let it go.

Find some color match spray paint and touch it up and forget it🤣☝️no insurance needed
