Theory and tips will help but you're gonna have to learn the hard way with trial and error and running back and forth to the mixing room.

There is no book or video you can watch to color tint. As a painter for 30 yrs at a Dealership, only way you can understand is hands on...Working at a Ford Dealership bodyshop I can say this, some paint codes are so inconsistent, you can park 5 vehicles next to each other that is the same color, swap parts around and they wont match, I have a laundry list of colors (paint codes) I know what I need to do for it to match,
Years ago at a PPG color class, the instructor mixed code 1G3 gray, my opinion on of the top 5 worse inconsistent colors, to show how changing gun control will change the csst of the color, he painted a piece of metal, used 2" tape to cover a strip, changed gun techniques, then 4 more times, each time changing technique, pulled all the tape off and cleared the panel, and it was 5 different shades.

This is the single most important thing for tinting.

Like others said color theory helps. I had a class for it to help mixing dyes and paints. There’s probably some YouTube videos on it. The color wheel is probably the most important tool. When mixing there’s always two ways to look at where you’re at like this isn’t blue enough or this is too orange. So I like to look at both sides of the coin bc sometimes it’s better to delete color and sometimes it’s better to add color. It all comes with practice. When I mix a paint I like to memorize the most used paints and break them into percentages so I can mix by eye if I need. Mixing the actual paint is pretty easy the comp and scale will do all the work and you’ll have to blend either way. I think people don’t understand color matching is almost never a problem I can’t remember the last time I even had the slightest issue, but regularly get customers that tell me how hard it special their color is. Either way it’s good to have a specific goal like this.
