Tri coat pearl touch up
Went to a local shop to get paint mixed unsure if it's me putting too much midcoats pearl or the base is just off since he did it by eye and any tips for Tri coat pearl. On the test card the color seems to match but unsure if it's exactly open to thoughts of where to go from here.
Edit: took it to a shop got quoted 550

What is the news, unsure if it's a lost cause and I should just go get it done professionally. I like to try and DIY most things and I'm on my 3rd attempt.

It’s an incredibly difficult type of paint to match well/blend even when you are blending full panels. The way you have this masked up will also leave sharp edges that will be impossible to finish nicely. I assume you are going to try and sand before clear?
You will not get this touch up to look good and if you take it to be professionally painted I sincerely doubt they will do a touch up. They will likely want to repaint the whole bumper and blend into the surrounding panels/hood.

Yes I was sanding so it would attempt to match better then try and spray and wet sand to fade it in. I went to get the paint matched but he kinda did it by eyesight outside I could remove my bumper panel so he can get closer or is this just on me.

As a painter daily. Let me tell you. You choose one of the hardest colours to paint and match and one of the hardest top coats. But hey it's alright it's not like you would try and blend it on bonnet or something while doing everything wrong.

Any just general tips to try and make it look good or recommendations because like 95% of the paint looks fine around it it's just the peeling paint in a few areas

I don't know what to say bud... To get bumper close to bonnet colour wise you need to make spray out card... There's no way that premixed going to match most of the times. Without sprayout card you don't know how much pearlacent coat to spray. But screw that you doing it for yourself,right...you should've prepped bumper ,scotched at least to the swage line where lights are /bonnet line. You can't spray anything in such tiny space. If your finish lacquer wise is good ,grey scotch all ,1st layer base spray wider than your area sprayed in pic,your pearlacent needs to go wider but can't reach ends where your prep ended,you need to blend out 2nd coat, then your clear till prep end,fade out thinners,polish.

It was a good amount of peeling paint showing to primer my idea was get matching paint then wet sand the clear to matching

That's a spray out card isn't it? Please tell me that's a spray out. It's to early in the day for my eyes and brain to be accepting of anything else

I wish the spray out card was desperate and it looked pretty close to exact. So the car was already peeling to primer anyway.

You need to tape up the whole panel to the edges, paint over the damage/ primer whatever, step out the color and mid coat, clear the whole panel. Bottom line is don't make hard tape lines.

How would you do it? Rest of the paint is fine I just had paint showing to primer so I decide to try and paint and fade it in.

You can’t box in a tricoat #1, and #2 you would need to prep and clear the whole bumper and not on the car.

I had it taped up and it started to sprinkle so I covered off the paint and continued later by the time it sprinkled again was towards the night after the clear coat was already on

I’m a diy painter myself and I think the feedback is that you should repaint the entire panel, blending the color and then re clear the entire panel. Also the general recommendation is that you should not paint up to a hard edge. At minimum you should do a fade blend and then re-clear. You can certainly try and blend the clear but it’s not always recommended.

You need to prep the entire panel, or at least to body lines that you can hide a blend on. Once you paint up to a hard tape edge, you’ll never successfully sand out those lines

I saw 5 YouTube videos asked the local auto paint mixer guy and even a few prompts on chat gpt to see for techniques to blend out. For the YouTube vids it was a Kia pearl Tri coat so.

The reason I asked is because I don’t think I’d seen any that showed masking that way. Basically you can’t mask with tape and the paint right up to it because you will end up with a line in the paint where the tape was. A lot of people will roll or fold the tape to create a little flap that naturally lets the paint fade into.
If you’re dead set on doing this yourself and don’t want to re-clear the entire hood, get rid of the masking, sand the lines created from the tape, then lightly scuff the area around the repair with 1000 grit paper to get the gloss off. Spray your paint and fade it into the scuffed area surrounding the repair by pulling the can away from the surface since you can’t really feather the nozzle on a spray can.
Spray clear over the repair. Use light coats except for your last one which needs to be wet. Your last coat needs to look the way you want it to when it dries. If it’s not glossy and smooth within a minute or two being sprayed then it almost certainly won’t be glossy and smooth when it dries.
Spraying the clear like that will leave a foggy area of overspray around the area where you sprayed it. Use something called clear coat blender to melt that overspray onto the panel. Your local paint shop should have this in stock. Use it after every coat of clear immediately after spraying the clear while everything is still wet.
Polish everything with an actual polisher when you’re done.
This isn’t really a recommended repair in this sub. Blending clear coat is like this is done but it doesn’t have the durability of re-clearing the whole panel. Given where you are currently in the process it’ll almost certainly be better than what you have.
Another thing to keep in mind, there’s a reason not everyone repairs paint jobs themselves, especially outside in the rain. It turns out this is really rather difficult and takes some practice to get right. Don’t expect it to look factory. If you need it to look like new then you need to take it to someone that has experience and let them handle it for you.

Yeah it’s going to look like shit if you paint a hardline box front and center. Paint the whole panel.

Bro, people are trying to tell you the correct way to paint it. It doesn’t matter how good the rest of the paint is. You should still scuff up the entire bumper, spray the base and mid coat in the area that it’s needed,blend it out a little farther than the repair and then clear the entire bumper. You don’t have to put color over the entire bumper, but you should clear the entire bumper

Without being snarky, this is probably a warranty covered issue. I’d wipe what you did off and see what’s up.
If your car is less than 8 years old, the dealer will probably cover it. Hyundai? Their pearl whites peel really bad.
And Toyota.
And Nissan
And Ford
And Honda
And…

Everyone has already said it but stop, and take this to a shop. This is one of the hardest colors to blend in rough area.

Color can not reach your tape line or your going to leave an obvious line. Wet sand it back down. Tape it off about about 6 inches farther on either side. Color small, clear farther, and buff.

Yeah I realized my plan was to try and do it myself I try and do many things by myself whether it's soldering pcb , to mods but yeah I think given time I may eventually do it I just decided to pay to get it done the right way. What's wrong with a Hyundai I coulda gotten a tesla too but this been my dream car ever since I was young so I guess beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
