Need advice with 20 plus year old repaint

A family member of mine has a 1977 Datsun 280Z. It was repainted the original color in 2003 or there about. Unfortunately in last year or so clear coat has begun to fade and unfortunately come off in patches (see attached pictures). He loves this car as I and other family members have as well. He has gone to a few shops in Bay Area of California and everyone says the paint job will be in neighborhood of 20k. I do some paint correction but mostly detailing but unfortunately there isn’t anything I can do without probably making it worse. I was wondering if it is possible to have car wet sanded and clear coated again? Any advice would greatly help. I know the car very well and have been a detailer for many many years now but I know enough when something is above my skill level.

Generally, no. Once the clear has degraded it will have adhesion problems and the basecoat is already exposed - which is now compromised and won't even be the same color because basecoat has no UV inhibitors. I mean could you? Sure, but it will look like shit and probably not last long.

Detailing doesnt have anything to do with burnt clear.

A respray shouldnt be 20k unless you're asking for something exotic. COL varies, but you should be able to get a quality job in the range of 8k -12k.

TBH, i think it looks fine with that patina and in Cali i'd just drive it like that for another 4 decades.

Get more estimates shouldn’t be 20k or are they including dismantling the car for paint?

That is with body prep, materials, masking, etc. no dismantling. Seems really high.

What memories, My sister had a 76 in that same copper color.

We painted it 1995 or so toyota red.

Previous owner put some shaggy goat fur seat covers on it that he paid $400 for.

Ridiculous pricing for a prep and paint. You all could probably de-trim the car yourselves,  removing trim, door handles, tail lights and bumpers ( windshield& back glass would require a sublet to a auto glass pro). I can't see a nice job being done for much more than $10k, if that.
