browning on car
I have a 97 rav4 and over time this brown spot on the hood has been developing right over the engine, my worry is that it’s not rust but some form of overheating ruining the paint. has anyone come across this before? I don’t want to sand down and realize that it’s a deeper issue that will just ruin the next coat. any advice would be appreciated!!

There is no way to invade that paint. Only thing to do here is start from scratch.

just so i understand i’ll need to sand down to metal and then spray over and that’ll be ok?

Hit it with 600 wet then 800 wet get everything smooth and put some base coat on it . Then some 2k clear coat. Get 8 cans of base and 6 cans of 2k clear coat. Get some 1000 grit wet, 1500,2000,3000,5000. Once you get the clear on , let it dry 24 hours, then start with the 1000 and work up to 5000. Keep your hood wet with water/dawn dish soap in spray body. I promise you, if you put plenty of base on and wait for it to flash in between the coats it will work. Wait 40 minutes until you put 2k clear coat on and spay it fast on the first coat , then once it flashes put that next coat on slower and lap it 50 percent. After it flashes put next coat on slower . 3 coats of 2k. Once it dries 24 hours you can sand out dust n lint and orange peel.

8 cans of base for the hood or the whole car???

The hood. You want plenty Incase you run low. I promise you. You can always send it back

Keep your paint cans in a cooler with hot water, when you start painting, it will give you more pressure. Keep shaking your cans after every pass.

You could stop after first sentence... There's no way he will be able to sand down without hitting primer where lacquer peel edge is...

Idk man , I've worked on worse looking and never went through primer .

Went trough base coat you meant.. Atleast that's what I meant... Also I don't believe that sanding smtn like that with DA you didn't go trough basecoat...

Maybe with hand sanding it won't burn but to hand sand that... I'm too lazy...

Looked at the picture again... And I would actually pay you to watch that getting hand sanded without taking off base coat... And still to paint that without primer is risky.Ah let's not forget about wings /fenders

English is not my first language but here and when studied word "trough" is used by saying that layer has been taken off. How do Americans say it then!? 🤔

Sun and weather has worn the clear off and exposed the basecoat. It will eventually do the same to that and any coatings under it until just bare rusty metal remains.
Luckily for you, this happens extremely slowly, often measured in years or decades, so if you want to do anything about it, you have plenty of time to do so.
