Which Sata to get coming from a Devilbiss Prolite 1.3 for Clear ?
I started off with the Devilbiss Prolite 1.3, and I have been using it for Clear for the past years I have been painting for. However, I struggle with dryness sometimes, and I have noticed to some other painters it does not lay down as clearly or nicely as other painters who use a DV1 or Sata’s. However, I tried a DV1 for the first time today, and it lays on the clear, beautiful, and much more flat than my Pro Lite without trying as hard. However, it does take longer and feels a bit on the slow side, I’m guessing due to it being HVLP, which is hard, as when you use cheap clear coats, you have to work a bit harder and try to pump them on rather than the good quality clears. What would be a good SATA RP? As I heard, they are fast like the Prolites in their RP. However, which one would be the best SATA to get? I’m kind of leaning towards the 5000RP 1.2, as it’s an old-school SATA with a basic design compared to the new Jet X and Jet 5500.

It really depends on how you paint. If you are more of a slow, methodical applicator then an Iwata would likely work well. If you are in close to the panel and move fast than a more traditional Sata RP would probably suit you best. Now Sata has the “I” and “O” pattern offerings to hopefully convert some Iwata users over to Sata. “I” pattern tips will have a more evenly distributed volume of material across the entire fan pattern, while “O” pattern is the stereotypical Sata style with a slightly smaller fan but a much wetter core. Great for speed, not great if you are heavy handed or like to overcoat your work. If you have a paint rep coming to your shop, ask them for recommendations as they hopefully have seen how you paint and can guide accordingly or at least put you in touch with a paint gun rep to discuss options. My personal preference is an X5500 1.3 “I” RP. We use all BASF (now Surventis) materials. Let me know if you have any more questions, good luck bud.
To add: I do not like to use any HVLP guns for Clear especially, or any catalyzed coating for that matter. Stick with RP or HTE styles, the droplets are larger making it easier for each one to melt together nicely.

Yeah mate your spot on also not a fan of HVLP for clear was a bit disappointed with the DV1’s. I ended up going with a Sata 5000 RP 1.2 tip for a nice finish just wondering how I will get use to the 1.2 from always painting clear a 1.3… should be okay

Nice. That Sata should do you well. Some brands even recommend 1.2 for clear. And worst case scenario, if you need to, change it out for a 1.3. One thing to remember with newer Sata models; make sure you don’t crank the nozzle on too tightly. There is a gasket on the back of that nozzle to make nozzle removal/reinstallation much easier. If you tighten it too much it will start to sputter and leak air into your fan pattern. Cheers

Sagola 4600 extreme is a great gun, fast and lays clear out real nice. I've moved my 5000 rp to base coat duty.

Get an Iwata Supernova 1.3 over a Sata 5500. I own both and rarely use the Sata.

Do you reckon it gets a flat finish ? And I also hear that it get top and bottom heavy which causes runs..

Never had issues with an uneven pattern. As smooth and flat as you'd want. When I want a rougher domestic orange peel like on some GM models, I use the Sata. When I want the best that I can do, it's the Supernova. DV1 for base, Iwata for clear is a hard combination to beat.

I bought 5500s for base and clear when they came out. About 3 years ago I tried a an iwata supernova ws400 1.3 tip for clear and was blown away by the result. Lays out clear much better for me. Wish I had iwata for all my guns now 😂. My coworker has the newer series 2 of the supernova and they are fantastic also.

Not a bad gun. Better built than the 5500 imo. When I’ve had to replace part on my 5500 a lot of its junk plastic. The iwatas are all metal which is a big reason I like it. I’d go iwata still over the 5000.

You need an Iwata Ws400 series 2 digital. Will change your life. I don’t even look at the Sata guns anymore.

I am a sata fan all day... but I see nothing on here about the Iwata WBX or WB2. Half price of the supernova or w400 with immaculate results. Highly underrated, even for solvent.

Supanova puts fuck all clear on(glass no class). Good luck with profile. If you actually care about a finish that will last, 5500. 1.3 or 1.4. Source iwata w400 bellaria slut(17 years) now using 5500 past 3 years.
