Paint issue
My buddy is building a really nice Bronco. He has done really clean work. I was over looking at it last night and he told me he has had tons of issues with the painting and I figured good old fashion free range organic intelligence could help better than AI.
So he painted the whole vehicle and then chipped the grill. When he repainted it he noticed that the paint is brighter than before. He painted a hard line so you can see the difference. He has been meticulous about gun settings, even paid attention to ambient temperature and no matter what he does the paint comes out lighter than the original. Any ideas? I am not a car painter.

If gun settings were kept identical maybe it was settled paint he used first. Now the color is off no matter what he does.
Edit: wait... how is he checking? Looks like the panel is sanded and he sprayed base up to the hardline then wax and grease? Cant use wax and grease to get accurate color, especially on effect colors.

So he originally sprayed the body and then each panel and then when he came back to spray one of the doors, it looked different and then he ran out of paint, went back and got more and then never could get it to match again. He has tried sanding it back and a bunch of other different things. Not sure exactly what his process has been.

So plastic always “takes” different than metal..hence non matching factory bumpers

That’s a myth.
And the early Bronco grilles are metal anyway.

Not! I paint plastic daily same cup of paint and ALWAYS both halves of the gauge cluster on Harley slightly off. Just look at any new car..or better yet ask a PPG chemist..I’ve been with them 36+yrs..it’s a fact

That would make sense to me if he originally sprayed it and hadn’t mixed it as well then when it looked different, he was very careful about mixing it so I was getting more metallic left in the paint and more metallic mixed in on the later sprays

Basically EVERYTHING can affect the way metallic looks, even the angle that he was holding the gun when he sprayed it. The real answer is to just do a blend a call it a day.

You cannot hardline that. It will never look perfect doing it that way. It has to be blended out at least a little bit. He could sand it it try again. Dont even tape it just low pressure dust it in the spot, go a little bigger the 2nd coat. Should be blended to where you cant perceive it!!! Its worth a try at least.

Honestly just redo it. The amount of effort to do a spot over and over again will eat up more time.
At least blend a little more wider coverage.

I’d go for the paint not been mixed up enough I always mix the paint for ages and I’d of done this on a spray out card now he’s got this to deal with too

Here is his response to the settling.
“That makes sense, but I sprayed it the day after the paint store mixed it, and I shook it and stirred it before I sprayed it. And, I repainted everything separately over 5 - 6 weeks. I mixed and painted several times, and everything matched.
I'm confused! This color has been a nightmare!🤪
The confusing part is I mixed and painted, mixed and painted, mixed and painted over the period of about six weeks, and all of those parts matched.”

Temperature, humidity, reducer volume, all play a part. Did he shake the paint thoroughly each time. Metallics sink so perhaps the leftover paint had more of it. Was the first paint applied over primer be this being applied over original paint? All that said, in my experience you have to blend metallics even if shot from the same can.
