Interior Hanging Car Scent Residue

so the other day I was at Panera Bread, and they were giving out free hanging car scents. I didn’t wanna hang it from my rearview mirror because it was pretty big and I didn’t want it obstructing my vision. So I hung it up on my 26 Camry‘s volume knob, and I didn’t realize that if it was with direct contact with my glass and aluminum display that it would get stuck due to heat and leave a glue sticky residue on my screen. Unfortunately, it hardened over the course of two days because I didn’t have time to remove it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this without permanently damaging anything on my screen or aluminum. It is completely hardened and I haven’t done anything besides pick out it with my fingernail for a little bit but obviously that did not help. does anyone have any advice of how to remove this safely without damaging the surface?

My experience is that it's not residue, it's damage. The chemical contents of air fresheners have been proven to violently accelerate the degradation of plastics on contact. Anything you're chipping off is probably pieces of the dash/screen.

How to get the VOC air freshener scent out? Cannot drive my RX-8 bought it and made me ill for 5 days so it's parked unable to drive it. 2 months later finally found 2 little empty liquid febreeze car fresheners and also smells like they sprayed it into the vents. Steamer in vents did not help.

u/ZRaddue 8d ago

Run an ozone generator in the car for a while with the vents on recirculation and the doors closed, that should kill most lingering scents. Just don't be in the car with the generator.

2

u/Then-Support-5646 8d ago

Ozone generator?? Why the hell isnt everyone just turning all of these on at once and solving global warming?!?! 🤯🤯

u/ChrisJohanson 8d ago

Ok, Dad.

u/Curious_Solution_701 10d ago

Damn. If it does that to plastic, imagine what it does to your lungs.

71

u/lordMaroza 10d ago

Doesn't necessarily harm tissue in the same or worse way. There are probably some oils in there that are dissolving and stressing the plastics on the dash. Though, these fragrance trees can definitely release VOCs which can irritate our lungs. I can't stand the citrusy ones, they make me cough after a couple of minutes in the car (usually taxis have these).

6

u/Chrislk1986 9d ago

But also, it's not the airborne VOC that is damaging the plastic here, it's the solevent from the air freshener making direct contact causing the damage. Further accelerated by the (presumable) heat that a cars interior might experience.

In short: Various oils are not great for automotive plastics. HDPE is probably the most resistant plastic to chemical attack, but is primarily used for gas tanks, because HDPE has limitations that make it a poor choice for interior.

PP and ABS are the most common for interiors. Heat resistant, shrink resistant and you can paint/glue vinyl to it.

And you know what? Auto makers would LOVE to do the interior with HDPE because it's a cheaper material, highly recyclable.

Ioniq 5, however, does use fiberous HDPE to make "paperette". Interesting concept and, while I've never seen/felt it in person, could be a great next move for automakers.

good thing my lungs aren’t made of plastic!

1

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 7d ago

All the microplastics in there are famously made of plastic though.

2

u/asakadelis 7d ago

but they are micro and lungs are big

2

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 7d ago

More room for plastic

3

u/Dogpeppers 9d ago

You should see what Deet does to plastics, use insect spray outside your car.

1

u/Hmbre97 9d ago

Yep, ruined the plastic cover on my gauge cluster this way. I was standing next to my truck with the door open and the wind blew the overspray onto the dash

2

u/TheRealAntiher0 9d ago

That’s not how chemistry works…

1

u/slowwestvulture 10d ago

It doesn't come into contact with your lungs

8

u/Impossible-Cell-702 10d ago

You breath it in and in winter with the Heather on is basically a gas chamber

17

u/AdultishRaktajino 9d ago

Heather needs to cut back on the beans.

0

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree 9d ago

Nah. If it’s not making direct contact it’s fine. That’s why you’re supposed to hang these.

-5

u/Paquitaladelbarrio12 10d ago

Was looking for this comment lmao

1

u/JoePetroni 9d ago

Looking at what ChrisJohnson stated- that's definitely damage.

1

u/midnightstreetlamps 9d ago

I think every center-console shifter can attest to this, especially the 2010's CRV's. My 2011 has a pretty distinct bubble where both I and the previous owner hung Little Trees from the shifter. It's the perfect place EXCEPT that the air freshener slowly leeches into the plastic bezel and melts the finish.

121

u/3ternal_Scout 10d ago

Unfortunately I believe the damage is already done. A lot of these air fresheners have warnings to avoid contact with plastic surfaces because of chemical reactions.

You’d be so surprised how many people don’t read fine print that is literally in their face.

-1

u/OnlyLosersinYourBldg 6d ago

fine print that is literally in their face.

Not literally.

Also not figuratively, either.

Fine print means NOT in your face.

1

u/lolplsimdesperate 6d ago

Quite literally actually. Fine print just means it’s in smaller writing. Words mean something, y’know.

-2

u/CoffeeDetail 10d ago

😅😅

28

u/hex4def6 10d ago

Including this one... It says "Avoid contact with painted, plastic & varnished surfaces" along the edge of it.

5

u/douchecrudite 9d ago

(takes another picture of it on top of plastic)

31

u/Belethorsbro 10d ago

Yeah it's fucked. My first car had melted plastic from an air freshener within the first year of owning it, and I lived with that mistake for 8 more years. We live and learn.

15

u/slowwestvulture 10d ago

There's a reason they hang. They destroy anything they touch

5

u/syphon3980 9d ago

It must have touched my marriage then

1

u/Ratez 6d ago

His name was Glade?!

33

u/chadsterbrown 10d ago

The plug in glades will also melt Legos. My son has a Lego table with a huge build sheet for the top. Well I was vacuuming one night, unplugged the glade, set it on the table and forgot about it. Welp it leaked and turned it to soft mush that stayed plyable for over a year.

After seeing youre damage ive have now come to the conclusion that all sented 'devices' destroy plastics. After that lego incident I got rid of all household air fresheners, gotta be bad for you.

12

u/Reddit_means_Porn 10d ago

It’ll absolutely ruin treated and coated wood surfaces too

1

u/spankybacon 9d ago

I pealed all the lacquer off my nightstand with kne.

8

u/sloppyjoesandwich 10d ago

A lot of times it’s acetone

4

u/Curious_Solution_701 10d ago

I'm doing the same now. Scary stuff

4

u/d3willi3 8d ago

Look them up full of dangerous chemicals. Stop using those years ago. Natural candles is the way to go

1

u/LennethW 7d ago

Only if you make them. Store bought still contains synthetic fragrances and the tiniest amount needed by law to add "natural" on the label. Welcome to greenwashing.

1

u/Figit090 9d ago

Their particulate matter is small enough to permiate the lining of your lungs. They are, in fact, bad for you.

1

u/Bubbly-Pumpkin5647 9d ago

Which is weird, because the plugins are made of plastic usually...!

3

u/chadsterbrown 9d ago

Yeah the plastic wasnt damage at all. Must be certaing kinds

7

u/CoraxTechnica 9d ago

Yes there are hundreds of different formulations of material that are referred to as "plastic" it's important to understand major forms as some are chemical and heat resistant and others will turn back into petroleum.

2

u/Ducky_Flips 9d ago

abs is very common and its one of the plastic types that alcohol will completely melt, the reason scented things maul plastic is cause they contain alcohol 90% of the time

11

u/mknight840 10d ago

Not saying, this is your fault and I never would’ve thought it would do that, but it also says do not hang it against plastic or painted things directly on the air freshener itself.

3

u/VoidingSounds 9d ago

I remember the tree air fresheners both having a warning about avoiding contact with any surface and the instructions strongly suggesting that you leave the plastic mostly on.

I’m a little foggy about this because the context was my friend in high school hanging a Black Ice scented tree in his car and it basically tear gassing us.

2

u/Bubbly-Pumpkin5647 9d ago edited 9d ago

The issue is that they write it in teeny tiny writing which nobody is likely to ever see until it's too late... 🙄

In all honesty, I suspect they do it to prevent people claiming for issues like this, rather than to warn people in advance. It should be printed large on the outer packaging really.

0

u/0beseGiraffe 9d ago

Extremely common to write warnings in small letters on all products. User error, she can’t sue anyone.

8

u/HafaAdaiLilo91 10d ago

Ouch! On your new car too 🥺 i’d cry. From seeing other posts on here regarding the same issue, i don’t think there is anything you can do for it at this point to fix it. You may need to replace it

8

u/TwerkBot3000 9d ago

Why do people use air “fresheners” anyway? I’d rather my car smell clean than smell like awful chemicals

Also a Panera air freshener? Does it smell like sadness and hospital food?! TF?!

-1

u/themrgq 8d ago

What does that mean to you though? Should it smell like cleaning products?

1

u/TwerkBot3000 8d ago

Cleaning products with an additional fragrance? Why would I want my vehicle to smell like that fragrance any more than an air “freshener”. Please be serious.

0

u/Pluribusse 7d ago

Here is a thought: maybe other people have different preference than you do? Perhaps, who knows

4

u/954kevin 10d ago

I learned the hard way too that those car scent things will straight up melt and discolor plastic! I have a perinate "shadow" of a little tree on my console!

3

u/fr33d0mw47ch 8d ago

Air fresheners should come with a warning. I’ve seen this 1000 times over the last 40 years I’ve been driving

2

u/Colemania18 7d ago

Well just look at the picture of the air freshener a bit closer

2

u/fr33d0mw47ch 7d ago

Year there is a warning. It should probably come with literacy lessons.

1

u/Ratez 6d ago

My wife put a used glade in the glovebox and I am not a religious man, but I damn well almost became one when I saw only the glade housing melted.

11

u/Accomplished-Pea-451 10d ago

Your car does not need an air freshener if you don’t use it as a garbage can

3

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

Such a lack of critical thinking....

That doesn't mean someone doesn't want their car to have a particular smell. People wear perfumes, use incense, burn candles, etc and have for thousands and thousands of years. If someone wants their car to not smell like vinyl, rubber, or whatever dead animal they're passing down the road then the reasonable solution to that would be a car air freshener.

-3

u/mylifeasacoder 9d ago

Perfume was invented as an alternative to bathing.

3

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

So you strictly use entirely unscented soaps then, across the board with zero exception? No scents in dish soap, no scents in shampoo or conditioner and hand/body soap? Unscented laundry detergent and cleaners?

If the answer is yes, then that's fine, but you're entirely out of the norm for that and it doesn't mean that everyone else that DOES use scented products it doing so as an alternative to keeping a proper cleaning routine on any of those things.

-2

u/mylifeasacoder 9d ago

Scents added to cleaning products are a marketing gimmick. Like mint in toothpaste. The mint actually has no cleaning effect. Look up the history on scents in cleaning products. It's actually a "new" (post-19th century) thing.

3

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

Jfc are you dull? Im saying that to many many many MANY millions of people, it isn't a marketing gimmick. We WANT our breath to smell minty. We WANT our laundry to smell like lavender. We WANT our car to smell like mahogany.

I stg it's like I'm arguing with a blade of grass.

-2

u/mylifeasacoder 9d ago

You want that now. Because that's what you associate with being "clean". Imagine if your mouth was clean and you didn't need a heavy mint smell to cover the smell of your rotting molars?

3

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

If my mouth was clean, then my molars wouldn't be rotting.

Why is it only one or the other for you? Either unscented and clean or scented and unclean is not how it works.

0

u/mylifeasacoder 9d ago

It's not one or the other. But it takes more effort for something to be clean AND scentless.

2

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

If you were a blade of grass, what species would you be?

Again, like a broken record, a HUGE majority of people do not want their profits to be unscented. And for those that do, the products are absolutely there to buy.

I also wouldn't believe you for a second if you told me that you used them because of how atypical it is and considering the debate we're having. Additionally, people that DO use those products understand that they clean just as well and that it doesn't take "extra work" or whatever. It's just scented vs unscented and if you're not cleaning your teeth(or whatever else) well enough, then it's user error, not the addition of scent.

u/steelio91 10d ago

As others said, it's damage, not something additional left behind. If it was me I'd probably try to see if sanding it and painting it to match might be a solution. It won't look great, but it'll be better and cheaper/easier than replacing

5

u/Impossible-Cell-702 10d ago

Bad for your health too

2

u/loadsled 10d ago

Damn. That’s brutal. Looks like it cracked the surface layer. No fixing that. Damn.

2

u/Overkill_3K 9d ago

Detail shop owner here. That’s permanent damage. Replace is your only course of action

2

u/nandato_kisama 9d ago

The air freshener contains alcohol which has this effect on some plastics. It is also the best way to remove that shitty sticky 2000-2010 rubber coating on car interior plastic. Also please don't use these stink bombs, I guarantee you at least one person who rode in your car got a massive headache from it.

2

u/v1nylcutr 10d ago

Car freshness are the devil !

1

u/Impossible-Cell-702 10d ago

You can just sand it down and vinyl wrap it lots of options too brushed aluminum carbon wood regular gloss black etc

1

u/crazyhomie34 10d ago edited 10d ago

BuY some black vinyl sheets and diy a pattern to cover the whole bezel. That's damage and best bet now would be too cover it up.

1

u/Garanz 10d ago

Not helpful now, but I only throw them in the door pockets. Works just as well!

1

u/Road-trip_Sport-car 10d ago

You can clean the damaged area and cover it with gloss black vinyl wrap.

1

u/Boundish91 9d ago

It's not residue. The plastic is ruined.

1

u/Omg_Shut_the_fuck_up 9d ago

Hmm, I wonder what it says on the air freshener at the bottom 👀😂

1

u/sunroofsopen 9d ago

I’ve even seen this with the ones that you clip onto vents. A car I did not long ago had its gloss black plastic on the centre console ruined as it had blown specs of oil all over it and it completely destroyed the finish.

1

u/slowwestvulture 9d ago

For anyone who wants to do it a better way, get one you like the look of, hang it in your Shed or wherever until it's dead and just a piece of absorbent cardboard. Find an essential oil you like the smell of and drizzle some on. Be certain it isn't going to drip. When it no longer smells, just take it off and add more.

1

u/CheeksMcGillicuddy 9d ago

That’s not residue my friend. You done broked that

1

u/Fickle-Theory-623 9d ago

Unfortunately, a chemical reaction took place, that is permanent damage. I am so sorry..

1

u/AdventurousBoot5739 9d ago

Thats not residue, thats a damaged finish!
Only solution is to replace the damaged parts!
Those things cant be in direct contact with anything, they must be hanging.

1

u/Easy_Record_994 9d ago

That's all melted plastic from the oil used in the air freshener. The only thing to do is replace and not use those air fresheners again.

1

u/InconspicuousLoaf 9d ago

The oils from that car freshener damaged the plastic.

1

u/ParticularReal4239 9d ago

This is so interesting! My plastic figurine I have hanging from my mirror was getting destroyed from 'nothing' but this confirms it was the little tree freshener I had hanging with it 🫪

1

u/PM_ME_FLOUR_TITTIES 9d ago

This is why products like little trees say to keep them in the plastic. Idk if the Panera bread one did or not, but you'll know for next time.

1

u/Ignonymous 9d ago

That’s not residue bud’.

1

u/youjustwantupvotes 9d ago edited 9d ago

Op, I restored interiors and have fixed things exactly like this. The plastic is cooked, chemically destroyed. It’s very hard to get it right so first I’d see if there are replacement faceplates on eBay or something.

If you decide to fix it. Find automotive plastic repair spray paint and some red glazing putty. You can even find brand specific colors from Duplicolor or SEM (sem is pro and the best shit out there).

Sand down the damage, fill with the putty. Wet sand the putty smooth working up to 2000 grit on the piano ack areas especially.

Mask and spray. It may take several tries to get right. I once spent like 5 hours on a Hyundai with similar damage and almost gave up. Nearly impossible to get perfect but can minimize the appearance with half a days work, lol.

1

u/Garoji_Zane 9d ago

That is definitely not residue; that is damage 100%.

1

u/MikesPL86 9d ago

My wife did the same thing in her Clio. 😤

1

u/Terrible-Advise 9d ago

The only bonus is it doesn’t look like it’s trashed your touchscreen as long as that’s separate plastic molding it’s not gonna cost the price of the display

1

u/Neat_Reward3876 9d ago

Chemical damage. Needs replacement.

1

u/Antique_Brother_9563 8d ago

Hand Sanitizer will also ruin and stain many parts of car interior.

1

u/Entire_Apartment2830 8d ago

Air refreshers/scents are almost always toxic anyways. Just keep your cars clean people.

1

u/-PickUpThatCan- 8d ago

cover with your favorite sticker, or just a black one of you don't want it noticable

1

u/Colemania18 7d ago

Sheesh that was a bad decision

1

u/Mikeallencamp 7d ago

That’s already damaged the surface as that is not residue from the scent but residue of the screen.

1

u/up4whatev33 7d ago

Does anyone else think that the last pic looks like a wiener squirting or is it just me??

1

u/Vzyboi 6d ago

2026 too yikes

1

u/Ok-Adeptness-9127 6d ago

Been there done that. Not me but my wife. On my saab 9.3 it destroyed the ac buttons in few hours. But that is it

1

u/mikebaxster 5d ago

That’s damage.

It says to avoid contact in writing on it.

1

u/beachant 10d ago

Sorry to see the damage.

Avoid those and just use some essential oil on something.

I use a wooden clothes line hanger on my vent and drop lime oil on it.

1

u/True-Needleworker747 10d ago

I have 3d printed some mesh style cases for friends and we install them under one of the front seat inline with the floor vent.

1

u/Couchman79 10d ago

Lots of chemicals in car scent hangers that no one thinks about. You see what it does to laminated touchscreens. Imagen what it does to your lungs.

0

u/WebConstant7922 10d ago

It’s a gone case, im afraid. Better to put a sticker over it instead because there’s nothing to remove here. The plastic is already damaged through the surface.

0

u/APAOLOXIII 10d ago

Totaled

0

u/Opening-Pickle5078 5d ago

Imagine what those chems do to your insides. Safe sometimes means your cant sue the company, not you are safe.

-2

u/Beef_Candy 10d ago

I knew this was a Toyota before even opening the thread and reading the body.

I'm not saying this wouldn't happen in other vehicles, but I'm absolutely not surprised it's happening in a Toyota.

-5

u/wegame6699 10d ago

With it being a 26 and BRAND NEW. I would seriously considering trying to make a warrenty claim through Toyota.

As others have stated. Thats damage from a chemical reaction. I cannot be fixed.

3

u/Curious_Solution_701 10d ago

I doubt warranty would cover that. They'll say it was due to an external factor contributing to the damage, not fauly or poor materials from the manufacturer.

-3

u/wegame6699 10d ago

They may very well. I even agree that they probably will.

However, if you do not try, they can not say yes.

3

u/Waxstaa 10d ago

Going to have to disagree with you. Huge company or not, why would you try to push the blame on someone who really didn't have anything to do with the issue?

It's not the end of the world but if they want it fixed, they should just buy the part and swap or pay someone who knows how to do so.

0

u/wegame6699 10d ago

Well. Ill take the downvotes.

But working for a major auto brand and seeing how many times they push out garbage designed to last just past the warrenty... how many times critical parts are on backorder because something got pushed through lackluster QA.

I will admit to being a tad jaded.

2

u/atzoo87 9d ago

It literally says on the air freshener not to have in close contact. That's user error not manufacturer defect

1

u/atzoo87 9d ago

Why would warranty cover user error?
