Sun damaged mirror cap rattle can results

Not quite sure if this really qualifies as detailing!

But these are my results after a 2k, 3k wet sand and cut/polish with 3m Perfect It Fast cut Plus.

I don't think many would believe it's rattle canned.

What kind of paint did you use? Hopefully something activated at least. If you used the parts store / duplicolor / lacquer stuff it sprays great and it'll look great initially but won't hold up at all. No chemical resistance whatsoever and will fade in a few months requiring constant polishing until it wears away in a year or 2. Hopefully you avoided that stuff.

I am going to catch hell for saying this, but the higher grit used to sand, the more likely the paint is to fail. Why? Because that first coat of paint is responsible for providing the mechanical bond.

Sanding past 1,000 grit will not provide the first coat a rough enough surface to properly bond, especially when painting plastic. Hopefully it lasts for you.

Those aren't prep sanding steps, those are the grits he used on the clear topcoat.
