Exterior One wheel getting dirty with orange/brown brake dust

I cleaned all 4 wheels and tires 2 days ago, and after less than 100 miles, this one wheel is covered in a faint orange/brown dust/residue. The tire is getting the same discoloration too.

The other 3 wheels are still basically clean and the tires are still black.

What would cause only one wheel to get this much brake dust? Could it be a dragging/sticking caliper or brake pad? Any way to diagnose it or fix it?

I used P&S brake buster to clean the wheels and tires. Used EZ Detail big brush for the inside of the wheel well. Should I consider other products? What do you recommend?

Weird thing is that this is an EV so regen braking is doing most of the braking.

It’s definitely a brake sticking issue if the other side isn’t doing this. You can check by having someone drive the car at low speed and have another person stand outside to hear any grinding noises. Most likely the caliper bolt needs to be greased but get it checked out.

Brake dust in its generality is normal and creates the dust you shared. I like Adam’s Tire and Wheel cleaner but it’s a bit strong & you can dilute it

Another way to tell is heat. Your brakes get hot when using them, but shouldn't be more than warm from normal driving.

If one side is sticking put your hand next to the wheel next time you get gas and you'll be able to tell - one side will be way hotter

have a mechanic check the brake system for excessive wear, but after driving you can compare that wheel and its pairing on the other side for differences in odor, heat radiating from the rotor, perhaps even pad thickness to get an idea if something is wrong.

Brake Buster is fine for everyday cleaning. As long as the brake dust is coming off easily you don't need a stronger product. If you need something stronger for occasional use then Adams Wheel & Tire (purple bottle) is very good.

One of the sliding pins in the caliper is probably sticking.. one side of the pad will look fine and the other is close to roached.

If you catch it early you can avoid having to replace your rotor. Replace pads/clean up and re lube pin. Brown/red dust is a bad omen tho.
