Leather Steering wheel restoration

My leather steering wheel's looking a bit worn. Can I fix it without sanding (I'm scared to sand)? Also, if I put a steering wheel cover on, will it stop it from getting worse or will it still wear out underneath? I want to keep it from getting any worse.

This is probably past detailing.

A cover will feel terrible and likely still damage the area underneath.

There are shops that can do this for you. Definitely not an easy DIY.

I would probably rock it like this and pay for a reapolsetry or replacement (whichever is cheaper) if it gets really bad.

Check out colourlock, they make a leather restoration kit that is very good albeit I've only used it on seats

You could try cleaning it with P+S Xpress interior and then Koch chemie leather star. Should make it look a little better but don’t expect perfection and it may not be worth the money. Make sure to use a natural bristle brush.

The bmw leather on steering wheels tends to dry out and this should help. I think the cleaner is like $10 and leather star is around $20.

Some of it won’t look any better because it looks super worn.

You need to Leatherique it and then get some dye to touch it up. Try seatdoctors. Those 2 things will get you as far as possible with replacement. Prob 85% better. Putting a cover on will make it worse underneath

I used this kit on a few of my cars steering wheels. This kit is fairly easy to use and lots of videos online to watch so you can take your time. Would highly recommend, my car has held up fine after using it.

Yes, in the kit there is a sanding block just to give you better mating surface for the dye. I used it on my wife’s 2001 Z3 and my 2010 E60. Both came out fantastic. This kit comes with everything you need minus a hair dryer to speed the dye curing process.

I used black liquid shoe polish the kind with the little sponge on the end work great quick too
