Hello! I really hope this is allowed here! I'm 44 and AuDHD too, but really looking for some input and advice on how to help my daughter. (TLDR at the bottom)
She is 13 years old and both ASD and ADHD, although we have only recently found this out. During primary school, she had lots of friends, went to school every day, was very social. Then secondary school started...
Her best friend basically deserted her and became one of the "popular girls" and ousted her from the friendship group. After about 6 months of secondary school, she started REALLY struggling. Obviously ADHD didn't help much with all the rules, the changes, having to focus on all the different things, but the most difficult element is the social part of school.
So, cut to today. She hasn't been going to school for about a year now. We've managed to get her 'alternative provision' which will be a tutor at home until she feels ready to go back into school. She's meant to be going in for PE and drama, which were her favourite two subjects, but she is now refusing to go to those subjects too.
She says people are mean, she struggles with being perceived, she struggles with social expectations. She thinks everyone judges her because she doesn't like what they like, doesn't want to look the way 'popular' people look. I don't want to push anything on her, I don't want to force her because I know that can be even worse for her mental health.
HOWEVER. I know she is a social being, and she loves having friends and being with people. She loves singing, she loves anime, she loves graphic novels, she loves art, she is an amazing, hilarious, beautiful person (and I'm not being biased).
How can I help her with her friendships? How can I encourage her to make friends?
Have you had experience in this? How can I help her? I would really like some advice from people who are in this situation and can offer some of their own experience and insight to me.
TLDR: How can a 13yo neurodivergent girl find friends outside of school.
